To help celebrate it, some young film makers have created a fun web series called Fantasy Life. It's well written, has some great original music and above all, captures the insanity many of those fantasy baseball nuts exhibit! (Myself included)

ESPN Does Another Series

Production has begun for a new six-part (four hours) reality series on ESPN, Varsity Inc. Presented by Old Spice, chronicling the 2007 season of the West Monroe (La.) High School Rebels - and the town’s obsession with the game - as they fight to stay atop the Louisiana football heap. The series represents the first comprehensive effort from the newly established ESPN Content Development (ECD) unit. Produced in conjunction with Jason Sciavicco (the creator of MTV’s Two-a-Days) and his company Horizon Entertainment, Varsity Inc., is tentatively scheduled to debut Thursday, Nov. 29 at 11 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and generally will be aired Thursdays at 11 p.m. through December 27. Additional content support is planned for ESPN360.com and ESPN.com with re-airs slated for ESPNU.

“Varsity Inc. hits at the core of what ECD endeavors will be going forward: it’s a compelling, impassioned story that goes beyond just sports, and offers high quality, multi-purpose content for a variety of our businesses,” said Keith Clinkscales, ESPN senior vice president, content development and enterprises.

Sciavicco, creator and executive producer for the series, added, “Football is an undeniable presence in our culture; Varsity Inc. depicts what it’s like to play the game at a consistently high level. This series will give viewers an in-depth look at the stress, the drama and the dedication these coaches and kids experience. It’s amazing to see how far they will push themselves to achieve success both on and off the field.”

West Monroe Rebels
Currently filming, the series will capture the frenzy and the fervor surrounding the West Monroe Rebels as well as the personal struggles and triumphs of the players and coaches themselves. The team is one of the most successful in Division 1-5A having won six state championships and two national crowns since 1993. Called “West Monroe Mania,” on Friday nights in the fall, the stores close down early and everyone’s either tailgating or talking strategy as game time grows near. On average, some 13,757 fans fill the Rebels’ home stadium each game, several hundreds more than the town population of West Monroe.

X-Games Jake Brown's Crash and Walk Away!

The X-Games. Day 1 Recap.

So here I am, your devoted UFC follower, and I'm sitting down last night watching the X-Games as I do every year. With so many great moments in the past, like Shawn White colliding with another skateboarder during a dual run. Or Travis Pastrana landing the first 360 in competition on a motorcycle. Or who doesn't remember when Tony Hawk kept trying and trying and trying to land a 900 in skate vert best trick and FINALLY did it...what an emotional ride that was. And even last year, when Travis Pastrana landed a double backflip on his motorcycle. This year's X-Games are no different, and it's only been one day of it. But I already almost saw a man die.

That's right. I literally thought I saw a man die last night. First let's talk about this: When you think about someone jumping out of a 5 story building, do you really think that person has a chance of surviving? Even if he does have knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet on? Let's say that same person lands almost directly on his tailbone? Think he may even be paralyzed? Yeah, me too. But that's exactly what a lot of people saw last night, and especially online today that Australian born Jake Brown land the first ever 720 across a 75 foot gap (720=two full rotations) on his skateboard, and then get a little squirrelly going up the quarter pipe on the other side and immediately fall at the bottom of the ramp.

I'll let you know that these skateboards know how to fall correctly. They learn that at the very beginning, and there are lots of falls in this big air competition. But I've never, EVER seen anything like this:

Make sure you watch it till the very end, because you can see just how high he really was. The quarter pipe is about 25 to 30 feet high, then the skateboarders go another 15 to 20 feet up to do a trick. So he essentially fell around 40-50 feet. Everyone is talking about this. Everyone around the sports world is amazed...because he GOT UP AND WALKED IT OFF! The best part of that video is that while everyone is in shock and worried about the dude, Tony Hawk still goes "I can't believe he landed the 720." I thought that was kind of dickish, until I saw what Jake Brown was saying to the medics. "Did I land the 720?"

I remember in college twisting my knee and almost tearing my ACL playing intramural softball, and I had to be carried off the field. I'm big wussy baby compared to this dude.

Oh, and I guess he had ZERO broken bones with all this. It's beyond comprehension.

Hall Call

Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn took their place in baseball's shrine Sunday, saluted as much for their Hall of Fame careers as their character off the field.

I was a huge fan of both of these players. They exemplified the game of baseball and they are deservedly now enshrined with the rest of the greats!

Congrats to Cal and Tony!

CBS Goes For The Yellow Jersey

CBS SPORTS SPECTACULAR's exclusive network coverage of the 2007 TOUR DE FRANCE begins the first of its three hour-long specials on Sunday, July 15 (2:00-3:00 PM, ET).

The second installment of special race coverage continues on Sunday, July 22 (1:00-2:00 PM, ET) and concludes with the final stage on Sunday, July 29 (1:00-2:00 PM, ET) on the CBS Television Network.

For the 94th year, the TOUR DE FRANCE brings the finest cycling athletes from around the globe to one place for one race in what some consider the world's greatest annual sporting event. This year, the race commenced in London and will proceed through 20 grueling stages, covering a total distance of 3,570 kilometers.

Graig Hummer joins CBS Sports' TOUR DE FRANCE announce team along with "the voice of cycling" analyst Phil Liggett, who is working his 35th consecutive year on Tour television coverage, and industry veteran and former pro rider of seven Tours, Paul Sherwen, in calling the action.

CBS Sports once again partners with Versus to broadcast the 2007 TOUR DE FRANCE. Vic Frank serves as producer of CBS Sports' coverage. Production support will be provided by Versus.

Dan Patrick is Going, Going, GONE!

"Dan Patrick, one half of the duo that helped bring "SportsCenter" to its snarky fame in the 1990s, will leave ESPN next month.
Patrick announced his departure on his ESPN Radio show Monday from San Francisco, where he was covering the lead-up to Tuesday night's Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Patrick's last radio show will air August 17. It wasn't immediately clear when his last appearance on TV will be."

WFAN sports talk radio is a staple in the Tri-State area and this year they celebrate their 20th anniversary!

They said it shouldn’t be done and was one of the craziest ideas ever tried on radio, but the critics were proven wrong soon after the launch of the nation’s first all-sports radio station, WFAN-AM in New York. With Suzyn Waldman’s historic welcome at 3:00PM on July 1, 1987, New Yorkers became witness to a major milestone in the radio industry – one that has gone on to spur hundreds of imitators across the country. But none can match the influence and prominence of The FAN, the most-listened to station of its kind bringing in an average 1.2 million listeners a week.

Twenty years later, the station marks its two decade long run at the top with a “WFAN REUNION WEEKEND” featuring a return to the air of former hosts and anchors, Howie Rose, Ian Eagle, Jim Lampley, Russ Salzberg, Bill Mazer and Spencer Ross, among others, on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1.

The station is also hosting an interactive poll on their website, www.wfan.com, where listeners can vote for their top sports moment from among more than 100 on the in-depth list, or submit their own. Notable dates in WFAN’s history:

Some of WFAN’s original hosts were Greg Gumbel, Jim Lampley, Art Shamsky, Howie Rose, and Steve Somers. August 1987: Mike Francesa joins WFAN as part-time host.

At the same time, it was announced the new morning host on Sports Radio 66 would be Don Imus whose program was currently being broadcast in morning drive at WNBC. The FAN also acquires broadcast rights to the N.Y. Knicks and N.Y. Rangers with the switch.

December 1988: Christopher Russo joins WFAN as part-time host.

March 1989: Gary Cohen joins the station as Mets play-by-play announcer and calls games for the next 17 years before moving to the television side in 2005. He is replaced on-air by Tom McCarthy.

September 5, 1989: THE MIKE AND THE MAD DOG SHOW debuts in afternoon drive.

February 1990: WFAN presents its first annual Radiothon benefiting the Tomorrows Children’s Fund. Now in its 18th year, the Radiothon has raised more than $45 million for TCF, the CJ Foundation for SIDS and the Imus Ranch.

October 1993: Howie Rose becomes the main play-by-play announcer for the Rangers radio broadcasts on WFAN and phases out of his night-time hosting responsibilities. Howie is currently WFAN’s lead play-by-play announcer for the station’s coverage of Mets baseball.

March 1993: WFAN’s Ed Coleman moves from middays to Mets beat reporter position, a job he currently still holds. He also serves as a back-up Mets announcer for the station.

August 1993: WFAN begins first of six-year agreement to serve as flagship station for NY Jets football broadcasts.

June 1994: WFAN broadcasts the play by play of the Rangers Stanley Cup victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Howie Rose, Marv Albert and Sal “Redlight” Messina call the game-winning broadcast for the station.

March 1995: Less than a decade after its launch, WFAN is named the No. 1 revenue generating radio station in the country. It holds that position for the next four years.

June 1995: Joe Benigno joins WFAN as overnight host, and Steve Somers moves to middays joining co-host Russ Salzberg.

April 1996: Yankees Manager Joe Torre makes his first regularly scheduled appearance with Mike and the Mad Dog. The weekly Thursday segment at 5:05PM runs throughout the entire baseball season.

October 1996 – WFAN honored by with two National Association of Broadcasters Marconi Radio Awards, including Major Market Station of the Year, and News/Talk/Sports Station of the Year.

August 1999: Live play-by-play coverage of New York Giants football games debuts on WFAN. The station serves as the team’s flagship till this day.

March 2002: THE MIKE AND THE MAD DOG SHOW launches simulcast of their popular program on the YES Network. Sweeny Murti takes over beat reporter duties for WFAN’s Yankees coverage that same year.

February 2004: WFAN announces multi-year agreement to broadcast New Jersey Devil hockey games live beginning with the 2004-05 season.

May 2004: WFAN named as flagship radio station for New Jersey Nets basketball games beginning with the 2004-05 season.

October 2004: Bob Murphy retires as WFAN’s lead Mets play-by-play announcer following the 2004 season. Murphy was an original Mets announcer starting with the team’s inaugural season in 1962.

April 2006: WFAN begins online audio streaming at www.wfan.com

Baseball Remembers...

60 years ago Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball.

The celebrate the day, MLB has agreed to let any uniformed player, manager or coach to wear the number 42 (Robinson's number with the Dodgers) for games played this Sunday.

The number 42 was retired by every team in baseball in salute of Robinson in 1997. Only players who currently wore the number could continue to do so. Mariano Rivera, the Yankees closer, is the only player still wearing the number.

Many in baseball will take advantage of the ability to show their respect for Robinson. Here is a team by team breakdown (as of this post):

J to the LO, she is from "the block" in case you didn't know, but I assume you did. You did right? Yeah, that's what I thought. So, instead of waiting for tonight, we'll just jump right in and do the running commentary on tonight's Idol "Latin Night" performance show.

The Cast of "Drive" is in the house, or as I like to call it, the awesome dude from Firefly and some other people.

Ok, if I have to listen to Seacrest butcher the Spanish language all night this could be very painful.

Is it me, or for a "Diva" is JLO pretty down to Earth at times?

Melinda is singing "Sway" and she's "so excited" and "so not sexy". I like Michael Buble's version of this song. How old is Melinda? 40? Rocking some bling. Yeah, she was right, she's not sexy. It's like my Mom trying to salsa...this is a GREAT vocal but rather uncomfortable to watch visually. Paula thinks she looks lovely. Wow, they don't pay Paula enough for this great insight. Simon said much much older - YEAH! Simon and I think a lot a like. Scary.

Commercials. Here's a treat for you. Instead of commercials, I'll be "flipping" to the YES network to take in some of the Yankees game. Yanks vs Twins in Minnesota. Damon is back in the lineup full time, so rest assured. A man by the name of BOOF is pitching for the Twins. I'm not kidding. Boof Bonser.

Kiki is singing Conga by Gloria Estefan. Oh man. Note - JLO is way into helping these kids out. I like it. My favorite mentor so far. Very involved. NOT a strong song for LaKiesha. Yikes. She can't belt and that's her strength. Randy loves her too much. Paula said she was lovely. Seriously. She should write a book. YET! Paula said it wasn't the best! YES!! I agree with her! Simon didn't like it for her either.

AROD smacked a 2 run homer! 2-0 Yanks. That's 6 homers in 7 games. Best start ever for a Yankee.

Commericals
Giambi grounded out to second, end of inning. Crap, that's commercials on both channels now. I hate it when that happens. It's the kryptonite of channel flippers. Andy Pettitte is back on the Yanks and I couldn't be happier. I hope he does better tonight than he did in his season debut. We shall see. If you're keeping track, the Yankee game went to, and came back from commercial BEFORE Idol came back. Wow.

Ryan is pushing the charity performance while Pettitte strikes out the leadoff hitter.

Chris Richardson is singing Smooth by Rob Thomas/Santana. They brought the band on stage with him. Who else gets this kind of production every week? Seriously! Come on! Why are they so in love with this kid? Listen to him, this is BAD! BAD PEOPLE! Fox is saying "People, look at the conga player, ignore the guy who can't sing this!" This is very bad Chris, yet Paula is up dancing. I haven't seen people trying to sell something cool that really isn't since Zima! The judges are on crack. Did you hear him try to sing? They really want him around. I don't get it.

MORE commercials

There are two outs and last year's batting champ, Joe Mauer, is up for the Twins. Grounder to second and Pettitte has a 1,2,3 inning. We like it. But now again both shows are in commercial. The pain! I have to choose between a Macy's ad for sundresses or the guy from "Dirty Jobs" selling pick-up trucks. Game is back on before Idol yet again. Yanks have an off-day on Thursday, so we're all free to watch The Office in real-time. Phew!

Jorge Posada flies out to center for the first out of the second inning. Robinson Cano doubles. Doug M moves him over and here is Melky walking to the plate and Haley walking to the mic to sing Turn The Beat Around. Blake comes into the rehearsal to give the beat. WOW, never seen that.

Haley is all legs again my friends. She's having fun, she's being a show woman. This song is right in her range. Great song choice for Haley. Hard with the FAST words, but she's doing it. Paula isn't up for this? WOW. They must all be sleeping with Chris Richardson. That was the most fun performance of the night. Hands down. Randy called it Karaoke, Paula said it's fun but in a mean tone and Simon agrees with my sell your legs, not your voice as Fox does a slow pan up her body. Yikes. Kid show people. Haley is going to cry again. Somehow Melky is on first and Cano scored. 3-0 Yanks as Damon breaks his bat and grounds out to end the inning.

Phil is chillin with Jennifer now. Phil is going to seing Maria by Santana. Ok, so Santana and Gloria are the only two Latin artists? Didn't they do a Gloria night in a previous season? Phil is the whitest guy to ever sing Latin music. He's like sickly Michael Stipe white. HAHA!! The guitar player blew the Santana solo with the camera on him. I think the judges are going to tear this apart. Phil was not made to sing Latin and he looks so uncomfortable and just cracked the last night like a 12 year old. Sorry dude. A whole lot of "ok" from the judges.

Commercials. Jordin and Blake are coming up. Don't go far. Lead off double for the Twins. Grounder to second. 1 out but Cuddyer moves to thirdbase on the play. John Krasinki from The Office is the voice on the Apple TV commercials. Jordin gets the CocaCola commercial she loves the 80s songs, being born in 89 and all.

HEY! Another Gloria Estefan song. JLo referred to her being like Michael Jackson. Ok. Out of Melinda, LeKiesha and Jordin, Jordin is by FAR the most marketable. She's so fun. I can't see if Paula is up and dancing or not. Yup, she's up. Somehow Jordin made this Latin staple a R&B song. WOW! It was great. Performance of the night. Say it with me people ... 17!! Randy said it was the Yo Factor on BLAM! I would have to agree. If I know what that meant. Pettitte throws another strike-out and gets out of the inning without a run scoring. Nice.

Blake choses "I Need to Know" by JLo's husband. Let it be known the best performance of the night is this band. They are amazing. Ok, on to Blake. I could NEVER pull off wearing a straw hat like he has, seriously. Could anyone not on TV? I don't think so. Blake is comfortable in any genre. That's a huge plus for this young man. At times he has a slight hint of actually sounding like Marc Anthony. Paula is dancing by the way. Randy loved it, Paula did (obviously), and Simon gave him the best performance award and said "so far". Ummm, only Sanjaya is left Simon.

Last Commercial and then "The embodiment of Latin passion" (as Ryan said) Sanjaya who I think just ate a chocolate Easter Bunny cause it's all over his face and looks really sill...wait? What? That's facial hair? Oh, my bad.

Yanks go 1,2,3 and I missed it all.

Sanjaya is singing Besa Me Mucho. Oh dear lord. Unless something happens, that's all I'm going to say about him. Randy said "really good". Paula said "very very nice" and Simon "sang like a 14 year old...wasn't horrible". He'll be back. Crap.

Ok, my favorite was Jordin and Blake and yes, Haley. The bottom three will be Haley, Chris and Phil with Phil going home.

That's where I came in, in my office NCAA pool after Florida won the whole thing. 42 people here played and I was in the top 50%! Top 50% is good, trust me! (Why does this sound like the story I told colleges after high school graduation?)

Could Care Less About March Madness?

Ok, so you aren't into March Madness and the 65 team NCAA tournament brackets. That's fine. You probably aren't alone. I've found two alternative tournaments going on right now.

The World Wrestling Entertainment company is having the "Greastest Wrestlemania Matches Ever" tournament

and

The Chicago Tribune is hosting a "Greatest Character Currently on TV" tournament.

It's Only Fair

Ok, so in the young life of the Two Cents, I've mentioned the Yankees twice. I am a fan of all of baseball, it just happens that I root for the Yankees. However, I can appreciate good baseball anywhere. So, in a salute to my friends in the Boston area I'm linking to Boston Dirt Dogs. It's actually a very fun blog style site to read. They post pictures and fun little stories about the Sox. Sure, from time to time I have to endure some Yankee bashing on the site, but mostly they are just fun stories.
