We meet the new interns get the tour of the ER with all the crazies everywhere. We have the “looks are everything” blonde in the 3 inch heels, the man who can't let go of his cell phone, the quiet and seemingly shy young woman, and the cocky guy who is the surgical intern. We meet the new interns get the tour of the ER with all the crazies everywhere. We have the “looks are everything” blonde in the 3 inch heels, the man who can't let go of his cell phone, the quiet and seemingly shy young woman, and the cocky guy who is the surgical intern. Then they get jerked in line by Dr Banfield, the new chief of the ER, played by Angela Bassett.

The new chief doesn't respond well when Tony and Brenner break into song while working on a patient who mentioned being in a band. Dr Banfield is definitely taking a hands-on approach. Haven't the writers learned that this hasn't worked very well for anyone in the past?

Neela is calling Lucien and talking to Ansbaugh trying to get Lucien reinstated at county since they fired him. Brenner hears about it and coordinates a sit-in outside of Ansbaughs office with a sign saying “The Solution is Lucien”. It was kind of cute. Neela, of course, thinks he's doing it to get on her good side. In the end, Neela shows up at Lucien's door telling him to quit being an idiot and to come back to County if he can. Lucien is wearing what appears to be boxer shorts and a t-shirt... yeah, that might be fun next week.

So, they start helping patients. Tony Gates takes a couple of interns in to an exam room to work on a guy who broke his leg during an explosion. One of the other people hurt thinks it was a meth lab that exploded. They go to check to make sure there's not other injuries and move to cut his shirt off. When they cut, a powder goes everywhere. The patient says it was Ricin, which for those who are unfamiliar, is a deadly toxin that is extracted from the castor bean. Depending on how it's extracted as to how refined it is and thus how lethal it is and there is no antidote. (Hey, give me a break, I'm a geek and that's why there's Wikipedia, right?) They call hazmat and Tony, 2 patients, and 3 interns are sealed into the room until they can setup quarrantined areas. Now, I thought they taught interns things before they actually got to the hospital to be interns. These guys had to ask every little thing. Tony told one to get him morphine and the guy wanted to know what it looked like. Gee, think there might be labels you can read?? It got worse from there. Eventually everything is in place and they are able to move out of the room and go through decontamination.

Another trauma arrives and Banfield is mad because they are supposed to be closed to trauma's and she didn't authorize this one. Archie says he authorized them because it was stupid to send a critical kid across town when they could help. Archie and Banfield butt heads constantly until he just blows up and tells her she has got to stop micromanaging just before they send the kid up to surgery.

The kid's mom is a locksmith. The banks have been keeping her hopping changing locks on houses being foreclosed on. She can't get a babysitter so she takes the kid with her. At the latest house, the kid sees a cat and runs inside after it. Turns out the floor boards were rotted and the kid fell through the floor. She's beating herself up about dragging him around with her and Banfield, after being Brunhilda to everyone in the ER, sits down and tells her that all the kid cares about is that she's spending time with him.

So the CDC says that the ricin was too rough to get airborne so the doctors are safe. One had what appeared to be a psychosomatic response but otherwise was fine. The doctors are released to go home. Sam walks out with Tony and mentions skipping a class that night. Did I miss something somewhere? What is she heading back to school for? He talks her into going and she tells him she's glad he didn't die today.

Archie and Banfield blow up at each other again. Archie gets a bit emotional and tells her that they've been going through hell and they get through it by coming to work everyday, doing their jobs, and they don't need some stranger coming in trying to tell them how to do things. Banfield backs down but says that they will never have another conversation like that one and leaves.

Now, throughout the show, there's been shots of Banfield with looks on her face. As if she's reliving something. She seems sad. I'm assuming we'll learn overtime her background and what's causing those looks but right now, they tend to be a bit distracting to me. In the end, she pours herself a glass of wine and sits down. In the background, we see a picture of Banfield with what appears to be a husband and child just before the show ends. Since they do not appear to be around, I guess that might be what the issue is with her. I guess we'll see, right?

So what do you think of the new chief? I find it odd that they bring in a name like Angela Bassett in the final season but maybe they could only get her for the short term. I'm looking forward to the rumored appearances of past characters. What about you? The previews for next week looks like it's going to be another sad one. Probably not as bad as the opener with the loss of Pratt but we'll see.

That's my two cents. What did you think?
