Top ten highlights from the E.R. series finale:
10. Dr. Benton's son Reese is grown up and doing fine. As many will recall, Reese was born prematurely and is deaf. Benton at first had difficulty dealing with the fact that his son was deaf and looked into surgery to restore his ability to hear.
9. Even in the sad final episode they find time for humor. A projectile vomiting patient, a penile fracture, a man using industrial caulk as Viagra. This has always been a staple of County General and it was nice to see they didn't forget it in the final episode.

8. Dr. Gates' 16 year old alcohol poisoning case. Based on Shelby Lyn Allen, the real life ex-neice of "E.R." executive producer John Wells who died from alcohol poisoning. Wells was so moved by the story that he wanted to include it in the series final episode.
7. Alexis Bledel as Dr. Julia Wise. It was very nice to see little Rory Gilmore all grown up and now she's a doctor. Lorelai must be so proud -- except about the changing her name to Julia and getting married to some guy named Wise.
6. A pregnant mother dies after giving birth to twins and causes a crisis of conscious for Dr. Wise. She doesn't know if she can really do the whole "doctor" thing and she gets advised that she should do her best every day, go home get some sleep and come back and do it again the next day. It's nice to see the show, even in it's final episode, carries on in it's tradition of bringing in new young doctors to be taught at County General -- it has, as always, been a teaching hospital.
5. Sam Taggert grows up on her birthday. Sam coming to her senses after the death of Ernest Borgnine's wife -- who he loved for 72 years and reaching for Dr. Tony Gates' hand was a very touching scene, she also called her estranged mother just to see how she was.
4. Dr. Morris gets awakened by the same nurse who woke Dr. Greene in the beginning of the series.
3. The opening of The Carter Center (named in honor of Carter's late son Joshua) brought back Dr. Susan Lewis (Sherry Stringfield), Dr. Kerry Weaver (Laura Innes), Dr. Elizabeth Corday (Alex Kingston) Dr. Peter Benton (Eriq La Salle) and Makemba 'Kem' Likasu (Thandie Newton). Kem's appearance was especially touching since she and Carter had become estranged themselves.
2. Dr. Benton and Dr. Carter embrace outside The Carter Center. It was a very touching moment, since Benton was at Carter's bedside all through his kidney transplant and probably saved his life during the surgery and once before when he put Carter on the plane for the rehab center. It's nice to know the former mentor and student are now friends.
1. Hallee Hirsh returns as Rachel Greene. Rachel is Dr. Mark Greene's daughter and now a 22 year old Duke student looking for a medical school. She's interviewed by Dr. Banfield for a possible job at County General bringing the series full circle. It was very touching to see her walking the halls where he dad worked years before.

- I loved the reaction of Frank when Rachel introduces herself. He just silently misses Mark Greene. It was phenomenal non-verbal acting.
- The very end when Carter says "Dr. Greene, are you coming?". WOW! Was like 15 years ago.
- The hour long "Previously on ER" was great! I had goosebumps almost the entire time.
- They used the original theme song. Including clips of the original openings. Even Benton's air punch which was ALWAYS my favorite part of the opening.
- The story of Ernest Borgnine and his wife. Was so touching. The looks of true love there. It shows how amazing this show really is at showing the human condition.
- I have to agree about the way it started with Morris being woken up the EXACT same shot and everything from how the Pilot started for Dr. Greene. Amazing.
It was such a perfect ending to this series — so good, you once again didn't want it to end. Putting Rachel back in the mix, getting Sam and Tony together, but not tying up the Carter and Kem story up neatly. It just flowed and made me sad for the hole now in my TV viewing. Oh heck, I'll be brave and say the hole left in my life!
