Battlestar Galactica - Recap & Review - Daybreak Part 2

Battlestar Galactica
Daybreak Part 2

Original Air Date: Mar 20, 2009

It’s taken me a while to be able to write this recap and review, especially as I read that people either loved or hated the final episode. Love or hate, you have to admit that Ron D. Moore was kind of a genius, and I’ve never felt that more now that I’ve gone back and rewatched season 1. Season 1 is where the Opera House started and that completely blows my mind. But I should recap so you’ll understand why.

Battlestar Galactica Jumps To An End

We are coming to the end of what have been for me, the greatest four seasons of my television viewing career. Battlestar Galactica, though snubbed by the Emmys (for shame) was the most critically acclaimed television show on the air and will easily go down as one of the most relevant TV shows in television history. The secret to making a show great the way BSG is, is by having a definitive beginning, middle, and end with little straying from core concepts. (Hello, Heroes writers? I’m looking at you.) Of course, not every episode can be great, as proven by the six or seven (out of 80) episodes that have little to do with anything. A solid shock factor – as in ‘I can’t believe they just did that!’ – is also necessary. How many of us knew that the show was going to be different as soon as Six snapped an infant’s neck?

One episode left. That’s all there is; just one more chapter in this 80 episode book. Can you believe that the mini-series premiered way back in 2003? For seven years this show has been a part of our lives, long SCI-FI hiatuses of death be damned. I have to admit that I got a little choked up realizing that this was the last time I was going to hear ‘next week on Battlestar Galactica’.

The only thing I could think while I was trying to figure out where to start this recap was This ship is going down faster than Titanic. Maybe not literally, but with all the groans and light flickering it was an easy thought to have. Plus, have you ever listened closely to the soundtrack? Some of the songs have that Titanic feel to them. I don’t know; I hope this connection isn’t my brain’s way of coping with the end of the show. And it hasn’t even ended yet. We are on the final notes though, so let’s get to it.

There are only three episodes left, ladies and gentlemen. Three left to answer all of the questions we still have. While this episode wasn’t the most spectacular, it did set the ball in motion for the end. (Which I’m still not prepared for even though this date has been set for a while.)

TwoCents and Five Questions With...

...Tricia Helfer, Actor

You may know her as Six... or Caprica, or Gina, or Shelly, or Natalie... and that’s just on one show! Tricia Helfer took time out of her busy schedule to answer our questions about the end of Battlestar Galactica and her new beginnings on Burn Notice and Chuck. Don’t worry, we made it out alive.

Question: How have you managed your career jump, from being discovered as a model in Alberta to Battlestar Galactica and Burn Notice and Chuck?

You know, after three weeks of intense, edge of your seat action and revelations, this episode left me wanting a little more. I know that not every episode can be an edge of your seat event, but now there are only four episodes left and I’m wanting a little more. What we did get, however, was a little stirring of the pot.

I’m going to be honest with you all, here. As I was watching this episode play out, I thought to myself: “Where do I even begin recapping this?” There was so much information dished out, which made this episode seem like the payoff we’ve been waiting for with just five (!) episodes left.

You know what’s better than one really great episode of this show? Two really great episodes back to back. After last week’s ‘to be continued’ and all the heart stopping action, this week’s episode was the perfect conclusion of the mutiny on Galactica story-arc. Here are the things you need to know about the most recent episode.

So, here’s the thing. If you watched the episode on Friday then you know my recap could easily be: “OH GODS; GUNS BLAZING AND FRAKKIN’ CHAOS!”. However, because I am a professional, I’m going to try and be just a bit more coherent for you all. Still, there was a lot of action and an action recapper I am not so you’ll just all have to bear with me. There aren’t even five things that happened, just one large epic event.

After 217 days, we have finally seen the first of the finale episodes of Battlestar Galactica. I won’t lie; I was tense, nervous and excited in the days leading up to Friday and now that the episode has aired, I’m left thinking one thing: What the frak? I’m also trying out a new style of recapping. Because I could go on for two pages about the dark downward spiral of Adama and Roslin alone, I’m going to recap the top five events that need to be known.

Battlestar Galactica MOVIE News!!

Battlestar Galactica fans are getting a sweet payout for having to wait (im)patiently for new episodes in the final installment of the series. SCI-FI has released the names of actors who have signed on to appear in the upcoming movie. Among the actors scheduled to appear are Edward James Olmos, Michael Trucco, Aaron Douglas, Tricia Helfer, and Grace Park. Ominously, in what may or may not be a slip of a spoiler, Mary McDonnell has not been scheduled to appear. What does this mean for our favorite President? Leave your Two Cents in the comments!

"Battlestar Galactica" Summer DVD Review - "You Can't Go Home Again"

Battlestar Galactica
‘You Can’t Go Home Again’

DVD Season 1

Brittany – TwoCents Reviewer
Brittany@thetwocentscorp.com

To the casual viewer of Battlestar Galactica, on the surface this show is what it is: The human race fighting a near perfect and near immortal enemy that comes back every time it’s killed. There are fights in space, intense moments when the fleet just barely gets away from the next nuke and leaders who say they know what they’re doing, but don’t really know anything about the situation they’re in. But for the more dedicated viewer; the one who has watched from the mini-series forward, by episode five you already know that this show is about relationships. ‘You Can’t Go Home Again’ explores one such relationship: the relationship between father and daughter.

Okay, what?

No seriously, what was that? What just happened? I usually sit down at my computer after the episode ends to get out some initial thoughts, but this time, I just stared at my T.V. in shock. Of course, my over-riding thought was ‘What in the frak did humans do to Earth?’ followed closely by ‘We have to stop pollution and war, NOW.’ What caused that? Did we do that to the planet or were we attacked? Or, did the Cylons take us out before we even had a chance? I’ve kind of started at the end here, Tarantino style, so let’s go back to the beginning and work our way back to this.

Could someone please hand Mary McDonnell an Emmy? Just hand it right to her because there’s no need to go through a selection process or a nominee category. I can’t begin to express accurately how amazing she was in this episode (take her performance in Taking a Break From All Your Worries and multiply it by about ten thousand.), and while we’re at it, let’s just hand Edward James Olmos an Emmy too. He was in this episode for all of a few minutes, but it was the powerful last scene that should sway Emmy voters.

Galactica, you’ve done it again. Some people say this season has been a complete disaster, dismissing the show after a couple of misses even after three stellar episodes. Some say that the writers are relying too heavily on used story lines – shootings, namely. To all of that, I say, perhaps you are being too harsh on a show that may not be what it was in season one, but slipped and has now found its footing again. At its heart, this show is about conflict; how do we survive, how do we live, how do we make the decisions we make, how do we love? I’m not here to preach though, so let’s get on with it!

Can I just take a moment to be capslock, please? Just for a second, I promise.

WHAT JUST HAPPENED?

Okay, thank you. That was my reaction for a total of twelve hours after seeing the episode. I’m not usually one of those ‘let’s e-mail and instant message everyone on the internet’ kind of people after an episode of this show, but Friday night I was calling people I’m sure don’t even watch. It was that good.
