It seems that Jacob is quite impressive. Impressive enough to be at FBI Deputy Director Ray Wynne’s house, in a tux, getting ready to go out and give a speech. Or he was going to give a speech, until shots are fired from the upper floor of Wynne’s house, where his wife is. Holding her hostage is Sophia Lyons, a lab tech who used to work for Wynne until she was put in a state mental institution. She claims that Wynne stole her baby, that she was having an affair with him, got pregnant, and then he took the baby to hush her up, claiming that she actually lost it and it was the child of an ex-boyfriend who left her suddenly. Rachel manages to subdue Sophia before anyone gets hurt, and they send her back to the state institution. Not before she shows Jacob an implant that she supposedly pulled out of her arm that day.

ReplyDeleteAwhile later, Jacob and Rachel go to the institution to visit Sophia. She seems to be much better, and this time she’s left the implant in. It’s an experimental treatment that allows a steady dose of medication to enter a patient’s bloodstream. Of course, she seems fine, until she steals a doctor’s car keys and takes off.
Jacob’s been examining a hair from Sophia’s hairbrush to see about the drugs she’s been on at the institution, but what he learns is that this is the hair of someone who carried a baby to term, not someone who miscarried. When he and Rachel arrive at the hospital after Sophia escapes, the find a stash of meth in Sophia’s room. It looks like she’s been taking it to counteract the effects of the drugs she’s been on at the institution, in order to stay sane. They go to her old apartment and find all the ingredients needed to make a firebomb.
When they warn the Wynnes, the Wynnes decide to go to their vacation home. But Sophia was anticipating that. She blows up the house! Luckily no one is hurt. That is until Sophia shoots Rachel in the leg with an arrow and takes her hostage. Well, can’t win them all! Sophia calls Jacob and tells him to go to her apartment, that she’ll call him there. Jacob is starting to believe Sophia, and when he confronts Wynne he’s not well-received.
At Sophia’s apartment, Jacob receives a call from Sophia as well as verification that Rachel is alive and… sort of well. Sophia says all she wants is her baby back, so Jacob sets to work on that.
He teams up with Felix in an effort to track the baby down. It seems that Wynne has a condition that makes the whites of his eyes turn yellow. There’s a 50-50 chance that his and Sophia’s baby will have this Gilbert’s Syndrome. Felix does a search and finds a child about the right age that has recently been adopted and goes to find him.
Jacob contacts Sophia and tells her to meet him. When they meet up at an abandoned diner, along with Rachel, the baby is not there, but Felix sends Sophia a picture of the baby, showing her that he is alive and well. Jacob tries to reason with her, telling her that the baby is better off, at least at the moment, since Sophia isn’t well. Sophia doesn’t buy it and deserts Jacob and the rapidly fading Rachel. Luckily, Jacob wrangles a truck and takes Rachel into town to a hospital.
Sophia goes to visit her baby but only gets a moment with him before Felix turns up with the feds. She reluctantly leaves the baby behind, realizing he is better without her. Rachel is recovering nicely, and when Jacob gives her an out, telling her he’ll understand if she wants to be reassigned when she’s well, she turns him down. They share a touching moment as Rachel looks like she’s trying to hide a baby bump (already?).
It’s nice to have it reaffirmed in the season finale that Rachel and Jacob are a team, BFFs. However, I was a little disappointed about the un-sciencey nature of this episode. Sure, you have the drug implants, but what else was there? It seems like this was something that could have been solved by any agent. I feel like Jacob was under-utilized this episode. What do you all think?
