Ahh, nothing like a good nerdcon. This doesn’t bring back memories for me at all. And who is better to represent this episode than CSI’s dorkiest labtech, Hodges! He’s at a convention for Astro Quest, a strangely familiar looking sci-fi show. And who should he meet there but Wendy! It seems that she too is a Quester. They share a few tender dork moments before a shriek interrupts their flirting. An exhibitor is dead, and it doesn’t seem likely that aliens had anything to do with it.

ReplyDeleteThe victim is Jonathan Danson. He was trying to revive Astro Quest with the help of his business party Melinda Carver. They were going to release a new series. It looks like he was beaten up and then his body was dumped on set. Hodges and Wendy are eager to help Nick with the scene but he gets irritated and sends them back to the lab. Ray lets Hodges help a bit of the autopsy and they find something silvery under his nose. Then Hodges goes into a little spacey fantasy about Wendy, which is endearing.
Archie, Greg, Wendy, and Hodges watch a video of Jon introducing his TV show to the fans of Astro Quest at the con. His show turns the idealistic Astro Quest into a violent take on the real world, and the fans aren’t pleased. Meanwhile, Riley and Nick process the scene and find a metal ring that might be the murder weapon, semen on the command chair, and a DVD that shows a cartoon Jon being killed as a traitor.
Hodges continues to indulge his fantasies about Wendy by asking Catherine about the consequences of office romance. It’s cute if a bit premature. Ray talks to Doc Robbins and learns that the COD is blunt force trauma by some sort of silver implement. Hodges and Wendy ID the silver ring as an Alliance Yoke, a shock collar from the show. Greg does a bit more research into the death and finds an article by Dr. Penelope Russell, a college professor writing about sci-fi. Nick goes to a local bar to see if anyone had seen Jon before he died. One bartender says he saw him get into a fight with a group of Questers, who he then IDs in photos. Brass tracks them down at one of their houses and finds a true dork lair.
It seems that they Questers are the ones who made the video showing Jon’s death and they sent their friend Reesa to deliver the video. Evidently she’s unstable, says her friends. Does this have anything to do with the bodily fluids found on the command chair that belong to Jon and an unknown female?
Wendy asks Hodges to come over and watch Astro Quest, just the two of them. Hodges is stunned and confused but then launches into a fantasy about Wendy as a concubine and proceeds to light himself on fire. He overreacts a bit and blames his lack of concentration on Wendy, who instead of canceling the date is glad he’s not oblivious anymore.
Reesa shows up at the bar and the bartender brings her in to Nick. She says she actually liked Jon’s show, and that when she planted the DVD she and Jon had sex in the command chair. She was wearing an Alliance Collar! And Riley finds more dirt on Jon than just his dalliances with Reesa – he’s got pictures with himself and other Questers in the command chair, including one taken a few hours before he was with Reesa of him and Melinda Carver.
Brass interrogates Melinda about Jon – her relationship and her financial backing. She claims that she knew about the other women, that they had an open relationship. She goes to stalk off and Brass notices her purse and takes it for evidence.
A bit more “probing” into the command chair photos leads Riley and Ray to believe that there’s a hidden camera in the command center. In every photo, Jon has his hand on a button. They hope to find the camera and get a picture of the killer, but they can’t find the camera.
Hodges has a House moment and realizes that the command console had a scanner that could have been the murder weapon. Riley and Ray check it out and find blood and a broken light, as well as the camera. Good job Hodges! Another awkward moment between Wendy and Hodges later and there’s another fantasy.
Suddenly Brass knows that Dr. Russell killed Jon! Evidently he attended her classes and stole her ideas for the show. They tousled and she accidentally shoved him onto the scanner. Whoops!
The team is going to watch Astro Quest and Hodges and Wendy refuse the invitation. Unfortunately, their geek love with not come to fruition just yet, as neither want to leave their shift, and Hodges is just a bit too socially awkward anyway.
I can’t even tell you how exciting it was to see a cute, fun episode, especially about two under-represented characters. Now that the cast is so new, it’s nice to see some of the vets getting some recognition. They are so adorable, too! And not that murder is ever really light-hearted, there’s no reason we can’t insert a bit of comedy into the lives of those who deal with it.
*heehee* I loved this episode-one of my favorite scenes was Ron Moore standing up and shouting "YOU SUCK!" when Jon was trying to promote the new series of Astro Quest. Seeing a cameo by Grace Park was pretty awesome too.
