Oh, boy. We had quite the episode this week. Castiel, now constantly referred to as Cass, asks Dean to use his skills he learned in Hell and get Alastair to tell him what the plan is and how they’re killing angels. And here we go. Cass puts up a super badass devil’s trap to keep Alastair from escaping and Dean gets to work. I thought I’d have more of a problem seeing Dean torture Alastair but based on the fact that it’s Alastair, it didn’t really bother me. Also, it was pretty tame, a bit of holy water, some stabbing. The syringe of holy water was a nice touch. Alastair provokes Dean by mentioning how he tortured John in Hell and couldn’t break him.

Dean getting called to torture Alastair leaves Sam alone. With Ruby. Yeah. He tells her he needs to be strong and they start getting very touchy-flirty. The way the scene was going, I thought it was demon sex that made him strong. But no, demon blood. Immediately, I wished it had been demon sex.

Anna returns and confronts Cass on having Dean torture Alastair. She questions who’s giving the orders and if God would want Dean to do this or ask this of him. Cass tells her he’s nothing like Anna, reminding her again that she fell. She knows, dear.

And then the big bombshell drops. Alastair tells Dean breaking the first seal is when a “righteous man sheds blood in Hell.” He also says it was supposed to be John but he didn’t break. Dean turns his back but is visibly upset. Holy crap, poor Dean. As if he wasn’t feeling guilty enough about breaking, now he’s got the guilt of bringing on the apocalypse weighing on him.

All the while, there’s been a slow leak from a water pipe dripping conveniently on the devil’s trap. Fantastic. Alastair gets out and beats the crap out of Dean, who passes out. He then turns on Cass, trying to send him back up to Heaven (interesting skill there, Al) but Sam, high on demon blood, stops him. Sam takes over the interrogation and we find out Lilith and the demons are not behind the seal breaking and angel killing. Sam kills Alastair and like Lex on old school Smallville, passed out Dean sees nothing.

Cass tells Anna he’s started to “feel” and asks her to tell him what to do. She says it’s time he started thinking for himself and the leaky pipe conspiracy turns Cass into Matlock. Cass shares his leaky pipe issues with Uriel, who tells him “the only thing that can kill an angel is another angel.” Yikes. Uriel explains his big conversion plan to get angels on his side and raise Lucifer and if they don’t join him, he kills them. Wonderful. I’m really not pleased with the fact that Uriel, who has seemed shifty and up to no good this entire season is in fact, shifty and up to no good. That’s ridiculous. Uriel insists there’s no God and Anna shows up and stabs him dead. He gets the beautiful wingprint burned into the ground treatment.

Dean, in the hospital, asks Cass if what Alastair said was true and Cass confirms it, saying they tried to get to him before he broke but it was too late. Add another layer of guilt on to Dean, why don’t you? Cass tells Dean, “the righteous man who begins it is the only one who can finish it,” and tells Dean he has to stop it. Dean replies, “Lucifer? The apocalypse? What does that mean?” Cass tells him, “Our fate rests with you” and Dean replies, “Well, then you guys are screwed.” Actually, Dean, then we’re all screwed. Understandably, Dean gets upset and says the task is too big, which reminded me a lot of Dogma. Dean then says he’s “not the man either of our dads wanted us to be.” Officially, Dean Winchester needs a hug.

I’m seriously concerned. We’re definitely heading toward a major showdown and fast. I’m extremely angry at Sam. Considering everything John and Dean did to protect Sam and keep him alive, including Dean going to Hell, thus ruining Dean and apparently bringing on the apocalypse, it’s unforgivable. I don’t care how desperate you are or how important you think it is, drinking freaking demon blood is not okay. For a million different reasons, I wish John was around but I really wish he was here to tell Sam exactly how stupid he’s being. What did you think? I’d really love to hear your TwoCents on this episode.

  2. I would like to sign up for the "Save A Soul: Hug Dean" program. I'll take a 48-hour block to help him out. (I would be allowed to play with his hair though right?)

Was I the only one that groaned when the whole vampire/bite a demon crap came on? I mean really, I'm reaching my fill of vampire stuff lately. I have to save SOME room for Twilight on DVD - I can't have Supernatural taking up space in that realm too. Ugh.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let Dean have Anna back. She seemed to be the closest thing to an understanding shoulder that he's had since his dad died. Sam is off doing his own thing (that we all know will turn him evil - again, ugh) & Dean needs some love and support dang it. The fate of the world rests on his shoulders. At least give him a cute girlfriend to hug on.

Thank God Uriel's gone. He bugged me. And really - is Cass too stupid to look at the situation & realize that Lillith would have killed ALL of them - not just one at a time. Please. Demon Sister has bigger fish to fry than offing one angel at a time.

I'm really wondering how they are going to redeem Sam & Dean at this point. Sam is so far off the reservation & Dean is just lost. They have no one to drag them back ... Demon girlfriend & Anna can only do so much.

  3. Bella, we are going to have to devote much time to the "Save a Soul: Hug Dean" program. Of course you get to play with his hair. It says so, right on the mission statement.

Not only are you not the only one that groaned during the whole bite scene but I had to pause the TV for a minute to keep my head from exploding. I'm all full up on vampire stuff. I can't take anymore, not even from Supernatural.

COMPLETELY agree about Uriel, Cass and especially Anna. I love Anna and I think she and Dean are great together.

As far as redeeming the dear old Winchesters, Dean will come back eventually but I don't see how Sam can. We've just got to hope for the best because it's hard to watch them spiral downward so much.

  4. I talked to Hubs about the Bite A Demon storyline & he says that this really is a "thing" associated with demons. Supposedly drinking their blood would give you great powers ... if you believe that they embody physical forms and have blood, then I guess you could do that. I never thought of them having a physical form, but I don't think angels do either. For what that's worth.

  5. Sam only started up with the demon blood again after "Criss Angel" when he realised Dean is resigned to defeat, an early death, and (presumably) an eternity of torment in Hell. Not only does the demon blood seem to be addictive in its own right, but every time Sam's powers save the day it reinforces his belief that he's made the right choice, despite the reservations expressed by the angels,Pamela and Dean. (And I'm pretty sure if Bobby knew what was going on Sam would get whupped upside the head.)

Dean's prescient warning in "No Rest for the Wicked" about the paving on the road to Hell (boy, does he know his little brother) was subsumed in Sam's grief, but as long as Dean's alive (maybe even longer) he'll never give up trying to save Sam ("If it's the last thing I do I'm gonna save you", BUABS). So I'm basically optimistic about the long run, painful as it is to watch them right now. Hugs all around.

  6. Bella - Ooh, thanks for the info! I'm glad to hear it looks like the writers have done their homework on that one.

grand-sophy - You bring up many excellent points and your optimism gives me hope. Thank you for that. It's going to be a long road but we'll get there when we get there, right? I do believe in Dean and his ability to keep fighting and never give up, I do, I do.
