Jake is faking earthquakes to get out of homework. Charlie’s mommy complex is out of control. Alan just needs a hug. It’s a really well rounded episode this week with all the characters and quirks you know and love – at their best.

Jake is the central key to this episode and it’s about time. The whole episode revolves about his aversion to homework – specifically a report on Taming of the Shrew. He’s decided that rather than reading Taming of the Shrew he’s going to pretend there was an earthquake. Yeah – the earthquake ate my homework. Alan finds out and insists on taking to the book store to get a copy and Charlie tags along.
At the book store Charlie decides to investigate the self-help section, at the mocking of a sales clerk. He starts talking to an older woman who recommends a book to him – turns out she’s the author. Charlie and the Old Lady Author totally hit it off and go for coffee. Leaving Jake and Alan to find their own way home from the mall – which happens to entail 2 buses and a walk along the Pacific Coast Highway. At some point on the trek home Jake manages to lose the book they just bought.
Charlie ends up going to dinner with the Old Lady Author as well – and she gets to the heart of his issues. Obviously it’s his mom. And then Old Lady Author kinda starts treating him like she is his mom. And somehow in some weird twist, he seems to like it. Eww! He kisses her but that’s interrupted by her 32 year old son.
Jake loses the book again. Charlie finds it in freezer. WTF?! He complains that the book is in some foreign language.

They go on another date and she plays mommy again. So freaking weird. Why doesn’t he see it? I know Charlie isn’t very emotionally developed but now he’s just not mentally developed either. And it’s ridiculous.

Alan meets Old Lady Author and she ends up counselling him on his insecurities too. Wow, free therapy for everyone! Again, over-the-top, but not creepy which is better than Charlie’s storyline. Everyone ends up going on a little jaunt to Santa Barbara together, much to Charlie’s dismay. Anyway Old Lady Author is SO the new Evelyn. Problem is she’s so not as much fun.

So is it just me, or does this episode prove that Jake-centric episodes are always the best episodes? Give me your Two Cents in the comments!
