Last week when the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy aired on Thursday night I left thinking, “WHERE did the writers of this show go & can I get the two hours that I just wasted on this show refunded?” Then Private Practice aired tonight & duh…the writers didn’t leave Seattle Grace. They just fled to LA with Addison to join the new ab-fab doctors in the sparkly roller coaster that is Shonda Rhimes universe.

Last week when the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy aired on Thursday night I left thinking, “WHERE did the writers of this show go & can I get the two hours that I just wasted on this show refunded?” Then Private Practice aired tonight & duh…the writers didn’t leave Seattle Grace. They just fled to LA with Addison to join the new ab-fab doctors in the sparkly roller coaster that is Shonda Rhimes universe.
The premiere was just damn good television. Addison finds out early on that Naomi (Audra McDonald) has basically run the practice into the ground financially. Not only that but she essentially accepted money from a couple who were trying to get pregnant so they could use the blood & genetics from the new baby to help their 7 year old son who is dying of cancer. (This is considered highly unethical & a general no-no in the medical field.) Meanwhile, Cooper is counseling a 14 year old boy who is HIV-positive & has no idea. The kid wants to have sex with his girlfriend & Cooper wants his parents to just tell the kid or else there could be disastrous results. Drammmaaa!!!
Unfortunately, the pregnant mother decides that she is going to break her own water with a knitting needle. (Lovely.) This forces Addison to save a 6 month old premature infant & (yay!) will now save their cancerous son. Cooper convinces the parents to tell the HIV-positive boy that he IS HIV-positive when (oops.) he tells them that he & his girlfriend have already had sex. (I smell a sequel to Juno!!)
Meanwhile, on the relationship front Hot Receptionist walks into Naomi’s office & tells her that he can’t be keeping her secrets anymore when there’s nothing between them & he’s getting nothing out of it. (He’s in love with her. And I…am in love with him.) He hands her the keys & quits!! Cooper tells Saucy Southern Doctor that she’s pathologically allergic to relationships & that hurts her feelings. She shows up at his apartment & tells him that she wants to travel with him & have a go at it. (Normally, this would bother me immensely as Violet & Cooper are TOTALLY the new Jim & Pam…BUT I love Feisty Southern Doctor too so I’m excited to see where this goes.) On the Addison front she turns down a date with Pete to go out with the Yummy Cop from last season…who is now a Sexy Swat Team guy. Naomi shows up at Sam’s house & asks if they can just “go back to being us again”.
The next day, however, a very silent hell breaks loose when Sam calls a meeting after Addison tells him about the practice going under. He relieves Naomi of her administrative duties & now she hates Addison for telling him.
All in all, I loved this episode. I feel the way I felt about JJ Abrams when he sucked all of the Awesome out of Alias & put it into Lost which is a far more superior show as a result. Private Practice has all the quick dialogue, engaging relationships, & fabulous medical drama that Grey’s of Our Lives lost two seasons ago. And the best thing? I never have to see a single shot of Izzie in that damn pink prom dress.
