Sometimes an obvious joke can have its advantages. You see it coming, there’s no real surprise, but like figuring out a mystery, yelling “I knew it!” is satisfying enough. Case in point in the week’s episode, as Mike decides to make his bar trendy by painting everything black. Even before the power failure, it’s a good bit.

It’s not a stretch to imagine that the scars from the World Trade Center attacks still haunt the firefighters of New York. So it shouldn’t be any less true for the characters on Rescue Me. The episode also proves that there’s more to this show than just Denis Leary. Oh yeah…and it proves the French are still easy targets, too.

Leave it to FX, and Rescue Me in particular, to go the extra mile. While other shows open their season with a bang, Rescue Me opens with a fireworks show.

After a disappointing fourth season, the comedy/drama about the FDNY got the green light for an extended season of 22 episodes. Last season was salvaged by the gracious end to the Gavin family AA meetings and the tragic finale that said goodbye to Tommy’s dad (Charles Durning). From the looks of things in this episode, expect a major rebound.

Where Did We Last Leave Rescue Me?

Rescue Me is another great example of the FX Network’s sense of balance. Damages is set among the skyscrapers of New York; Rescue Me covers the city streets and blue-collar firehouses. Nip/Tuck shows people trying to be beautiful; Rescue Me doesn’t seem to mind the fat, goofy and out of shape. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia deals with crude, politically incorrect morons; On Rescue Me…well…ok, but at least they try to be a little better.

In the show’s opening scenes in 2004, Leary’s celebrated NYC firefighter Tommy Gavin makes it cleat to a group of new recruits that he’s not a hero. He celebrates his fallen brothers, including his cousin, Jimmy Keefe, who lost their lives at Ground Zero. In the next scene, we find him literally haunted by Jimmy, as well as an ever-increasing group of people he was not able to save. Tommy continues to battle his alcoholism as he bounces between the women in his life.
