It's Late Night With..... Jimmy Fallon?!!?

According to Reuters, Jimmy Fallon ("Saturday Night Live", "Fever Pitch") is lined up to take over for Conan O'Brien, once Conan takes over "The Tonight Show" from Jay Leno. You got all that?

"The two leading showbiz trade magazines, Daily Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, both reported that a formal announcement of plans to install Fallon in O'Brien's place as host of NBC's "Late Night" show would likely come next month."

"Clean Shaven Conan"

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

January 28 thru February 1, 2008

PG Ignacio – TwoCents Staff Writer

Conan O’Brien shaved his Strike Beard. No, the writer’s strike is not over. He still supports them deeply, but felt it was time to shave it off. So, if you tuned in to the show this week and thought you were watching re-runs – they were new. If you didn’t bother to watch because you thought they were repeats, you missed some great TV.

‘Late Night’ This Week

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

PG Ignacio, TwoCents Staff Writer

What’s a great way to start off the week of Late Night with Conan O’Brien? Hang and ride a line down the aisle from the audience to the set with smoke coming from your head. Yes folks, picture a six foot five man hanging onto a handle lifting his lanky legs so not to touch the ground, sailing down the aisle with smoke coming from a white helmet covering his huge red head. Can you see it? No? Well I’m sure there will be a video of it up on NBC later this week. If not, you missed quite a sight.

Conan’s guests were Lester Holt from NBC’s Today Show, sex-talk show host Sue Johanson, and musical guest Ingrid Michaelson.

At the end of the show, Conan announced some of his guests for this week: Bret Michaels, Lisa Loeb, Tom Brokaw, Chaz Palminteri, Pink, Sid Hanson, and others.

Tune in to Late Night with Conan O’Brien, he’s doing something wild and wacky every night and its very entertaining. You don’t want to miss it.

My "Late Night" Experience - Story from Conan O'Brien Live Taping

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

PG Ignacio, TwoCents Staff Writer

For my 30th birthday my wife was kind enough to obtain tickets for me to attend a live taping of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. She called NBC several months in advance to make sure she could get tickets to the Friday (Jan 11th) show immediately following my birthday so we could spend the weekend in New York City. It was a great weekend.

We arrived at 30 Rockefeller Center before the required check-in time of 4:15 PM. Our party of four, the maximum allowed in a group, checked in, received a paper bracelet, ticket, and lined up with the rest of the crowd.

Conan’s Return – START OF LATE NIGHT’S FIRST FULL WEEK

Late Night with Conan O'Brien

Original Air Date: Tuesday January 8, 2008

PG Ignacio, TwoCents Staff Writer

Tonight began Conan’s first full week of Late Night since returning to air from the strike.

Conan started his monologue by reminding everyone about the WGA strike and recapped some of the things he’s been doing on the show with out writers - W.O.W. (See past 3 reviews here on TheTwoCents) He decided to mix it up tonight by letting everyone know a little bit about Conan O’Brien:

Height: 6’4
Weight: 178 lbs
Middle Name: Christopher
For a few hours, doctors thought he was a baby girl
Favorite Snack: Cheese popcorn
Favorite Band: 5 of the guys from The Max Weinberg 7
ATM Card Code: 0418
Biggest Mistake: Giving out ATM card code
Favorite Past Time: Looking at this beautiful audience
Finally: “I’m a whore.”

Tonight, Conan introduced the first Late Night Light Show. He pulled out a silver box with a red button on top. He told everyone to pretend you’re at a German disco…The studio went dark, green laser lights filled the studio, and Conan started talking like a German DJ in a microphone. Not once, but twice.

Conan also gave out items from the NBC store to the audience – Howie Mandel bobble head doll, Friends Christmas ornament, Cheers Norm’s Nuts, his coffee table, Biggest Loser Hat (given to La Bamba in the band), My Pretty Conan t-shirt, NBC rain poncho, and a To Catch A Predator book.

Conan’s guests were Hulk Hogan, Regina Hill, and musical guest Nicole Atkins.

PG’s TwoCents: Conan started off the week great and it really looks like his show will not suffer from the strike, no matter how much he verbally admits missing their contribution. I’ll take a break from writing Late Night reviews, unless something really juicy happens on any given night. I’ll be at this Friday’s taping of Late Night and look forward to giving some TwoCents on the experience. Have a great week!

Conan’s Quote: “Would you have that number?” (Response to Regina Hall explaining that Ron Jeremy does infomercials about male enhancements.)

Conan Day 3 - Play That Funky Music Pale Boy!

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

Original Air Date: Saturday January 5, 2008

PG Ignacio - TwoCents Staff Writer

How did Conan finish his week’s return to TV? Very strong and entertaining.

Conan spun his wedding ring for a third time on national television. He introduced his rehearsal ritual to the public during his return show on Wednesday night (Thursday morning) attempting to beat his record time of 41 seconds spinning. He fell short again in front of the crowd with a time of 31 seconds.

This prompted Conan to verbally assume that his audience and viewers are questioning his showmanship. So what did he do? He put on a shiny blazer he explained as being on loan from the Liberace Museum, put on a black cowboy hat, grabbed a guitar, and led the band in a rendition of Elvis Presley’s “Blue Moon of Kentucky.”

Conan’s guests: Bill Maher, host of Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO; Jim Cramer, host of Mad Money on CNBC; Mike Destefano, comedian.

PG’s TwoCents: Bill Maher wasn’t very interesting and the audience seemed bored with his political commentary. Even Conan seemed uncomfortable with Bill Maher’s dialogue. Conan’s next two guests, always lively Jim Cramer and comedian Mike Destefano, woke the audience back up. Singing and playing the guitar with the band on “Blue Moon of Kentucky” was a great way to end the week. The man can entertain, plain and simple. I look forward to what he has in store for his fans next week.

Conan’s Quote: “Olive Garden, pretty good for the money.” – Yelling into a megaphone during his interview of Jim Cramer, when discussing the topic of Olive Garden not being authentic Italian, just “pretty good.”

Conan's Return - DAY 2 - ‘Late Night’ W.O.W.

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

Original Air Date: Friday, January 4, 2008

PG Ignacio - TwoCents Staff Writer

How will Conan O’Brien follow up his first night With Out Writers (W.O.W.)? This is what I asked myself when I sat down to watch Late Night with Conan O’Brien. He delivered.

His monologue began as a reiteration of his sincere support of the writers on strike and a reminder of his new scruffy facial hair. A sort of recap if you missed last night’s show. He then proclaimed he would do something he has never done during the 14 years of his show. He pointed out a catwalk above the set that he explained he never really noticed and had never been on. He climbed a rope ladder to the top and operated a small camera. He looked into the camera and explained he loves his set and presented footage of the set during the strike.

This pre-recorded footage was of Conan on his set at Studio 6A during the strike. Conan interrupted NBC pages and the tour stops at his studio. He stood there holding a mic for the page while she referenced incorrect information about Conan’s biography. The second page he interrupted, Conan felt was insulting the size of his set and even caught him incorrectly referring to his show as “The Late Show.”

Conan’s guests were Megan Mullally of Broadway’s Young Frankenstein; Fonzworth Bentley, new author and former personal assistant to P. Diddy; and musical guest Kid Rock performed a song from his new album, Rock N Roll Jesus.

PG’s TwoCents: I was pleasantly surprised with his second show. The footage of his set during the strike and spontaneously showing up during the NBC tours of his studio were classic. Conan has made his show very entertaining despite being W.O.W.

Conan’s Quote: “In the meantime, I’m going to do my best to entertain you using what I do have – my physical strength, my knowledge of civil war trivia, and of course my raw sexuality.”

“W.O.W.” - Has that acronym been used anywhere else? If not, you read it here first on TheTwoCents.

‘LATE NIGHT’ IS BACK

Late Night with Conan O’Brien

Original Air Date: Thursday January 3, 2008

PG Ignacio - TwoCents Staff Writer

Conan O’Brien has returned. Yes folks, the tall-slim-pale-red-headed-funny-man is back on TV and sporting a new look. He has grown a beard. The question that media and probably most viewers were asking about his return, as well as other late night talk show hosts, was “How will the show go without writers?”

Conan and Leno Statements about Going Back to Work

Both Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno have issued official statements about their decisions to go back to work while the WGA strike continues.

Conan O'Brien:
"For the past seven weeks of the writers' strike, I have been and continue to be an ardent supporter of the WGA and their cause. My career in television started as a WGA member and my subsequent career as a performer has only been possible because of the creativity and integrity of my writing staff. Since the strike began, I have stayed off the air in support of the striking writers while, at the same time, doing everything I could to take care of the 80 non-writing staff members on Late Night.

Unfortunately, now with the New Year upon us, I am left with a difficult decision. Either go back to work and keep my staff employed or stay dark and allow 80 people, many of whom have worked for me for fourteen years, to lose their jobs. If my show were entirely scripted I would have no choice. But the truth is that shows like mine are hybrids, with both written and non-written content. An unwritten version of Late Night, though not desirable, is possible – and no one has to be fired.

So, it is only after a great deal of thought that I have decided to go back on the air on January 2nd. I will make clear, on the program, my support for the writers and I'll do the best version of Late Night I can under the circumstances. Of course, my show will not be as good. In fact, in moments it may very well be terrible. My sincerest hope is that all of my writers are back soon, working under a contract that provides them everything they deserve."

Jay Leno:
"This has been a very difficult six weeks for everybody affected by the writers strike. I was, like most people, hoping for a quick resolution when this began. I remained positive during the talks and while they were still at the table discussing a solution "The Tonight Show" remained dark in support of our writing staff. Now that the talks have broken down and there are no further negotiations scheduled I feel it's my responsibility to get my 100 non-writing staff members, who were laid off, back to work. We fully support our writers and I think they understand my decision."

Leno and Conan To Be New Again

After two months of repeats, "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" will resume broadcasting all-new episodes beginning Wednesday, January 2, 2008 (11:35 p.m., 12:35 a.m., respectively).

The late night shows suspended production due to the strike by the Writers Guild of America on November 5 and have aired repeats since.

"During the 1988 writers strike, Johnny Carson reluctantly returned to 'The Tonight Show' without his writers after two months. Both Jay and Conan have supported their writers during the first two months of this WGA strike and will continue to support them. However, there are hundreds of people who will be able to return to work as a result of Jay's and Conan's decision," said Rick Ludwin, Executive Vice President, Late Night & Primetime Series.

Guest lineups for the shows will be announced at a later date.

"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" is from Big Dog Productions in association with Universal Media Studios. Debbie Vickers is the executive producer.

"Late Night with Conan O'Brien" is from Universal Media Studios in association with Broadway Video. Lorne Michaels and Jeff Ross are the executive producers.
