Tonight’s episode is all about Eric, Eric and Eric. Oh, and Jason’s got an erection to end all erections (oh, irony, how I love thee). But getting back to Eric…. Our Viking sexpot does not disappoint. I squeed, I flailed, and to quote my friend Jordan, I squailed. Now you all know my dirty, little secret; I am a fangirl. And I’m not ashamed.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

When we last saw Sookie she was screaming her little ponytail off over Dawn’s dead body. Jason shows up with beer and flowers to make up for the fight the night before. Who says romance is dead? But then the show really kicks off with a brilliant set of scenes juxtaposing the real, palpable, sadness taking place inside Dawn’s house with the phony, small town gossip-driven drama outside. Arlene and Rene argue over doilies while standing across the street like they’re waiting for Fourth of July fireworks and Hoyt’s mama fusses and quotes Tennessee Williams. It’s sad and it’s pathetic and it’s real.

Jason gets arrested, to no one’s surprise, but soon realizes that he has V-Juice still in his pocket. So, sitting in the back of a squad car, waiting to be taken in for questioning, Jason drinks the entire vial. He is just too stupid to live. I kid you not.

Sam shows up and has a sweet moment with Sookie and there’s a gratuitous shot of his crotch, err, belt buckle.

Back at the police station, Jason’s getting the third degree, but that’s cut short when he makes a panicked run for the bathroom, his penis having finally betrayed him. Tara shows up and springs him by lying and providing an alibi, even though she was with Sam that night. Later, Jason ends up in the walk-in fridge at Merlottes with a steak over his crotch and Tara hauls his lousy butt to the hospital where Dr. House gets far too friendly with Jason’s crotch and a big, fat needle. Sucks to be you, Jason.

At work that night, Sookie does Gran a favor and tries to listen in to people’s thoughts to clear Jason’s name and discovers that there is a vampire bar in the near-by town of Shreveport. So when Bill shows up, Sookie makes a non-date with him to go to Fangtasia and see if they can get any leads on who’s killing people.

At Fangtasia we meet Pam and my inner jury is still deliberating on her, but the bar is full of vampires and fangbangers and looks pretty darn cool. We soon meet Long Shadow and I have to say, he’s one creepy dude. Who here thinks he’s in on something he should not be?

Okay, forgive me for another moment here. I need to interject some serious business into this recap. I promise never to do it again:

The two best parts of Sookie’s trip to the infamous vampire bar are, by far, Sookie and Eric, both separate and together.

From the moment Sookie enters the bar, she’s more delightful than I have yet seen her. I don’t know if this was on purpose or if Paquin was just in the zone when they were filming this, but - while I liked her from the start - this is where she really starts to channel Sookie. She’s sarcastic and slightly disobedient while being ridiculously polite and respectful. And that’s the heart of Sookie; she rarely forgets her manners, but she’s no wilting flower and her mouth sometimes gets carried away. Sookie is in her element when in the company of vampires, whether she wants to admit it or not, because they, like her, don’t really fit in with society. I would like to believe that this was intentional because it tells me that they are paying attention to who these characters are, but it’s too soon to tell.

As first impressions go, Alexander Skarsgard nails it. He’s mysterious and demanding and threatening and sexy and in charge and I’m out of adjectives. As soon as we see him he looks interesting and bored (okay, I lied, I had more), which is completely accurate. His speech is slightly stilted, which is also fairly accurate when he’s being formal or annoyed, and from the tone of the scene, I think we can assume both are true.

Phew, I’m glad that seriousness is over.

So, Sookie meets Eric, much to Bill’s annoyance. If I didn’t love him already, I would now for the sheer fact that he says “Soookie” instead of “Suckeh.” Anyway, she asks him if he had seen either Dawn or Maudette. He has seen both, but only “tasted” (coughhadsexwithcough) Dawn. He pretty much demands that they sit down and have a visit, but before Eric can talk his way into Sookie’s skirt, something he’s clearly trying to do, Sookie rings the alarm by saying there’s going to be a police raid and there’s a vampire illegally drinking a live human in the bathroom. Eric, Pam, Sookie and Bill escape out the back door, jump on their Segues and scoot. Okay, maybe there were no Segues, but that effect wasn’t the greatest.

On the way home, Bill proves himself a very scary individual by glamouring (shiny new word) a policeman and taking his gun in the creepiest way possible. He scares me in a way the Bill in the books never did. I like it.

We end on Sam sneaking into Dawn’s house and sniffing and rolling in her sheets. Well, that’s…weird. And I like that too.

What do you guys think? Who did it? Is Eric really as cool as I think he is?

  2. Eric was wonderful. Of course, I, too am a fan of him in the books.

The actor nailed him, and I agree about the actress finally starting to channel Sookie better.

I was a bit disappointed with the casting choice on Pam - she's just not my idea of what Pam would look like. I hope she gets rounded out a bit more like in the books. Maybe I'll like her once she shows more "Pamittude."

    Enjoyed your review!

  3. Eric was definitely perfect. I have started reading the books, and have to say I think he is so much hotter in this part than "Generation Kill." If you are a diehard Skaarsgard fan, I suppose this episode was all about Eric, otherwise, not.

Fangtasia is a bit over the top, but then it is in the books, as well, and was beautifully realized.

Jason is a crock, and I mean that positively - he adds so much humor. So far, he and Tara seem more like caricatures than real people.

I loved Sookie and Bill's bit of barely-contained jealousy. As an actor, he had the juiciest part in this episode - a male trying to retain his cool and his woman in a situation before someone so much more powerful and to whom he owes allegiance. Loved the scene with the cop. If there were any black males watching, I bet they loved it, too. Or gay men, or anyone who has been put in that position and been unable to do what Bill did. That scene was for them. Thank you, Mr. Ball.
