After being interrupted by the writers’ strike last year, the “Deeply Superficial” series makes a strong return with an episode dealing with breast cancer, disfigured earlobes, and the glories of wheelchair sex. Nice mix of humor, pathos and creepiness.

ReplyDeleteThe last time we were in the LA office of McNamara/Troy, Dr. Sean McNamara was literally stabbed in the back by his talent agent, who had been accumulating more teddy bears than clients. His daughter Annie was under anesthesia at the time. The episode takes us back a few minutes to see how Colleen Rose managed to infiltrate the office. Christian manages to find Sean, after he has turned the knife on Colleen. From there, we move forward in time to see Sean in a wheelchair, devoting more time to teaching.
The story shifts to an interesting twist when Christian examines Liz before her breast reduction surgery. He accompanies her to have a lump examined. In the course of a discussion, he tells Liz that he has a lump himself, and after a mammogram, it is determined he has stage 2 breast cancer. Reminded that this took the life of actor Richard (Shaft) Roundtree, Christian starts to put his affairs in order. It’s a well thought out angle bringing attention to something men trivialize, thinking it’s not their problem.
Matt plans to reenter college for pre-med, and Ronnie Chase needs his earlobes rebuilt after being thrown out of a band and abandoning his incredibly intricate ear studs. But those are minor sidetracks before the well-arranged finale, as Sean and Christian wake at the same time in different places, walk to their respective mirrors and examine their scars. It’s a nice non-verbal moment. Those are becoming an FX trend. Thanks for reminding me that The Shield wasn’t the only show that did that.
Best moment: Christian deflates a sexual encounter by turning a grope of his partner a breast exam.

I think the best moment was when Christian was lambasting Matt during Matt's visit with Sean.
