Really, Kevin Tighe should know better than to point a gun at Timothy Hutton. But it’s pretty fitting, considering the reverse happened last week – and now it’s at least three days later, with Team Leverage in pieces.

Here it is: the first part of the end of the first season of the best new show of the summer. Rogers, Downey, Devlin & Co. swing for the fences in this episode, which involves the team trying to rip off Nate’s former boss – and running smack into his ex-wife. In other words, this is the episode this whole show has been built on.

I’ve never been all that averse to jury duty. Maybe it’s because I wanted to be a trial lawyer. This episode reminds me more than a little of John Grisham’s novel – and the later John Cusack movie – Runaway Jury. But Team Leverage is a lot more charismatic than Rachel Weisz, let me tell you.

An important rule, kids: don’t eat and drive, unlike the bozo in the opening minute here. He deserves to be hit by a car, then he gets to work and finds out the government is raiding his office, so he runs off like a wuss.

This week, the Leverage team takes on the case of a military veteran driven out of his home by a shady contractor. It’s going to get personal, because the guy mentions his son, Nate has an immediate flashback to his son’s death, and then proceeds to go and get wasted. He even turns up at the briefing with a hangover looking like the white Ray Charles, which does nothing but further irritate Sophie.

Nothing good ever happens on airplanes. I mean, has anyone seen Air Force One, Ground Control, Nowhere to Land, NTSB: The Crash of Flight 323…okay, maybe that’s just me. But when the Leverage team (most of them anyway) get stuck on a doomed airplane, chaos ensues. I’m glad my last flight wasn’t like this.

Apparently, Kevin’s dad is also the head of the Mafia. Yep, that’s Dan Lauria of The Wonder Years fame guesting in this episode as a Mafia heavy who set an innocent restauranteur up for a murder he committed in the place. The restaurant owner’s wife – who just happens to be an old friend of Sophie’s, so I guess you could call this “the Sophie backstory episode” – wants the title to the restaurant back so at least her husband has something to look forward to. Nate whinges a lot about the Mafia, but relents and the Leverage team has its next case.

When everything else is lapsing into reruns or specials, TNT has given me the utter coolness of Timothy Hutton saving the world, one bad guy at a time. How cool is that?
