It’s not a stretch to imagine that the scars from the World Trade Center attacks still haunt the firefighters of New York. So it shouldn’t be any less true for the characters on Rescue Me. The episode also proves that there’s more to this show than just Denis Leary. Oh yeah…and it proves the French are still easy targets, too.

A nice Leary moment, though, is Tommy’s parting shots at the crew as he heads for his Section 8 hearing. He lays into all of them, from Garrity and Mike’s lack of intellect to Kenny’s drinking and Franco’s womanizing. Without knowing about Shawn’s relationship with his daughter, that shot is a little more arbitrary, but no less funny. Turns out, though, that the shrink has an axe to grind with Feinberg, so he sends Tommy back to the chief’s command, crazy or not.

The beautiful and provocative Genevieve arrives to gather material from Tommy’s crew, Franco spouts conspiracy theories about a right-wing cadre needing a “New Pearl Harbor” to galvanize their plans; Tommy advises that her book should be as large as Ground Zero, with an all black cover. After having dinner with her, Kenny bares both his soul and his upper lip. Very nice performance here from Kenny, who has had his share over the run, both as Leary’s foil and during some emotional lows.

Business as usual from Mike, Garrity and Franco, as Mike closes the deal on his new bar. After arguing about the name and the décor, Mike decides on a lumberjack theme. Only Tommy seems to grasp the gay metaphors thrown out by the others. As the episode ends, Mike realizes the idea wasn’t original…He’d been in a similar bar in the city.

The only weak point in the episode comes from Sheila, who is still fighting empty nest syndrome. She joins the Big Sister program as Tommy is forced into being an AA sponsor. While Tommy’s new charge calls him every five minutes, Sheila seems to be hitting it off with her girl, until Sheila accuses her of stealing her IPhone. When the mother defends her daughter, Sheila’s phone rings and the mother discovers the phone in the cushions of Sheila’s couch. Still, not enough to sink a fine episode.

So there’s my two cents. What did you think? Drop in your comments or send me a note at: tom@thetwocents.com .
