Conan O’Brien has returned. Yes folks, the tall-slim-pale-red-headed-funny-man is back on TV and sporting a new look. He has grown a beard. Conan O’Brien has returned. Yes folks, the tall-slim-pale-red-headed-funny-man is back on TV and sporting a new look. He has grown a beard. The question that media and probably most viewers were asking about his return, as well as other late night talk show hosts, was “How will the show go without writers?”
Conan’s monologue was significantly short compared to his pre-strike shows. His monologue had a sincere theme and it was directed at the striking writers. He fully supports them, wishes them the best, and clearly recognizes that his show will not be the same until they return. He also explained the reason for his beard – out of solidarity for his striking writers…and also to prove that he does have some testosterone.
So, how do you put on ‘Late Night’ without any writers? Easy. Take a sip of water from your mug and comment on how good the water tastes. After his quick monologue he sat down at his desk, sipped his water and exclaimed, “That’s good water. Killed some time.” The tasting of the water occurred 5 more times during his interview with Bob Saget.
Conan also shared a rehearsal event with the audience that he is very proud of – timing how long he can spin his wedding ring on his desk. His record is 41 seconds. His first attempt was 36 seconds and his second attempt later on in the show went down to 28 seconds.
His next segment was in response to a question he had been asked often, “What have you been doing during the strike?” Conan shared footage of himself in his office, touching on some of the items in his office, and walking around to other staff offices playing a guitar with an amp over his shoulder, while others tried to work.
His guests were Bob Saget, host of game show 1 vs. 100, Dwayne Perkins, a comedian who performed, and musical guest “Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding,” an Elvis Presley tribute band.
PG’s TwoCents: Other then his very short monologue, ‘Late Night’ wasn’t that much different, knowing that he had no assistance from writers. The show was very entertaining as usual and his talent, personality, and ability to carry the show hasn’t changed, showing further proof that he is the correct choice for host of The Tonight Show in 2009.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT: “With all the late night shows off the air, Americans have been forced to read books and occasionally even speak to one another.” – Conan O’Brien
