Everything seems just fine for our boys and their families…so of course, you just know it’s going to go really, really wrong. (At least we found Tiffy? Even if I’m not sure that’s a good thing.)

But as usual, the President – I mean Jonas – has the answer to everything, and he quickly figures out there is some sort of weird chlorine gas thing going on. Everyone else panics in short order as they try to save their kids and wonder what the heck is happening. Tiffy may actually be the most in charge of the whole group. Who would’ve figured? The whole opening to the episode is like one of those bad 70’s-80’s disaster movies, complete with requisite elderly person who can’t save themselves and the one guy who thinks he knows better.

The best part, though, is Mack, who still retains his sarcasm when his kid asks about trying to find his wife: “I’m trying. See me trying?” he says, phone in hand. However, apparently, no one told him to ditch the homeless guy look from last week. Or told him it’s not really nice to steal oxygen tanks from old ladies. At least he only says that part and doesn’t actually do it. He wants to go save his wife, which is totally insane, but hey, if I were married I’d like to think my husband would want to come and rescue me.

Most of the team is back in the apartment building, save for Tiffy, who is stuck at the school. Charles has a bunch of people in a semi truck. Jonas and New Guy are stuck in the Aerodyne Building, where New Guy starts spitting out scientific knowledge like whoa, because of course on this show the new characters know all. Jonas, meanwhile, finally finds Tom, who’s back at the TOC wondering “Can I have one damn day in this building where nothing happens?” Tom basically tells him that they’re not going to get any help from the under-equipped authorities and have to save the day themselves. As usual. Step one is, of course, to figure out where the gas is coming from, and Jonas is suspicious of a reservoir not far from the city. New Guy figures out it’s a problem with the water filtration system – one that may in fact have Ulterior Motives – and has a smirk on his face like he thinks he’s going to Disneyland.

Mack and Bob, after borrowing some oxygen tanks from one of the other apartments, set out to check on Tiffy, who is attempting to distract the kids by going on a speech about U.S. history. I loathe her something severe, but she may be the most level-headed person in this whole episode. Cue emotional moment where Mack and Tiffy can’t do much more than stare at each other. The boys then meet up with Jonas and New Guy to pile into an SUV and go visit the water filtration plant. This is where my second Robert Patrick scene of the night comes in, as Tom warns the team there is a Mysterious Truck in the area. We know what that means.

Our boys blow their way into the plant and shoot a bunch of random bad guys, none of whom we can identify thanks to all the gas masks and gear. Apparently they’re part of some Aryan group. Once the guys avert the crisis and everyone is tearfully reunited, Col. Ryan tells them that federal interrogators are working on the one bad guy who somehow survived. That the other criminal elements have now wisely – and conveniently – left town, which means that there is no longer any reason for the Unit families to be in California. Well, yay! Although, as Jonas ominously reminds us, this isn’t over yet, because they don’t know who the real bad guys are.

While I’m glad to see the end of the California plotline – really, how many more excuses could we give for keeping the wives cooped up and the boys conveniently going in and out? – I can’t help but feel let down. This was a device set up in the first episode of this season, and fifteen episodes later, the one thing they’ve been waiting for all along, the big bad…is one random chlorine gas attack with no identifiable perpetrators. To me, that feels like step one in a bigger plan, not something we would wait sixteen episodes for a reveal of. This is what all those people we’ve been introduced to were working toward? It doesn’t seem complete, but, at least it’s something I suppose. However, it does seem like the season’s taking an upward turn…are you along for the ride? Or is it too little, too late? Let me know below.
