The season finale opens up on Jason Stackhouse in the big house (yes, yes, that was my lame attempt at a pun, feel free to throw tomatoes) and he’s busy allotting out his belongings to... Rene! Jason! Don’t do that. You can’t trust him to make sure people get the right stuff, he’s a murderer remember?! Oops, spoiler. I think you all knew that though. Sookie shows up and makes a big deal about her Dick Tracy work and effectively alerts Rene to how close she is to finding the murderer. Smart. But Jason’s having none of her assurances and continues to insist that he killed those women.

It was an interesting week in Bon Temps, Louisiana. There’s a road trip and a confession. Lots of people take dirt naps and Bill gets parenting advice from Eric. Good times.

Welcome to THUNDERDOME! Break a deal, spin the wheel! Someone over at HBO has been watching much too much Mad Max (I’m looking at you Mr. Ball) because whoever built the location for the tribunal had a case of Max Envy. Just sayin’. But we’re not actually there yet. So let’s take it from the top.

Disclaimer: I’m breaking my number one rule here (no book info) so I can gripe about some things. But rest assured, I won’t spoil you for things to come.

True to form, the episode opens where we last saw Sookie. Long Shadow is attacking her and Pam and Eric watch. Bill, however, can’t let Sookie get killed, so he stakes Long Shadow. Okay, this is point of contention one. In the book, Eric stakes Long Shadow and it’s an important moment in character development. One good side of this scene though, is that we get our first taste of the Eric and Pam banter and the dry humor of Eric’s. These things I did like and was happy to see carry through the episode.

First things first, Bill is not dead, which wasn’t really all that much of a cliffhanger anyway because we all know Moyer is contracted into season two, but whatever. Aside from Bill being… um…un-dead, tonight’s episode goes to great lengths to teach us that when we complain that the sex is too dirty, they take one step further and go… dun, dun, dun…literal! But we’ll get to that later.

Tonight’s episode is pretty much about give and take. It’s about being vulnerable and open to the unknown. All of the characters do something new and different and sometimes that works out for them. Oh, and Eric was back this week, though far too briefly, and he didn’t bring better sex like I had hoped, but he did bring electronics!

Well, Gran’s dead and Sookie’s coping in that numb, shocked way that you do when you don’t quite know what to do. But Bill’s there and so is Sam and so is that awkward tension that seems to follow the two of them. And this episode is all about death and sex and family and what to do when you’re crazy and/or possessed by demons. But we’re not really going to delve into that because I’d need twenty pages and I haven’t got them. Sorry.

Hi, and welcome to the Alan Ball Tolerance and Acceptance Power Hour. Today we will be discussing why it is wrong to: a) be a redneck, b) not understand metaphors, and c) pick on Lafayette. All are possibly punishable by death from one of our handsome and mysterious murder suspects. Also, we will be showing you the power of metaphor through our patented “Beat it Into You” technique.

Tonight’s episode is all about Eric, Eric and Eric. Oh, and Jason’s got an erection to end all erections (oh, irony, how I love thee). But getting back to Eric…. Our Viking sexpot does not disappoint. I squeed, I flailed, and to quote my friend Jordan, I squailed. Now you all know my dirty, little secret; I am a fangirl. And I’m not ashamed.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

It is important to remember when watching tonight’s episode that HBO loves sex and laughs. Also, if you’ve read the series, it is important to remember that the TV show will be different from the books – please do not form a mob and there will be no need for pitchforks and torches. Despite the cries of book-fan outrage, this episode was one of my favorites so far.

Please see the words flashback and exposition in your handy dictionary prior to reading this recap. You will need to know them, as this week’s episode is heavy on both. Oh, and while you’re looking in there, you might want to look up stupid and see if there’s a picture of Jason Stackhouse next to it. There will be a test.

Oh my stars, where to start? We’ve got a lot to cover, so let’s start with a list, because I’m fun like that!

The Good:
1. Casting. I like all of them, even the ones I’m not supposed to.
2. The music. What do you guys think? Awesome? I loved it.
3. The way they handle Sookie’s telepathy. Unlike the fangs, this is not cheesy at all.

The Bad:
1. Fangs – The concept is cool (they spring forward like a rattlesnake’s do), but they look cheesy.
2. Vampire Sex. Okay, obviously Sookie is going to knock boots with a vampire at some point and I’m concerned about the precedent that the vampire sex in this episode is setting. I guess we’ll just have wait and to see.
