Alexis Grace had dreams of going on the American Idol Summer Tour and she missed it by just one spot. She and Megan (cough) Joy had even talked about their kids becoming friends while touring together.
But instead, she was eliminated after Country Week.
“I never imagined that I’d go home this early,” she said exactly 12 hours after being eliminated. “I thought I would last a little longer. I would have loved to go on tour, especially with those guys.”

For a moment, it looked as if she would have another chance at being in the Top 10. The judges implied, when it came down to her and Michael Sarver, they might use the new Judge’s Save rule to keep her. And when she sang Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” for a second time, it was obvious she was trying to put the “edge” into it that they had asked of her from the beginning.
I asked her why they had wanted her to “dirty it up” from the beginning when no one else had been asked to do this, especially sweet and innocent Jasmine Murray.
“I think they asked me to do that because they saw something in me in the beginning that was edgy that I hadn’t touched on yet,” she said. “They wanted me to become the best artist possible.”
She thinks it was too early for the judges to use their one-and-only save. As it was too early and “not good TV.” She admitted that if she’d been allowed to do a song other than “Jolene” on elimination night, she would have had a better chance.
“I would have done better with ‘Never Love a Man’ [which got her in the Top 12],” she said with a yawn. “It would have showcased my voice more and I might still be there. It would have reminded them and America why they picked me.”
Alexis said she knew she’d be in the bottom three because of the judges’ negative comments after her performance. This provided “a little bit of a reality check.” She also questions her song choice, despite her strong affection for Parton.
“I had considered a Carrie Underwood song [for Country Week], but two other singers were doing her [songs] and I thought three was too much for one night,” she said, mentioning that she grew up hearing country in Memphis. “I feel like I let my state down. Hopefully I will be able to redeem myself.”
She plans on keeping the edgy look, although she may change the pink stripe in her hair.
“The edgy look is what got me here — that and my singing,” she said. “I want to get to work recording music and get it out there. I want to be in this business as long as I can.”
