This week, the chefs are woken up at 5:45am by a marching band, leading them outside to look at how much food they wasted during the previous night’s service. That’d be a lot. They then get ushered back into Hell’s Kitchen for a scallop shucking challenge and some of the chefs’ ineptitude prompts Gordon to say, “Un-shucking-believable.” Indeed.

ReplyDeleteThe men win by one and get to go ride on a helicopter to a private island for the day. The women get to spend the day prepping the raw bar for that night’s service. Unfortunately for Robert, his weight means he isn’t allowed to go on a helicopter. Gordon comes up with an alternate plan, for him to take a ferry and meet them there but by the time Robert gets there, the rest of the men are ready to leave. That’s just ridiculous. The producers had to have done that on purpose and that’s beyond mean-spirited. At least Robert missed out on Seth’s stalker rant. Seth rattled off far too many facts about Gordon Ramsay, past the point of what a normal fan would know. It creeped everyone out, including me and especially Gordon. Way to leave a lasting impression.
Back at Hell’s Kitchen, Ji hurts her ankle by what looks like slipping on a wet patch on the floor. I’ve no doubt either Lacey or Colleen are to blame. Ji works through the pain and is a rock star all through service. Carol messes up the risotto a lot and Colleen ruins the scallops. Surprise, surprise, Gordon puts Lacey on showing Colleen how to cook a proper scallop. Likewise in the men’s kitchen, Ben teaches Charlie how to cook risotto. All of the demonstrations during service cause the men’s team to take an hour and a half to get appetizers out of the kitchen. I wouldn’t have waited for that. Honestly, there would be no chance I’d still be there. Let that be a lesson for you: If you plan on going to dinner at Hell’s Kitchen, eat first.
Standouts on the Side of Good:
Ji -- She obviously was in a great deal of pain and while it may not have been as severe of an injury as the burns and cutting off part of your finger mishaps in past years, it clearly would be hard to stand and do that much work in that much pain. Most of the other contestants would have quit during service but she didn’t.
Standouts on the Side of Bad:
As Gordon Ramsay always says, “Oh, dear. Oh, dear.”
Charlie and Seth – Okay, making lobster spaghetti without lobster is a new one. That’s something I’ve never seen before in Hell’s Kitchen so congratulations.
Colleen – Well, it’s Colleen. At this point should we be surprised when she messes something up? She royally ruins the John Dory, so much so that Gordon puts her on the raw bar. Nothing to cook there.
Giovanni – I don’t know how many times I have to say it but if you try to serve raw meat, you should go home. Giovanni’s raw salmon fiasco is ridiculous, especially since he’s supposed to have so much experience.
Who Wins, Who is Nominated and Who Goes Home:
It comes down to who can finish service first, which in itself is an accomplishment in only day two. Usually it takes a couple of nights of service to actually finish and not get shut down by Gordon. The men finish first and win, while the women lose, held up by Carol. Gordon commends Ji, who immediately following service sees a medic and is forced to sit and ice up her leg.
The women decide to nominate Colleen and Lacey, both of which should go home. Unfortunately, Ji volunteers to go home. Why, I don’t know. I know she was in pain but she could have and would have gone all the way. I have no doubt she would have won this year. Gordon has many kind, sincere things to say about Ji. He says she was phenomenal and lets her keep her jacket, telling her it’s “a symbol of pride because you’ve done bloody well.” I liked how passionate he was about making sure she knew she did an amazing job.
So, what did you think? My favorite went home and I’m completely bummed out. I hope she comes back next year because she deserved a fair shot. I was thinking the same thing about hoping Ji gets another shot. I haven't decided two episodes in if I'll keep following the show after this season, but I've seen promising people return on other contest shows, and Ji really was the best there was so far. Poor girl.
ReplyDeleteJD, Gordon has offered people in the past chances to return but I haven't seen any of those people actually make it back to another season. In Ji's case, I hope she does return or that she gets offered something fantastic somewhere else.
ReplyDeleteOnce a few more people go, Hell's Kitchen will get very intense as people's competitive streaks come out. Watch out, it can be addictive! :)
