Dead Like Me
“Nighthawks”

To call Nighthawks a clip show is accurate but completely misleading. It’s time for the reapers to do a self-evaluation at 2am at Der Waffle Haus because as Rube explains, that’s when they’re less guarded. All of the reapers, except for George, set up for what proves to be the longest self-evaluation in history. George wanders in, unable to sleep and is offended she didn’t get invited to participate, despite Mason’s warnings to get out while she still can.

The clip show aspect of this episode is actually a really small part. One of my favorite parts of Nighthawks is Kiffany. We all know her and see her every week as the long suffering waitress who has to put up with Daisy’s requests and the huge orders of Rube and the crew. This week, she’s pulled into the action by Mason who wants to know her answer to one of the questions. Daisy then asks her how she feels after she completes a job, to which Kiffany answers, “I hope they’re happy.”

Meanwhile, George finds out that Rube has a post-it with her address on it. They argue and she goes to wait it out on her front porch. In typical Rube form, he shows up, not mad but with a cup of coffee and a bunch of kind words. Turns out the soul being reaped there is none other than the milkman. He’s a very nice man, who meets an unfortunate end thanks to a graveling but as Rube leads him away, he tells the man that he’ll enjoy his new route.

It’s the little things about this episode that make it incredible. I love the moments where they’re all sitting in their separate booths, contemplating the best answer. Daisy and Roxy also have a moment where each seems a lot more complex by just the look on their faces. There’s this one moment where Roxy is looking out the window, towards the end of the night and there’s just so much in that one look. It’s really powerful.

So what did you think? Better than your average clip show? Leave your TwoCents in the comments. Next week, I’ll be rewatching and reviewing Vacation. It’s Death’s day off but the reapers don’t get a break. Instead, they’ve got heaps of sorting and filing to do.
