A flashy birthday party with lots of photographers, outrageous gifts that no sane person would every conceivably have a reason to give, and a visit by the New York police department. A flashy birthday party with lots of photographers, outrageous gifts that no sane person would every conceivably have a reason to give, and a visit by the New York police department. Ah yes, Dirty Sexy Money is back on the air and the Darlings in all of their unbelievable insanity are back in full force. But that's why we love them, right? Right?

It's six months after our truncated first season ended, and we're brought up quickly to speed. Patrick and Tripp are still fighting it out because Ellen's putting the "rage" back in "raging alcoholic." Jeremy is doing things like driving up to Lisa George on the street on a scooter and greeting her in Italian (to be fair, Italians really do that). Karen and Simon are still at it (and she's still exposing her lady parts to Nick in semi-public places). Bryan and Bryan Jr. are having an extended visit, courtesy of visa problems that keep them in the U.S. Hm… Also, Nola is hitting on Jeremy in bars. The boy is on fire.

Before we even get to our first commercial break, the shit hath hitteth the fan. Eth. Remember the part about Patrick's wife being, in his words, "a belligerent alcoholic"? Well this ends unhappily. While Patrick steps into the shower, Ellen goes through his briefcase and finds pictures of his transvestite lady friend, Carmelita. So she does the most logical thing for a woman in her position to do: she beats down the glass doors of the shower and when she's about to take another blow, she slips, cracks her head open on the sink, and is laying on the floor in a pile of blood. So Patrick does what smart rich kids do: he calls dad. Dad, in turn, calls Nick. They don't so much suggest that Nick help them get the body out of there… but they certainly don't seem in a hurry to call the police either.

Simon Elder gives Karen a vial of clean-burning, non-toxic fuel that his company developed to give to her father for him to sell and make a bundle. (Because clearly the Darlings need more money.) Is this something to soothe a revelation that Karen and Simon have been bumping uglies for half a year? If not, where is she supposed to say she got it, working on her chemistry kit? It wouldn't totally surprise me if Tripp already knew she was tromping around with Simon Elder.

Lisa was hanging out at the restaurant where she was supposed to meet Nick for a birthday dinner, and she's kind of bummed because Nick is being held up with Patrick, Tripp, and Ellen's body. Jeremy shows up, prepared to romance her, like he does. So like the intelligent, beautiful lady that she is, they drink two bottles of wine and fall out of the restaurant. Lisa, despite protests that she doesn't want to kiss him… does. Just in time for Nick to catch them.

The next day, Bryan Jr. and his mother are gone, much to Bryan's annoyance, and he thinks his father had something to do with it. (His response to Bryan's accusation, "You are full of crap!" is, "Actually, I'm not." I love Donald Sutherland.) Bryan agrees to say he and Patrick were sailing in the Hamptons. Why? Wait for it.

Karen says she might be growing up and her feelings for Simon might be part of that. I'm somewhat skeptic given that her last divorce took place at the wedding reception, but we'll see. I'm even more hesitant to say this can last when Simon calls an undisclosed party after Karen leaves and says, "We've got him." At this point, to my recollection, it is also here that Jeremy meets Nola in the bar again and they go get busy in the back a limo. Awesome.

In a move that perhaps rivals anything in season one for insanity, the Darlings' summer house burns to the ground. It's never outright stated -- but pretty heavily implied -- that the fire was started to get rid of Ellen's body. Let your brain wrap around that for a moment. Okay, with that in mind, we are played the opening scene again -- but this time, we know everything that led up to it. Tripp and Patrick's weird looks take on a new, even sinister meaning, and this time we know Karen hands off Simon Elder's crystal ugly duckling to her father. And the New York police are not there to arrest Patrick for Ellen's murder, as we may have thought -- but Leticia for Dutch's! I smell a lot of overtime for poor Nick.

My Reality Check of the Week for this week goes to Patrick and Tripp, for covering up Ellen's accidental death. Seriously? I mean… seriously? I know it's all fiction, but it took me a moment for this to actually sink in. It is unreal.

Was the premiere everything you wanted since the Nutcracker episode last December? Is Nick going to defend Leticia? Does anyone else want Nick and Lisa to be able to be happy, or is that only me? Will Jeremy finally find a lady to call mia cara? How is Ellen's disappearance into thin air going to be any less distressing to the children?

  2. No, Liz, it's not just you! I for one would like to see Nick and Lisa happy together. I like them together and I like the idea of there being a strong, happy couple on TV - it seems everyone has to have a love interest or a temptation these days. Maybe it's me, but I don't really see the connection between Nick and Karen to begin with either...

  3. I don't know. Do strong happy couple's make absorbing drama (or comedy)? What do you think about the behind the scenes interviews, by the way? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzurWbsvlCg
