So what happens when Death and the Gravelings take a vacation? Three day vacation, complete with Roxy, George, Mason, Rube and Daisy taking a road trip to the beach? Yeah, not quite. There’s paperwork to be done and lots of it. It’s time to organize and catalog everyone’s final thoughts. They start in Der Waffle Haus but a technology mutiny led by George relocates the group to Happy Time in the middle of the night.

All goes well, except that Rube cannot type, despite his insistence he can and oh, right, Crystal’s there, just staring. Crystal turns out to be the exact opposite of a problem, teaming up with Roxy to type up the final thoughts. In another part of Happy Time, a night’s full of other people’s regrets start taking their toll on Daisy. Mason finally gets Daisy to agree to spend some time with him and he also gets a glimpse at Daisy’s last thought while she goes on a break. Upon seeing the words “Why has no one loved me?”, Mason switches gears and walks Daisy out, putting his coat over her shoulders.
In another part of the world, it’s time again for George’s family vacation to a cabin in the woods. We get to see how happy the entire family was through flashbacks to when George was much younger and Reggie was just a baby. We also get to see the turn the vacation takes in the current year. Clancy is distracted and altogether miserable to be around and his behavior kills all the hope and excitement Joy and Reggie actually had about the vacation. Reggie tries and Joy tries hardest of all but Clancy’s apathy ruins the entire trip. It’s devastating to watch.
George attempts to make it out to the cabin the entire night, reminiscing with her vacation box she stole from her house. When all of the filing and cataloging is done, she asks to borrow Rube’s truck. The final shot of the episode is George driving up and sitting on the steps.
Favorite moments:
+ Young George, Joy and Clancy talking about just moving out to the cabin and living there. George insists she can live without all her toys and Joy finds peace in the idea of a simple life.
+ Reggie and Joy on the dock, as Reggie points out “George was here” carved in the wood from an earlier year.
So, what did you think about Vacation? Dead Like Me is so great at pursuing the little moments and shining a soft spotlight on them. Next week is the last week of the Dead Like Me rewind and I’ll be checking out Rest In Peace, the last episode from season one.
