Hell’s Kitchen
“Day Nine”

Original Air Date: April 2, 2009

This week, the contestants have to prepare dishes and then decide together, which one dish will represent the whole team. Oh, yes, it’s full of conflict and controversy. Andrea’s dish is sent forward for the red team and Carol quickly expresses that if she leaves the piece of crab shell on the plate, Gordon will rip it apart. Andrea doesn’t listen to her and guess what? Gordon rips it apart. In fact, he hates the entire dish. On the blue side, Ben’s dish doesn’t fare much better so Gordon picks Paula and Danny to be the new representatives. Both dishes go over well but he can only pick one.

Danny wins it for his team and the men get to spend the day at Santa Monica beach, eating and riding on Segways and bikes. The red team is stuck at Hell’s Kitchen, cleaning the dorms and also, cooking and cleaning all the crabs for service.

When blue returns, Gordon tells everyone that each team is to design their own menus. It should be a great time for the teams but in classic Hell’s Kitchen fashion, it all goes wrong and quickly. Ben pitches pomme fondant repeatedly, as in, he says it more times than I think it’s ever been said in life. Robert thinks the menu is stuck up and I totally agree.

At service, a crazy, unbelievably miserable and rude woman sends back her beef carpaccio. When they redo it and serve it to her again, she actually takes the dish back to Gordon, which is never a good idea. What makes it worse is that she yells and whistles at Gordon, like he’s her gardener and she’s the worst employer ever. I don’t care who you are, that’s the most idiotic thing you could possibly do as a customer in Hell’s Kitchen. Gordon says he’s not a dog and insults her a bit but not as much as he could have.

Standouts on the Side of Good:

Robert – He’s really doing well, even if he does drag a bit on the meat station. Over the past few weeks, he’s really stood out as someone I think will win this. When he was dragging at service, Gordon yelled at him, “Don’t you dare give up!” which indicates to me that Gordon also sees the potential in Robert.

Standouts on the Side of Bad:

Carol – Oh, Carol’s potatoes. I bet she still has nightmares about those. She has so many problems cooking and preparing them, eventually messing them up beyond redemption, that Gordon yells about the potatoes to the customers, so they’re aware. Yikes. If the potatoes are that much of a risky timing issue, maybe it’s not the best thing to serve. There’s playing it safe and there’s taking risks but sometimes it’s just not worth it. She also messes up the meat, serving it raw.

Ben – After so much ado, Ben’s pomme fondant is not actually a pomme fondant. What a pomme fondant actually is, I don’t know but Gordon sure knows Ben has not made one. Gordon even asks Scott if pomme fondant means the same thing here as it does in Europe and Scott says it does. Now I’ve nearly rivaled Ben in the amount of times I’ve typed pomme fondant. Ben also cuts the filets wrong and passes them off to Robert. Gordon catches this and rips Ben a new one.

Who Wins, Who Is Nominated and Who Goes Home:

Gordon bases the winner this week on the customer comment cards. The blue team score a 39 percent above average and red manages 54 percent above average. It’s seriously a lucky break that the women won because I thought they totally tanked. Gordon chooses Danny to pick the nominee. Danny nominates Ben. Gordon tears into Ben’s filet mignon butchering and accuses him again of sabotage.

However, Gordon sends Carol home, saying that she sabotaged the most and gave up. While Danny was thinking about who he was going to nominate, Carol went on and on about how lucky she is but she really should have realized that Gordon has sent home quite a lot of people who hadn’t been nominated.

Well, at least we don’t have to watch Carol and Andrea duke it out anymore! So, what did you think? Was Gordon right in sending Carol home? Tell me your TwoCents in the comments!
