The Big Bang Theory - Recap & Review - The Vegas Renormalization

It was inevitable. Despite their shared Judaism and love for the Large Hadron Collider, Leslie Winkle has decided to dump Howard.

Of course, they weren't actually going out, they were only “friends with benefits” – a situation Sheldon doesn't quite understand. The boys operationally define it for him as maintaining a friendship with someone you have sex with while having the freedom to date, though he still can't grasp the idea.

There was a hot girl in the comic shop this week – and it was Penny! Our previously superficial heroine ends up showing how far her penchant for geeky boys has progressed when she makes a date with the owner of the store. Or maybe it’s just because it was the boys’ self-proclaimed “Anything-Can-Happen Thursday”.

Move over, Penny! There's a new queen bee in the building and she's making the boys her drones! It's a TRAP! (Imagine Sheldon squawking that with a giant squid head...)

Score! CBS has ordered two more seasons of Big Bang Theory! I feel a need for something sparkly... and so does Penny, who’s started a small business making glittery flower barrettes. The guys? Well, they’re just having way too much fun with disinfectant spray and laser beams (I’ll explain in a minute), but soon get roped in by Sheldon’s marketing expertise. Sounds... intriguing, to say the least.

The latest episode of Big Bang Theory had a guest appearance that was sure to draw in tons of drooling fanboys. That's right, Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist George Smoot. Oh, and Summer Glau was there too.

Sex, lies, and paintball - all the ingredients for another excellent episode. How I've missed my Sheldon fix after weeks of repeats!

Let's start with the paintball. The boys are playing against various other nerdy departments from the University when Howard gets chosen to stay behind and watch the others' backs as they plow into enemy fire. As he's waiting, Leslie Winkle does a dramatic tuck-and-roll into the safe haven (sorry, I don't know paintball) and for some random reason, decides to seize the invigoration of paintball war by making out with Howard. Oh, she also killed her entire squad. Oh Leslie, thou art a heartless... er, anyway...

Raj singing “Under the Bridge” while he does a dance akin to the Running Man is the best opening ever. Of course, as soon as Penny comes in, it's all over, and instead the focus is on the very unpleasant phone conversation Leonard is having. Turns out Mama Hofstadter is coming for a visit.

Another day, another crucial scientific problem for the geeky gang of four: they cannot find a Sheldon-approved restaurant within appropriate travelling distance of a Sheldon-approved movie theater. Solution? Leave Sheldon home. Thankfully, the logically minded Sheldon agrees that this is the only conclusion. (Though I still think that Slurpees are the same thing as Icees – who's with me?)

The boys are sitting in the cafeteria debating Superman's dry-cleaning habits when David Underhill, a (subjectively) more attractive award-winning physicist enters and asks to work with Leonard on a project. Leonard's sarcastic “big whoop” quickly turns to delight, and he gets some funny looks from the rest of the group, and even more disapproval when he nonchalantly skips Wii Bowling night.

Maybe Howard and Leonard should've settled their argument about a girl with a game of rock-paper-scissors-lizard Spock. Instead Leonard sneaks behind Howard's back to date Stephanie, a doctor Howard picked up while wearing an eye patch, and a cold war begins. But thankfully, it doesn't last long.

As someone who also does not drive, I sympathize with Sheldon's desperate search for someone to take him to Pottery Barn to return his over-stimulating Star Wars sheets in this episode. His more pressing problem, though, is getting to work while Leonard is working nights on electrons.

Lesson: If you want to keep your friends, do not discover a celestial body. When Raj discovers 2008 NQ(17) - I think - he is chosen as one of People Magazine's 30 Under 30 to Watch. However, instead of thanking Howard for the mounting bracket that enabled the telescope he used to see, or being at all humble, he becomes a full-blown egomaniac within hours.

Penny is having a bad day. She jammed her car key in her apartment door, got rejected at an audition, her groceries are all over the floor, she's sexually frustrated, and she swallowed a fly. Sheldon invites her in, begrudgingly, to wait for the locksmith while he returns to his MMORPG, Age of Conan. At first, Sheldon is quite encouraging of Penny's curiosity in the game and helps her get into it and level up. Unfortunately, since Penny's been crapped on lately and has nothing else to get excited about, she gets way - WAY - too into the game.

This episode marks the return of Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert), now a regular character. We get to see more of her rivalry with Sheldon, and really, aside from their disagreement about what matter is made of, they're two of the most socially blunt people ever. Leonard and Penny are still circling each other, this time using other people to stir up jealousy, which is where Leslie comes in.
