Dead Like Me Movie Is Alive

That’s right, the long awaited movie, Dead Like Me: Life After Death, is finally coming out February 17th on DVD.

There are a few big changes to the cast. Rube is gone and a new head reaper comes to town, played by Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond from Lost). Also, Sarah Wynter, who played Laura Harris’s sister on 24, has taken on the role of Daisy Adair.

While it’s not in time for the holidays, it’ll be something to look forward to in the new year!

It’s George’s day and everyone knows it, except for Delores. George tries to get her job at Happy Time back but Delores refuses to give it to her. Through a phone call, Delores finds out her beloved cat, Murray, has taken ill and George and Delores rush to take him to a vet. George spots a boy reading a comic with a Post-it on one of the pages and suspects he’s a pet reaper there for Murray.

So what happens when Death and the Gravelings take a vacation? Three day vacation, complete with Roxy, George, Mason, Rube and Daisy taking a road trip to the beach? Yeah, not quite. There’s paperwork to be done and lots of it. It’s time to organize and catalog everyone’s final thoughts. They start in Der Waffle Haus but a technology mutiny led by George relocates the group to Happy Time in the middle of the night.

"Dead Like Me" Summer DVD Review - "Nighthawks"

To call Nighthawks a clip show is accurate but completely misleading. It’s time for the reapers to do a self-evaluation at 2am at Der Waffle Haus because as Rube explains, that’s when they’re less guarded. All of the reapers, except for George, set up for what proves to be the longest self-evaluation in history. George wanders in, unable to sleep and is offended she didn’t get invited to participate, despite Mason’s warnings to get out while she still can.

This week is the return of Roxy! With such a great cast, it’s natural that some episode won’t contain everyone but whenever Jasmine Guy is not in an episode, I think it’s very noticeable she’s not there. But in this episode, she’s very much back and is mourning the anniversary of her death. She spends part of the episode trying to act happy, giving each reaper a balloon at Der Waffle Haus but Rube knows better. Rube always knows better.

In this episode, we get to meet Ronnie Dobbs, a schizophrenic off his medication who can see gravelings. He’s also got an appointment with George but due to a clerical error, it gets postponed. A window washer falls to his death and Ronnie spots George looking at a graveling on the side of the building. Ronnie mistakenly thinks the graveling is death and begins following George around, knowing she can see them too.

In this episode, we meet Daisy Adair, who has transferred in to take Betty’s place. The problem is that she’s a terrible replacement. She’s sickeningly sweet but with intention. Daisy asks for chipped ice and when she doesn’t get it, she gets the waitress to redo the drink through her frustratingly pleasant manipulative techniques. The drink ends up in Mason’s lap but he doesn’t seem to mind too much.

We find out about another loophole this week and it’s a big one. It doesn’t involve how to save the name on the Post-It though. Also, George realizes she doesn’t have any friends and wants one. I’d make best friends with Mason but that’s just me. She does realize she has a friend in Betty, finally and we find out a whole lot more about Betty.

This week, we find out there's a death loophole. If you don't show up to your appointment, your appointment gets rescheduled. So, in case you're keeping score, if the person shows up to the appointment but a reaper prevents them from dying, their soul rots inside of them. If a reaper doesn't show up to a person's appointment, the soul is stuck in there and experiences all manner of ungodly things until a reaper pops it out. George finds out about the loophole and uses it on her next reap, to terrible consequences.

"Dead Like Me" DVD Review - "Curious George"

Dead Like Me
Curious George

DVD Season 1

Out of all the things you can learn from Dead Like Me, one of the top things is that nothing good can come out of you going within a hundred foot radius of a caged bear. Three people get taken out by either Dora the bear or as a result of being in the same vicinity as Dora. Gravelings are unpleasant business. We also learn that going home is a big mistake once you’re a reaper.

George goes home while her family is out getting their portrait taken, trying to look normal. Joy struggles with Reggie and tells her if thinking about George is painful, not to think about her. You can say Joy tries but she really doesn’t know her daughters at all and she only really tries every once in a while.

This episode takes us deeper into the world of reapers and what George’s death has done to her family, especially Reggie. Let’s start with Reggie because she’s wonderful. She’s a lot like George, keeping everything in, except for directing a few well placed snarky comments at their mother. We find out Reggie has been stealing toilet seats from everyone. She’s pretty crafty at it, telling neighbors her mother doesn’t allow her to use the bathroom. We later see Reggie in her own bathroom, kneeling in front of a Ouija board placed on top of the toilet seat. I adore Reggie.

If you’re going to end up with a nickname for your entire undead life, it probably doesn’t get much worse than Toilet Seat Girl. At the same time, if you’re going to be undead and have to hang around other undead people, you couldn’t do better than Rube, Mason, Roxie and Betty.

In this episode, we learn quite a lot. We find out all about reapers, gravelings, what happens to a soul if it’s not taken out of its body after it expires and exactly how patient Rube can be when George doesn’t do the job she’s been assigned. On a personal level, I relearned that Mason is awesome, Roxie is badass and getting totaled by a space station toilet seat is not the best way to go. I also have to mention that Betty’s shot on top of the building in the beginning, with her scarf trailing in the wind is one of the coolest and most memorable shots. Every time I see that shot, I think of how gorgeous the whole image is. I’m not exactly a fan of Rebecca Gayheart but she is pretty amazing right then. Well, her scarf and the wind machine are, actually.

Dead Like Me
Summer Review Intro

Kara - TwoCents Reviewer
kara@thetwocentscorp.com

You think you’re having a bad day? Imagine getting taken out by a toilet seat from space on your first day of work at a temp job. Fortunately for George Lass, that’s not where her story ends. The first time I watched the pilot for Dead Like Me, it completely blew me away. In the span of two days, nearly everyone I knew had been forced to watch it and it was a unanimous feeling of “oh, where has this show been and how can I see more?” Dead Like Me has the trifecta of what I look for in a great hour of television: it’s funny, touching and intense. It’s also incredibly addictive. I really believe it’s impossible to watch just one episode and beyond that, I think it’s impossible to watch an episode from the first season only once.
