Boston Legal - Recap & Review - "Made in China/Last Call"

I take a deep breath of hot sultry night air that feels like warm pea soup in my lungs and wish that I too could find love and friendship in the crisp cool air of Denny’s beloved Nimmo Bay (even with the crappy fill in backdrop). Unfortunately I do not live in Boston Legal land where good always prevails; everyone is impeccably dressed and either the girl gets the guy or the guy gets the guy; and the Supreme Court gets told to stuff itself six ways from Sunday.

If you add up the ages of the cast of Boston Legal it comes to over a thousand years of experience.

It is quite disturbing that Betty White looks exactly like she did on the Golden Girls. It may be because my country is just beginning to wonder what this TiVo thing is, but lack of programming meant it was on every weekday night – and for everyone born after 1980 this is like 150 years ago; back when TV was young, but the Golden Girls weren’t...

There is an old saying about death: not with a bang, but with a whimper. There is no whimpering about the death of Boston Legal. This show is practically clawing its way out of the grave and hanging onto your trouser leg like Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Producer David E. is not making this recap gig easy. Even David E. got Denny to admit it. This week’s topic is abortion and abortion is ‘not’ fun. This is a topic I am afraid to even think about thinking about after I had to review a film called Vera Drake which is all about a lady who ‘helps young girls out’ and nearly got clobbered at a media do simply by mentioning I’d seen it. It wasn’t pretty. I had to go hide behind a gaggle of weather girls. It’s a very delicate topic and please beware these ideas are David E’s not mine. But BL fans are brave and courageous and we will go there. The Fox guy would say VIEWER DISCRETION IS ADVISED, but Alan Shore is a bit more witty: ‘try to think of it as a challenge’.

After I watched this show I bashed my hand against my breast and declared I was proud to be an American. This just gave me a really bad case of the hiccups and I looked silly. I remembered I was not an American. But I’m still very proud of America and of this week’s Boston Legal – I raise my glass to producer David E.’s brass balls.

I’m a half an hour away from watching the episode, but like most TV critics, not seeing the show is no impediment to judging it, so I’m predicting Alan and Denny are riding around what looks suspiciously like Bill Shatner’s ranch providing comic relief while a more serious issue is tackled at Crane, Poole and Schmidt – and there will be sheep.

We open with Carl Sack, Shirley and Alan all peering intently at Denny’s eyeball. Denny’s convinced he’s dying of Salmonella so he’s done what any intelligent person does – he’s gone to Shirley, who obviously had to call in Carl for a consult. Alan is just there as a concerned loved one.

Never has 42 minutes and 25 seconds gone by so fast than with this intimate clever and devastating episode of Boston Legal. Clock those writers on the head with an Emmy.

Sleepover night

I’m not too sure if this makes Alan Shore cute or weird, but in his new apartment he has two chairs exactly like the ones on the Crane, Poole and Schmidt balcony and two beds: one for him and one for Denny, Denny’s Denny Crane talking teddy bear...

‘Gun, knee, right foot, left foot – only in America - sweet land of liberty Valance.’

You guessed it: Denny Crane.

Here’s a word of advice: never try to mug Denny Crane if you value your knee caps. Although Denny does seem to be mellowing in his older age – he has consented to have a drink with Weird Jerry to discuss his partnership potential; he draws the line at being mugged and killed by a black guy, especially when Barack is running for president. It’s just not a good look, complains Denny. Think of the Democrats! So he just has to shoot the guy… a few times – as one does.

Original Air Date: Sept 29, 2008

It’s the return of the filly rustling disgusting talking Texan Hoot Boy! I’m sure the man is lovely in real life, but there are not enough words to describe this character: disgusting, degrading, person who should be dead, don’t cover it. He’s just the man you’d thing would be perfect to cope with the sensitive case of underage rape in a private prison. Oh boy! This episode is going to one heck of a hoot, or… more a game of ‘pick a box’ according to Hoot Boy because if they don’t take his offer he’s going to take their little filly out and give her a good old run.

Oddly enough the father of raped girl doesn’t think consigning her fate to ‘Pick A Deal’ is very sensitive. Jerry and Katie are also not into Hoot Boy’s world view so they aren’t in either.
