We're in flashback city tonight as Sarah, Cameron, and Derek work to save a family that's been targeted by a terminator. Unfortunately, they don't know who in the family is being targeted, which complicates things a bit. Sarah and Cameron hunt down the terminator, while Derek delivers a baby. We also learn how Derek and Jesse met, and it's actually kind of sweet, in a suicidal, full-of-death, kind of way.

  1. This episode jumps from past to present to future so much that I'm just going to recap it in a linear fashion instead of trying to follow their crazy timeline.

Past. 6 Months Ago. Sarah and Cameron break into a log cabin and order the father, mother, and teenage daughter who live there to come with them because they're in danger. Oddly, the family is a little skeptical and the daughter even manages to get the drop on Sarah. Cameron takes care of any resistance and Sarah explains that their name was on a list of targets and that they're in danger.

They're also more than a little dysfunctional. Sarah tries to figure out who in the family is the target: the father, the mother, or their daughter, Lauren. All signs, specifically the sign where the banker father does some illegal work for Skynet, point to the dad, so he tries to give himself up. The terminator quickly assesses him as no threat and tosses him out of the way.

The mother then confesses that she's been having an affair with her neighbor and is pregnant. Sarah takes this to mean that the mother is the target. They flee from the cabin, terminator in pursuit, when the father runs the terminator over with his car. They manage to escape, but the terminator is still out there.

Present. We meet up with what's left of the family. Derek's been sent by Sarah to keep them safe while Sarah and Cameron (off screen) hunt the terminator. Apparently, the mother called her lover while they were in hiding which was enough for the terminator to track them down. The father sacrificed himself, so they could get away.

To complicate matters, the mother is very pregnant and bleeding out from a gunshot. The mother knows that she likely won't make it and asks Derek about her unborn child. Derek tells her that he's met Sydney, her daughter, in the future and that she will save many lives. Before he can tell her about Lauren in the future, she gives birth to Sydney and then dies. Derek offers Lauren and her sister a place to stay, but when he comes back from calling Sarah, Lauren and her sister are gone.

Future. A vaguely suicidal Derek has been sent on a mission to find any survivors of a deadly virus. Instead he finds a bunker full of dead people, including a pregnant woman and her son. That's enough to send Derek reeling out of the bunker and then he just kind of stands around waiting to be shot. He's surprised by Jesse who is packing a big gun and lots of snarky comments. We learn that Jesse's team answered the SOS too.

They head back into the bunker to try to find the survivor. They're both wearing gas masks, but Derek tells Jesse that they probably won't work. He's right. Jesse is quickly infected. Fortunately, they also find the survivor. A young girl named Sydney.

Derek manages to get Sydney and Jesse back to his headquarters, even though he's now infected. As he and Jesse lie in adjacent hospital beds, she asks him what he was doing hanging around outside the bunker just waiting to be shot. He tells her that he was waiting for her. Jesse looks touched until she starts hyperventilating. Fortunately, that's the cue for a doctor to arrive with a cure. The doctor injects Jesse and then Derek. Derek looks up to see that the doctor is a grown up Lauren, who thanks him for saving her sister.

This episode was pretty predictable, but still fun. I'm always happy to see Derek on the screen and it was nice to see how he and Jesse met. There was no John in this episode, but I can't say that I missed him.

What did you think? Was it a good episode? Are you tired of flashing back and forward and back again? Did you miss John? If you did, please leave your Two Cents explaining that one to me below.

  2. Remember when Terminator used to be a sci-fi show about robots and trying to kill John and Sarah Conner? This show is suffering from Battlestar Galactica syndrome. Get back to the SCI-FI, people!
