A guy rides up on a horse, and is mad at Richard for bringing Little Ben into the temple. “Is this Medieval Lost?” my roommate asked, and for a second I was hopeful, but no. Just…no. This episode showed so much promise in last week’s teaser trailer, but I was really underwhelmed. Richard says Jacob wanted him to save Ben, and the guy on the horse turns out to be Widmore. But where did he get the horse? Readers, help me out on this one.

A guy rides up on a horse, and is mad at Richard for bringing Little Ben into the temple. “Is this Medieval Lost?” my roommate asked, and for a second I was hopeful, but no. Just…no. This episode showed so much promise in last week’s teaser trailer, but I was really underwhelmed. Richard says Jacob wanted him to save Ben, and the guy on the horse turns out to be Widmore. But where did he get the horse? Readers, help me out on this one.
In the present, relatively speaking, Ben wakes up and sees Locke staring at him, looking all smug. Ben says he knew this would happen, and says he tried to get back to the main island to be judged by the monster. Ben goes to the beach wearing his man bag which you all know I love, and asks Ilena or whatever her name is if she needs any help. He then tells Cesar that he didn’t see Locke on the plane, and that Locke is “dangerously deranged.” In a flashback, presumably to the 80s considering Ben’s hair, Ben and little Ethan go to the beach and Ben steals Alex from Danielle. We find out why later.
Current Ben goes into the office (the island one, not Dunder Mifflin, though that would be too amazing for words) and takes a picture of himself and Alex. Turns out it was his old office. Locke comes in, and asks why Ben killed him. Ben says that it was the only way to get everyone to come back to the island, and Locke asks for an apology. Ben is silent, and Locke agrees to go to the main island so Ben can be judged. Cesar sees then trying to take a boat, so Ben shoots him with his own gun, throws the gun to Locke, and says “consider that my apology.” Ben, having reached new levels of awesome badassery, heads to the island with Locke.
Locke says he thinks Ben only wants to be judged for letting Alex die, and thus proves that he has the deductive reasoning skills of my hamster Lucy, who totally saw that one coming. In another flashback to Ben’s terrible 80s hair, Ben and Ethan bring the baby to Widmore and Alpert, and Widmore scolds him for not killing Danielle. Ben refuses to kill Alex, and I am still puzzled by his hair. What was up with that?
Locke asks Ben whose idea it was to move into the Dharmaville houses, and they see a light turn on in what used to be Alex’s room. Ben goes in to investigate, and finds Sun and Lapidus. Sun shows him the 1977 Dharma picture, with the Six in it. Sun says she met Christian, who told her to wait there for Locke, who would show her the way to Jin. Locke, of course, says he knows how to find Jin. Lapidus decides to leave. Ben goes into his super secret closet a la The Comedian (shout out to my fellow Watchmen fans) and goes behind the stone wall, drains a little pool, and says he’ll be outside. This is the semi-lame way to summon the smoke monster, I guess.
In another flashback, Ben’s hair is still awful, and he’s pushing young Alex on a swing. Alpert tells him that Widmore is leaving, and Ben goes to say goodbye. He says it’s Charles’s own fault, because he had a baby with an outsider. Charles tells him that the island wanted Alex dead, and that Ben will one day be banished too. In the present, Locke says he can lead Ben to the monster. We finally get to see why Ben was all beaten up back in LA, and it was because he shot Desmond and failed to kill Penny, and then was beaten up.
Locke and Ben go under the temple after Ben tells Sun to tell Desmond he’s sorry. Ben admits that Locke was right and he wants to be judged because of Alex. Ben falls through a hole, and the smoke monster shows him a lame montage of Alex. Then Alex comes out and tells him he has to follow Locke or she’ll kill him. Locke brings a vine to help Ben get out. Meanwhile, Ilana-whoever hits Frank and says she’s in charge. Good luck, newbie, you’re gonna need it.
I really thought Lost could have been so much better this week. I feel like the monster loses its desired effect when it’s shoved in our faces, and I don’t like Locke’s smug sense that he’s got it all under control. What did you all think? Actually, I thought all the Egyptian stuff was really awesome.
ReplyDeleteAnd the fact that the mural had a picture of the smoke god judging Anubis, the Egyptian god of the afterlife, was freaking CRAZY. Like, the smoke transcends the divine.
And, did you notice in the preview, that when Jack was in front of the chalk board something said "Egyptian".
I can't wait to unlock more of the ancient secrets and i STILL think the giant statue will be RICHARD in like Egyptian Pharaoh gear.
I think this episode just continued the awesomeness that is season 5. This is without a doubt the best season so far. This episode featured the two best characters so how you found it disappointing is beyond me. You know what episode was disappointing? The van episode in season 3!
