So what happens when Lucas falls asleep after talking to Peyton on the phone? Apparently, he goes back to a seemingly simpler time and place, although the same old Tree Hill problems come along for the ride. Some things never change. Nathan and Haley are still cute, no matter the time or place, Dan plays the constant villain and trouble always follows Peyton around like a stray cat.

So what happens when Lucas falls asleep after talking to Peyton on the phone? Apparently, he goes back to a seemingly simpler time and place, although the same old Tree Hill problems come along for the ride. Some things never change. Nathan and Haley are still cute, no matter the time or place, Dan plays the constant villain and trouble always follows Peyton around like a stray cat.
Lucas has been the proprietor of Karen's Cafe, a swanky nightclub in Tree Hill City, ever since his mother left town following Keith's "accident." Haley is his featured singer, Skills accompanies on piano and Nathan is the handsome, yet slightly shy bartender who's got a big crush on Miss Haley James. Meanwhile, Brooke's got money problems and oddly throws herself at Lucas, a choice I don't think she would have made. Mouth is the town's gossip writer who gets a little too much insider information after a few drinks and an overheard conversation between Dan and his associate, Julian. Peyton is in the care of Dan, who loved her mother and promised her on her deathbed that he would take care of Peyton.
Nathan and Haley flirt around a bit before sharing a nice evening of dancing and sweet talk. Nathan's to be shipped off to war in a day and when he tells her that, she's nervous this doesn't mean as much to him as it means to her. He assures her this is his perfect night and he wouldn't want to be with anyone else. They spend the night together and end up in bed, discussing plans for the future while a sweet tune that ends with "I wanna be Mrs. S-c-o-t-t" plays in the background. A marriage certificate rests on their bedside table. The background songs, a few of which were sung by Bethany, make the scenes perfect. Haley's song about Karen's Cafe was fun and a great showcase for her voice. A lot of this episode was shaky but the music aspect of it was not.
Peyton has her eyes set on Lucas, something Dan disapproves of, to put it mildly. Dan's still got his feathers ruffled from Lucas stealing his girl, Haley, who used to sing in his club. Bizarre, much? Dan drives Peyton home but she goes right on back to Karen's Cafe. A suspicious Lucas eventually walks her home over the iconic Tree Hill bridge lit up by strings of gorgeous little lights. They share a secret kiss, witnessed by a spurned Brooke. Mouth witnesses something of his own and learns that Dan killed Keith. Gasp! He's caught and gets fitted for a pair of cement boots by Dan and Julian. Peyton tries to stop them but is unsuccessful. She's halfway to Lucas by the time Mouth has already been tossed in the water. Not too useful. Poor Mouth.
And so, Lucas, Dan, Peyton, Julian and Brooke have a big showdown in the street, while Mouth is certainly dead in the river and no one seems too concerned. Dan smacks Brooke across the face, having previously smacked Peyton and threatened Haley. He gets around in the 40s. In the scuffle, Lucas shoots Julian with little thought. Peyton also gets shot and the rain begins to pour as everyone looks around stunned. Lucas holds her and hears a cell phone ring. Oh, he was sleeping (nah, you think?) and Peyton's calling. All is well until Peyton inexplicably clutches her stomach and falls to her knees. My money's on appendicitis.
I wish the episode had just been Haley and Nathan's love story because that translated really well to the time and the tone. The Peyton/Lucas/Brooke and Dan mess just seemed like the same old story, that clunked awkwardly through every scene. The episode was written by Chad Michael Murray and I get the impression that he's been working on it for awhile just because it had nothing to do with the current storyline. I think he nailed the Nathan and Haley scenes but everything else seemed a bit off, at best.
