One Tree Hill - Recap & Review - Searching For A Former Clarity

One Tree Hill
“Searching For A Former Clarity”

Original Air Date: March 23, 2009

Kara – Senior Staff Writer

Okay, so first up, in the real world, I have to comment on the bizarre videos that have popped up on the internet with Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton both mostly saying the CW doesn’t want them back next year. What’s the most strange to me is that this whole season seemed to have been gearing toward the big old this is the last season but it seems like the CW picked it up for another season. Where will they take the show in season seven? Will Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton be in it? Will anyone? I don’t have answers for those questions today but I’ll keep you updated. For now, I do have the details as to what went down in this week’s episode.

This week’s episode got split up into five different parts, separated with a black title screen. This week, Lucas, Julian and Dixon, the director (James Van Der Beek), set out to cast An Unkindness of Ravens. Peyton attempts to put together a crib and cope with Lucas’s busy schedule. Nathan gets a boost in his basketball career and Haley has a tough choice to make. This episode was directed by none other than One Tree Hill’s own Bethany Joy Galeotti! She did a wonderful job, if you ask me. She acts, sings, directs -- what can’t she do?

This week, Lucas and Julian struggle to find a decent director for the movie, one that actually understands the tone of the movie. One director wants to make it very gritty and when Lucas protests, the director shouts, “This is the only place I can see our climatic scene happening! This is the spot where Lucas’s rival gang kills his uncle Keith in a drive by shooting.” Lucas just simply says, “Okay. I’m done here,” and walks away. At lunch, Julian’s father tells them if they don’t pick one of the six faulty directors within the next day, he will pick one for them.

Wow, what an episode! This week, One Tree Hill comes back from their December break with a definite bang. Brooke finally gets to confront her attacker and Sam is in big trouble. As for Peyton's mystery disease they were leading us to believe was cancer? Well, mystery solved.

Lucas goes to L.A. to meet with the producer of the movie, who wants to make lots of changes, including killing Haley or having Lucas end up with Haley. Can we leave Haley out of this? For added kicks, James Van Der Beek plays the cracked out producer. Thankfully, Lucas refuses to kill off or end up with Haley. Meanwhile, Peyton is suffering from major abdominal pain and goes to see a doctor who asks if she has a family history of cancer. She spends the rest of the episode blowing up at Mia, who hasn’t been writing songs for her new album. Just when it looks like Peyton might apologize, she tells Mia that maybe this isn’t the right label for her. Ouch.

So what happens when Lucas falls asleep after talking to Peyton on the phone? Apparently, he goes back to a seemingly simpler time and place, although the same old Tree Hill problems come along for the ride. Some things never change. Nathan and Haley are still cute, no matter the time or place, Dan plays the constant villain and trouble always follows Peyton around like a stray cat.

Peyton throws a USO show featuring Haley, Mia and Angels and Airwaves, making good on her promise to Derek. Haley gets a bad case of pre-show jitters and Sam spends the night working backstage, without incident. For some reason, Julian hangs about and adds a minor dose of drama to the night. Elsewhere, Mouth is an idiot.

It's not Tree Hill unless there's trouble in an all too temporary paradise. This week, the movie producer, Julian, does a good job at screwing up Lucas and Peyton’s relationship just by being in town. Julian tells Lucas the screenplay is good, except it needs Keith's death scene. Lucas struggles to come up with a way to write it while Peyton, through many flashbacks, wrestles with how to tell Lucas she dated Julian. Turns out that when she went to see Lucas at his book signing and found him with Lindsay, she ran into Julian. The rest is classic Peyton. It's good until it's not.

So, what happens when you mix an empty boutique, one rebellious teen and Peyton’s wedding dress in progress? Nothing good. Elsewhere, Lucas is pursued by a producer who wants to turn his first book into a movie. Brooke continues to take baby steps with Owen. Itty, bitty, tiny baby steps. Mouth is on the verge of screwing everything up big time. Nathan continues with Slamball and gets slammed around. A lot.

Peyton and Lucas continue to live in their own world, actually not leaving their house at all this week. Brooke and Sam continue to clash and Jamie gets picked on for wearing his cape at school. Mouth’s absence is over for good and Owen returns. As always, Brooke, you could do a lot better.

Lucas goes on his book tour and finds out that not even Omaha is interested in The Comet. Mouth has become a big local celebrity but deeply misses Millicent. Aw. I would too. Brooke and Millicent try to figure out what’s next for dear old B. Davis and Haley has an idea. Nathan looks in to a way to play ball again but not the kind he was expecting.

For an episode that was built up to have much craziness, it was actually lacking in it. Nathan went to go see about the Big Basketball gig and got his hopes crushed. Brooke spent some time in therapy to realize she values success in personal relationships more than success in her career. Haley got a call from Dan’s hospice nurse letting her know that he only had a few hours left. Did I mention the hospice nurse is Crazy Carrie?

This week, mostly everyone is trying to adjust to life without Quentin. The team is struggling and a bunch of the main characters see him hanging around, just being Q, in the opening scene. Meanwhile, Peyton shows a mysterious man around, who she mysteriously found using her recording studio. Don’t worry. Peyton knows him. Sort of. Brooke takes Haley’s advice and goes to see the local British psychiatrist. Nathan deals with Skills dating his mom by making his mom move out. Let’s dive in!

I'd say this episode is exactly why I watch One Tree Hill but that wouldn’t be accurate. I didn't know it could be this good. Last week, we lost Quentin and in this episode, everyone grieves. I don't think you have to have ever watched the show to be moved by the episode. The new girl, Samantha, the narrator of this episode, hits it right on the head. She didn't know Quentin but she sees how loved he was.

The episode starts out with a gorgeous opening sequence, complete with a Lucas voiceover describing how when he was a kid, jumping on the bed was like flying, like anything was possible. We see Jamie jumping on his bed and then Lucas and Peyton doing the same in their motel room. Peyton goes to see Brooke, to say goodbye since she’s apparently moving in with Lucas as soon as possible. I bet most of her stuff has been packed for years.

We start off with Lucas’s vision of a one year anniversary with each of the three ladies in question. After a not so veiled conversation with a man in the airport about having three queens and trying to find the queen of hearts, Lucas’s chosen one shows up. So, did he pick Lindsay? No because Michaela McManus has jumped onto the good old SVU ship and I wish her well. Brooke? Nope. That wouldn’t make any sense and she deserves better. That leaves Peyton, who runs to him like she’s been waiting by the phone for this call for eight years, which she has. Is anyone really surprised?
