Tonight’s episode of Old Christine offers a peek into why everyone on it should probably just avoid relationships altogether. Most of us figured that out already, but tonight is like the one thing we can show people who aren’t fans as proof.

Richard, having come over because Christine called him for the emergency of the TV being in Spanish, tells Christine how much he enjoys being her friend. Which would be sweeter if he weren’t trying to get their engagement ring back. Though, with the marriage over and it belonging to his mother, I understand. Agree/Disagree? After he leaves, Matthew comes in announcing he’s off to see his first patient, which earns his required dose of teasing. But as Christine can’t find her ring or remember her son is at school, I don’t know that she can talk. Richard re-enters and says he’ll buy her a new ring if she gives back the old one. Her love of pretty things beats her resolve.

We next see Mathew preparing to meet his new patient in horribly awkward fashion. But she turns out to be like that “Just Kidding” woman from the news skits on Saturday Night Live (you know the one), so everything’s okay- until he accidently calls her beautiful. Going just as well is Christine and Richard’s trip to the jewelry store. The rings are ridiculously expensive and they start to fight like . . . well, a normal divorced couple. And then Richard lets slip his mother is the one making him take back the old ring.

Christine expresses her outrage to Matthew, and can’t understand that her ex-husband can no longer be hers to control. Finally he convinces her to give the ring back, but she can’t find it. Of course, he’s the one in love with his patient, which is why he should be running away from her when she tells him she’s attracted to “intelligent men” like therapists. Between him locking himself the bathroom to escape her and the fact Christine lost her ring while drinking, binging on Chinese food, and being depressed enough to try on her old wedding dress, the whole family needs therapy. Proving this, Matthew re-refers Lucy to stop her being attracted to him, which does not work at all and they end up making out. And Christine apologizes to Richard for losing the ring, and the two of them start making out, too. Cliffhangers! What do you think will-or should- come of all this?

What Old Christine Taught Me This Week:
    1. Christine has “giant sausage fingers”.
    2. That apparently shrink enough for a ring to fall off when she gets drunk and depressed.
    3. The whole marriage thing doesn’t go too well on this show.
    4. Mostly because it’s full of idiots.
    5. But I’m not much better, because I kind of think Matthew and Lucy are sweet, even though it can’t possibly work. Someone slap me, guys.
