True to form, the episode opens where we last saw Sookie. Long Shadow is attacking her and Pam and Eric watch. Bill, however, can’t let Sookie get killed, so he stakes Long Shadow. Okay, this is point of contention one. In the book, Eric stakes Long Shadow and it’s an important moment in character development. One good side of this scene though, is that we get our first taste of the Eric and Pam banter and the dry humor of Eric’s. These things I did like and was happy to see carry through the episode.

Sookie washes up in the bathroom and Pam brings her some new clothes. In the process she manages to hit on poor oblivious Sookie, which is just funny.
Meanwhile, Bill and Eric chat about the big, bad law he just broke. Eric gives Bill a hard time about why he killed one of his own kind in order to save Sookie. I like this scene. Eric is the Sheriff and he can exact a punishment on Bill for what he did, which is why he threatened to take Sookie, but he doesn’t. He doesn’t like Bill, but he gives him a chance to defend himself to the rest of their kind because he’s a fair leader. At least they got that part of his character right.
Cut to the Stupids, as I am now going to call Jason and Amy. They’re driving home with their kidnapped vampire. Jason isn’t handling this well, but Amy is entirely okay. I swear they don’t have a single brain between the two of them. They stash the vampire in the basement and tie him up with silver. Amy draws some blood, but Jason contests that it’s wrong. He gives in though, as expected.
Back at the Short Bus of Doom and Witchcraft, the witchdoctor is selling Tara on the newest Shamwow…I mean, exorcism. Tara, it’s not a demon, it’s just your screwed up psyche. And since I’m breaking my rule, I might as well tell you that this isn’t in the book either. I don’t love the literal inner demon story line, but that’s just me.
Bill and Eric finish up their chat and he and Sookie head home, only to find Tina the cat dead and tied to the ceiling fan. Ew.
Across town in the Stupids’ makeshift dungeon, they’re high and having some weird sex. The prisoner is tied up in the corner, forced to watch them and I can totally understand his pain. I too am forced to watch Jason have sex far too many times in far too many ways.
The next day, Jason and Amy have a picnic and she exhibits the most ridiculous thought process ever. The kidnapped vampire is screaming and Jason is uneasy about it, but Amy says that everything will be fine because she loves him and therefore it has to all work out. Wait, what? This isn’t the Princess Bride. Dread Pirate Eric isn’t going to spare you because you say please and plead on behalf of love. Jeez.
Sam shows up at Tara’s apologizing for whatever it was that sent her running last time they were together, which is really sweet. Tara, naturally, goes all crazy and pushes him away.
Jason is at work staring at the trees and looking really goofy. I think he’s permastoned, I’m not sure there’s any coming back from using V like that, which is bad considering he wasn’t exactly a stellar human before. Anyway, he gets crazy when Rene starts to dig out some tree roots and nearly gets everyone hurt by tackling him when he’s using a jack hammer. Good going, Jason.
But he’s not the only one having a bad day at work. Sookie’s in a royally bad mood, Tara’s annoyed (and then horny) at Sam for giving her money for the exorcism, and Andy’s getting reamed by Sookie for not solving the murders.
Jason goes home after work and has a heart to heart with the poor vampire in the basement. He’s hurting and starving and Jason starts to feel bad for him, so he gets him some True Blood and they share their feelings. I really have no idea where this is going, but it might be interesting.
Bill is at home playing Wii, which is great because the book version of Bill is a computer nerd, when Eric and Pam and Chow show up. Another point of contention; Chow is supposed to be a sexy tattoo covered guy who is something of a tourist attraction. What’s the point of changing that? Anyone?
Bill goes to Merlotte’s and asks Sam to protect Sookie while he’s gone and Sam agrees, but for her sake, not Bill’s. Eric and Pam pass the time by handing out Fangtasia flyers – always the opportunists - but Eric puts on his scary hat and gives everyone a speech about how he will get medieval on them eventually for burning the vampire nest.
Outside, Bill tells Sookie he has to go to a tribunal so they can determine a punishment for killing Long Shadow and she reacts badly, of course. Eric, Pam and Chow wait nearby and make funny commentary. What I like about this part is that Eric and Pam are snarky and rude and funny as hell, and Bill does not find any of this even a little amusing. Aside from the charges facing Bill, this is a very true representation of the character interaction.
So Sookie decides to sleep at Bill’s after her shift and Sam doesn’t realize she’s left because he was busy having office-sex with Tara. When he tries to catch up with her he’s interrupted by Andy with questions about the nudists story. Sam makes an excuse, runs inside and then Lassie runs back outside. Lassie, who gets renamed Dean, shows up at Bill’s and Sookie takes him in. Then she and the puppy climb onto bed and fall asleep. But when they wake up it’s not a dog in bed with her, it’s Sam.
So there it is. Sam’s a shape shifter. Who saw it coming?
Dread Pirate Eric. I love it! Thanks for the laugh :)
