Two episodes left, and it’s all starting to come together. At this point last season, the picture may have been clearer, but the interest is still building for this season’s finale. Sometimes it’s obvious that the writers have been working very hard not to be formulaic, but since it’s TV, viewers almost want to fall into the same traps. Thankfully, the creators keep moving things in new directions.

Two episodes left, and it’s all starting to come together. At this point last season, the picture may have been clearer, but the interest is still building for this season’s finale. Sometimes it’s obvious that the writers have been working very hard not to be formulaic, but since it’s TV, viewers almost want to fall into the same traps. Thankfully, the creators keep moving things in new directions.
For example, when Patty shuts down the Frobisher investigation, Ellen gets her own PI named Wilcox. He finds that the security firm they have been looking into has a broader, more shadowy reach (and we find out that Messer isn’t the one in charge after all). His investigation also turns up Phil’s infidelity to Patty. This happens as they’re being profiled by New York Magazine as the hot power couple. As Tom, Ellen and Patty gloss over the duplicity and backstabbing, Ellen find a surreptitious way to get the photos to Patty, watching her open the envelope. Patty counters by leaking them to the press, derailing Phil’s bid for a cabinet post. She’s aware that Ellen is the source, but she’s more upset that Phil allowed himself to get caught.
Throughout the episode, we see more and more examples of Patty and Ellen being two sides of the same coin. All that makes you wonder if they’re working together to set up Agent Werner. At the end of the episode, we see him arresting Ellen, but we don’t hear the charge. Plus, Ellen doesn’t buy his story about Harrison’s death. Even when Patty advises Ellen to “Let things roll off your back”, Ellen’s way of restraining herself echoes the times we’ve seen Patty hold back. The promos described this cast as the best on television. It gets tougher every week to disprove that claim.
Meanwhile, Claire Maddux makes a play for Kendrick’s seat of power, promising to put Purcell in charge of the environmental cleanup. But when she arrives for the board meeting to oust Kendrick, she finds that the board has already voted to remove her instead. Kendrick has leaked her relationship with Purcell, and she is caught by her own policy. With nowhere else to turn, she heads to Patty’s office, telling Patty that she’s the only one who can take down Kendrick.
Patty’s PI steals the Cadillac from under the nose of Kendrick’s agent. When they examine the car, they notice that the mileage is low, but the activity on the GPS system is high. They start to put two and two together.
