As the Red King Crab season is winding down, the fleet is frantically racing to finish up with strong numbers and meeting their quotas. We are introduced to a new vessel that comes out of retirement with a familiar face as a deckhand. We see hard work, a practical joke and concerned captains. Just another week on the Bering Sea.

    The Northwestern-

Captain Sig is back on the hunt. The Northwestern is fresh back from an offload of 180 thousand pounds of king crab, which brought in a cool $756,000. (So THAT’S why they do this). Sig has a limited time to be able to make a new quota before the King season ends. He decides to pull his pots from his successful first string and move to different grounds. Edgar isn’t buying it. Unfortunately for Sig, Edgar was correct. The first string of pots in the new location had low numbers. This will keep the Northwestern out longer and give more work for the disgruntled crew.

    The Time Bandit –

Captain Jonathan is guiding the Time Bandit through 40 knot winds bringing in their catch. He is still seeing great numbers rolling in even through all of their bad omens this season. The crew is toiling through the storm and all of a sudden a 40’ long cable snaps from the crane and barely misses Greenhorn Shea. If a pot had been tied on to the cable, it could have killed Shea instantly. Captain Andy makes a precarious climb up the crane to repair it in a breathtaking moment.

    The Early Dawn –

Captain Rick is still seeing poor crab numbers. And the crew is still leaning on Greenhorn Brian. They’re still upset because he fell asleep at the wheel and they’re taking it out on him through his work. Deckhand Mike decides to challenge Brian by offering to switch jobs for 20 pots. Brian will work the rail and Mike will take bait duty. He hopes this will inspire Brian to work harder (and better). Brian quickly realizes how difficult the rail is after 6 tries throwing the hook. The good news is that the new grounds are producing more crab. Things are looking up.

    The North American –

We are introduced to a new vessel this episode and it’s captain, Sten Skaar. The North American hasn’t fished in the Bering Sea for 3 years, and is back on the hunt for Red King Crab this season. We see a flashback of Sten convincing his father that the vessel should come out of retirement. He’s determined to get the numbers to justify the return. Before they drop the first pot, Sten introduces his familiar deckhand, Erik Nyhammer. Last we saw Erik, he was the captain of the vessel Rollo in season 2! Sten hopes that the experience of two captains will bring success to the trip. The first string of pots doesn’t bring in a lot of crab, however. But they do pull in a port-o-potty that Captain Keith left for him as a prank.

    The Wizard –

The Wizard is docked in Dutch Harbor for it’s first offload of the season. He estimates that they have pulled in 200 Thousand pounds of King Crab, which should net them approximately $800,000. Before the crew shoves off, they decide they want to play a prank on the North American. The Wizard had been leasing the North American’s quota for the past two seasons. But now that he’s back fishing again, Captain Sten re-claimed his stake. They want the prank to be original, and before you know it they locate a port-o-potty and throw it in the back of Keith’s truck. After getting back to sea Keith finds one of Sten’s strings and puts his prank into action. They write on the side of the potty: “Sten, you’re so full of it we thought you could use this”. And they send it down. Later they get back to business. Two things haven’t changed this season: They’re pulling in great numbers and Greenhorn Moi is having his problems.

This was a solid episode. I really enjoyed being introduced to the North American and Sten. It was also good to see Captain Erik from season 2 again. I do have to say that Captain Phil and the Cornelia Marie was sorely missed. I always notice when a main character in any show is missing, and that includes Deadliest Catch. And Phil’s been with us since the beginning! I imagine that we’re halfway through the season now, and I’m already missing this show. At least I have Opilio season coming soon. If this could be a 20 episode show, I’m in. What about you?
