The Unit - Recap & Review - Best Laid Plans

The Unit
“Best Laid Plans”

Another two weeks since the last episode of The Unit. What else is new? Bob’s in Rome, trying to ferret out some terrorists, while Bridget is trying to work the opposite angle in the Philippines. With only like two episodes left in the season, one only hopes these are the terrorists we’ve been looking for over the last twenty.

Happy Easter. Have some violence and angst with your ham.

Sam is not only trying to take over the Mack/sniper rifle OTP, he’s still trying to hit on Bridget. Bob tells him to back off. He still follows her home anyway. This really reads like a scene out of a Lifetime movie. Complete with really bad attempted rape that gets broken up at the last second.

It’s strange to think there may only be four more episodes of The Unit ever. While this hot and cold fourth season has left me ambivalent about the series’ survival, I have to say it does still have an amazing cast. Heaven knows I’d miss seeing Robert Patrick every week. After last week, though, I’m looking for this episode to pick up my spirits.

We’ve only got maybe five episodes left in the fourth (and possibly final) season of The Unit…so where are our answers? Hopefully, starting with this episode directed by Dennis Haysbert, we’ll get some.

Everything seems just fine for our boys and their families…so of course, you just know it’s going to go really, really wrong. (At least we found Tiffy? Even if I’m not sure that’s a good thing.)

Yet again, it’s been almost a month since the last new episode of The Unit (not that the show has done that much to make me miss it)…and as much as that irritates me, it’s equally as irritating to come back with an episode that should have probably been episode 9 instead of episode 15. At least, it would have made more sense then for us to be flashing back to Syria. I’m not sure who to blame for that – the writers or the network. At this point, it’s probably either or, or maybe even both.

It’s been more than a month since the last new episode of The Unit, which, frankly, wasn’t that great. I contented myself by saying, “Oh, the next one will be awesome! Robert Patrick is finally getting a good Tom Ryan-centric episode, and he’ll be fabulous, and maybe we’ll figure out what the heck is going on around here!” If there’s one thing that makes me happy, it’s the promise of a lot of Robert Patrick.

The Unit kind of got the short end of my stick this week, seeing as it followed the two-hour season premiere of 24. While not always plausible, 24 has been one of those shows that’s close enough to reasonable where if it doesn’t quite make sense, you forgive it because it makes sense enough and you know the writers will eventually wrap it up in a nice package. Unfortunately, watching that only helped point out the plot holes in another standalone Unit episode that seems more filler than forward progress.

Check it out, Unit fans. It’s the episode we should have had last week. Or whatever the week after “Mislead and Misguided” was. To where I’m wondering if CBS screwed up the airing order of this show. Anyway, we finally have some answers, of a sort, and at least we had some really great guest stars.

Apparently, I was wrong. There was one more episode of The Unit in 2008, and it for the most part only serves to highlight the ups and downs of a so far inconsistent season.

Last week, somebody commented that I must not like this show because I find things to make fun of. This episode – obviously setting things up for whatever craziness is going on next week, but more on that later – gave me plenty of ammunition. I love this show dearly, but you do have to call it like you see it. At least it made more sense than “Inquisition.”

It’s been a long, very long week. Yet the second part of our two-parter is finally here and…surprisingly underwhelming.

You’d think we’d open with something in your face, perhaps, but no. Instead, we get the same rehash of clips we’ve seen for weeks (if I have to see that clip of Ryan and Tiffy together for another week I’m going to choke someone), and then hey, it’s the Pentagon. Is something big finally happening in Washington? Nope.

Hey, we got Robert Patrick out of uniform for once! I’m pleased. Apparently he’s in California…along with everyone else. Yes, this isn’t much of a hiding spot anymore. He tells everybody that the wives have been drafted to do some snooping around on a guy named Guilum who might be connected to the terrorists from the season premiere. Bob correctly deduces that this has been a long time coming (didn’t Kim say something about them being there on purpose a few episodes ago? Way to delay payoff, writers). Jonas gets pissed, especially because Molly has no hesitation in signing up. He storms out…and look it’s an Allstate commercial. Ironic.

Just as I’m thinking ‘Trotter’ is an unfortunate name for a college professor, said professor turns out to be Bob Brown, who is undercover in Cartagena, Colombia. Also known as the drug capital of the world. He’s being needled by some woman to fly down for a lecture of some sort. Just when I’m thinking she’s a little too insistent she reveals her two big macho guy friends who are kidnapping him. Not just him, but his two colleagues, who we can all figure out are played by Charles and Jonas. The show seems a little extra-obvious this week. And it was written by David Mamet? Really?

I have never been to Bosnia, but this episode wouldn’t make me want to go there. Our boys – and girl, apparently – are on the ground for a new operation trying to recover some plutonium. Moments into the episode and Bridget is complaining about how they’re behind schedule. I wonder when someone put her in charge; oh, wait, that’s right, she’s not. She just likes to act like it, Apparently, she set them up in a big vacant warehouse somewhere, organizing everything down to picking out their wardrobe. Complete with her in a dress I wouldn’t wish on a hooker. This isn’t shaping up to be one of my favorite episodes.

As we rejoin them this week, the bus is still headed to nowhere…and apparently, the guys are in Argentina on a flight bound for South Africa.

There are certain things that I’ve come to expect from watching The Unit after four seasons, one of which is exactly what we open with for the fourth season: at some point, Mack shoots somebody with a sniper rifle. This is what I’ve missed for the last couple of months.
