It's official—Warrick is dead. The season finale left open the possibility that he might live (at least for anyone who had missed the headlines about Gary Dourdan leaving the show) but the writers quickly put that theory to rest, along with Warrick's character, as Warrick dies in Grissom's arms. And I cry...again.
Last season Warrick was framed for the murder of the mobster Gedda. Gil and his team proved that Warrick was innocent, apparently framed by a cop named Pritchard (David Gianopoulos). Pritchard fled and Warrick was exonerated. After a celebratory breakfast with the CSI team, Warrick was approached by Undersheriff Jeff McKeen (Conor O'Farrell): the real mole in the department. McKeen shot Warrick and left him for dead.
We start off the season with a new flood of tears as Warrick dies in Grissom's arms. Needless to say William Petersen rocks this scene. Things don't get any lighter as the alley becomes a crime scene and Nick, Catherine, and Brass arrive.
Brass interviews McKeen who claims to be a witness. He says that he heard the shots and arrived to see a white male fleeing in a car that neatly fits the description of Pritchard's car. Brass takes the bait and immediately amps up the search for Pritchard.
Gil, who is just sitting in the alley next to Warrick's body, completely covered in his blood, wants the case. He escorts Warrick's body to the coroner's office where Dr. Robbins is waiting. I'm happy to report that he's not doing the postmortem, though. Can't say that I blame him.
Gil, still covered in Warrick's blood, arrives back at CSI headquarters. It's very quiet. We see that everyone is in varying degrees of shock and despair. Gil hands his clothes into evidence and returns to his office where he finds Sara waiting. They hug, and she tries to console him.
Nick and Catherine process the scene. They find a bullet and the gun, a .25 caliber, in the car. Warrick's weapon was in evidence and since he didn't carry a back-up, they assume it's the murder weapon. Catherine surmises that the killer stood outside the car and fired. Nick wonders why the passenger side window was down instead of Warrick's window.
He figures out why when he finds knuckle prints on the passenger side window and realizes that Warrick had also turned down his radio. Nick quickly realizes that Warrick would not have opened his window for Pritchard, but would have for someone he knew and trusted. Nick immediately fingers McKeen as the most likely candidate.
Grissom agrees, and they go to validate McKeen's statement that he heard the shots. Gil disproves the statement by replicating the noise that would have been coming from the club in the alley. With that level of noise, McKeen would not have heard the shots as he claimed.
Gil lays it out for Ecklie, who wants more proof. Sara suggests that they try getting a print off the bullet, which has never been done with a bullet the size of a .25. They manage to get a partial print, though. I'm sure Warrick would have been proud. Catherine matches the print to McKeen, which is all Brass needs. He goes to a judge and gets a warrant to arrest McKeen.
Meanwhile, McKeen has been busy driving Pritchard to Mexico. Brass calls McKeen pretending to update him on the case, while Grissom tracks McKeen's cell phone. Nick and Brass find McKeen's car upside down in ditch. It looks like Pritchard realized that McKeen was not going to take him to Mexico and shot McKeen.
Nick finds Pritchard dead in the car. He tracks McKeen into the woods. When he finds McKeen, McKeen is bleeding from a gunshot wound. Nick kicks away his gun and holds McKeen at gun point. He doesn't call in his location to Brass though. McKeen takes this opportunity to try to goad Nick into killing him. Nick doesn't, of course, and Brass arrives to arrest McKeen.
Sara, who can't work the case, has instead made arrangements for Warrick's funeral. She goes to his apartment with Greg where they find that Warrick was trying to get custody of his son. They're all surprised to discover that Warrick had a son, much less that he was trying to get custody. They watch a video of Warrick talking about why he would be a good father. He talks about how Grissom has always been there for him no matter how badly he messed up and that if Warrick could have chosen a father, it would have been Grissom. Aw.
We end with Warrick's funeral. Grissom is giving the standard eulogy until he just breaks down at the end and says that he's miss Warrick. I can't help but agree. I will definitely miss Gary Dourdan and Warrick. CSI just will not be the same.

I'm sure my pregnancy hormones didn't help any ~ but I cried through at least 4 scenes of this episode. While I wasn't upset to see Sara leave, loosing Warrick really does change the way the team will function. I loved his scenes with Catherine & his friendship with Nick.
ReplyDeleteGrissom was perfection in this episode ~ William Peterson needs to be up for an Emmy nod off of this episode. He is a magnificent actor!! I'm going to cry even harder when he leaves!
I agree, I cried almost through the whole episode...and I'm not pregnant! It was so good and I will miss Warrick. Do they plan on a newbie coming in?
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard of anyone coming in specifically to replace Warrick's character, but I do know that there is definitely a major cast change on the way.
ReplyDeleteI don't want to say anything more, because it would be a spoiler, but if you do a search for CSI cast changes, you'll find the change pretty quickly.
I'm glad I wasn't the only person crying! The scene with Warrick talking about Grissom as his "father" was so sad.
