One episode left. That’s all there is; just one more chapter in this 80 episode book. Can you believe that the mini-series premiered way back in 2003? For seven years this show has been a part of our lives, long SCI-FI hiatuses of death be damned. I have to admit that I got a little choked up realizing that this was the last time I was going to hear ‘next week on Battlestar Galactica’.

This is an episode of establishment: Where were our characters before the fall of the Colonies compared to where they are now? Adama has two healthy sons and is being persuaded to do something down on Caprica; something to do with Galactica? Who knows, but while he lives the life of a man on leave, Lee gets ready to meet Kara for the first time at the apartment she lives in with Zak. The mini-series established that Zak died two years before the war, so we should assume that it’s at least that long ago. For some reason (maybe the dinner doesn’t go well; maybe we’ve skipped to Zak’s death?) Lee is drunk, chasing pigeons out of his home with a broom. (Admittedly, this was the only truly ‘wtf and not in a good way’ moment of the episode.) Back on Galactica he’s in charge of stripping the ship and allocating parts while Bill packs his life away to be shipped to the cylon basestar. As he wanders the halls one last time, he spots a photo of Hera and Athena and his resolve hardens. There’s one more mission the Battlestar has to carry out: the rescue mission of Hera Agathon.

On Caprica, Six and Gaius start their relationship that isn’t much different than any other Gaius Baltar conquest. As he gets busy with Six in a limo, he gets the call that his senile father has discouraged yet another home healthcare nurse from keeping her job. Gaius goes on a rampage, hitting his father and berating him for being a helpless old man. Six watches all of this unabashedly before letting herself into his apartment a while later. She changes the game; makes him appreciate her by finding a nursing home for his father that will allow him to farm once again and do the things he loves. And now, Gaius is on Galactica, asking Lee to let him be important again; Lee pointing out that nothing Gaius has ever done hasn’t been for purely selfish purposes.

Laura continues to die slowly in sickbay but her life was once full. She had two younger sisters, one pregnant and ready to give birth. Laura throws a baby shower and she’s so happy and radiant; laughter is so rare on this show that we’re reminded of that as she laughs away. And then overnight everything she has is taken away with a visit by the police. Her sisters and father have been killed by a drunk driver. In all of her grief she leaves her house in her pajamas and goes to the fountain in the marketplace, wading in to let the water wash away her pain. Three months later she’s being persuaded to go on blind dates with men named Sean Allison but still, nothing will ever be the same.

Adama reminds Kara that she is his daughter; that she always will be before drawing a line with her down the middle of the hanger deck. After talking with Hybrid Sam, they’ve found the location of the Colony where Hera is being kept. You can go starboard side and fight, or you can go to the port and escape to the basestar. Either way this is likely going to be a one way ticket, and decisions are made. The Five join the Admiral, and Laura shaky and weak makes her way to stand with them. She embraces Starbuck as the younger woman holds her up and in our final moments we see the show as it always has been: War strategy; a game plan for saving those who cannot help themselves. One last epic battle that humanity will hopefully live on to relive to their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

I have a strong attachment to this show and I think it shows in my recaps. I’m so invested in these characters; it’s obvious which are my favorites. There are other things that happened; Chief realizing that the Eights – hell all of the Cylons – can’t be trusted. There was a flashback to Anders as a Pyramid player where we realize he’s always been destined to be a Hybrid. Every single one of these flashbacks lend themselves to the end of our show. We find out about some heart breaking pasts and how pieces were slowly put into place for where our characters are now.

What did you think? What was Lee’s drunken stupor about; do you think it could have been someone we know who killed Laura’s family? Are you sad and ready or excited and ready for the finale? I think I’m a combination of both. And oh yeah; my theory about everyone fleeing to Kobol? I’ve changed my mind. Now I’m worried that there’s not a chance in hell anyone’s actually going to survive until the very end. Has anything changed in the way you think it could bow out?
