The new target is a former football player with a gambling problem who kills off people to pay off his debts – undoubtedly not connecting the dots and realizing that the best way to avoid getting debts in the first place is to not gamble. But alas, his murder does provide for an hour of sociopathic television entertainment as we watch how Dexter considers whether to let Miguel deep into his soul. Before Dexter can make up his mind, he gives Miguel a serious schooling – teaching him the fine art of stalking the prey, collecting the evidence, being incognito, how to set up the kill room, etc. Even though Harry pops up – like he does every now and then in Dexter’s daydreams – warning his son against teaching someone how to kill, Dexter ignores him. It’s his life, and dammit, he’ll do want he wants! He’s still sticking it to his dead father for killing himself. Miguel passes the test – he gets to kill Billy Fleeter.
In case you didn’t infer from last weeks episode – Deb and Anton didn’t just kiss each other. They have adult sleepovers, complete with cold showers and cereal, and finding out things about the person that you’re sleeping with that you didn’t want to know about (nothing too serious, Deb just finds some weed stashed in a cereal box). It’s cute though, I’m seriously hoping that this relationship (a) lasts, (b) is healthy (c) doesn’t involve one member of the party being involved in a killing spree. But perhaps I’m asking for too much. Deb found out from Quinn that Anton was never an officially paid police informant, and thus is free from his duties of having to help Deb with anything having to do with tracking down The Skinner. She also finds out the truth about the accusations that Yuki made about Quinn. Yes, a cop did die because of him. His old colleague had a Crystal Meth problem and he didn’t out the guy when he had the chance.
Anton seems to be ok with being let off the hook. Deb and him make plans for breakfast the next day. But Anton never shows up. Anton doesn’t return any of Deb’s phone calls. Much like Deb, I’ve decided to immediately assume the worst – my lover was sleeping with me because it was beneficial to the situation and not because there was ever an actual interest. Her fears are proven true when she asks Dexter for advice on a hypothetical situation involving her (non)hypothetical self and Anton, to which Dexter responds that yes – it would make sense to stop having (hypothetical) sex once it no longer serves a purpose. Oh Deb, when will you learn that your dear older brother knows absolutely nothing about interaction among the human race?
I’m surprised Dexter hasn’t snapped and just killed Rita. I’m serious. Now, usually I love me some Dexter and Rita, but a pregnant, hormonal Rita is no one’s friend. No One. Stay. Away. She’s mad she didn’t get an engagement ring, even though she didn’t want one. She asks Dexter about what food should be served at the wedding, he recommends some steak, she doesn’t like him giving his opinion. Luckily, the problem is resolved by presenting her with an official engagement ring. Rita lives to see another day.
Everyone is trying to figure out his or her relationship in this episode. Dexter is trying to figure out whether he should let Miguel in, Rita is mad at Dexter for being unhelpful, Deb is stressing why Anton won’t return her phone calls. Angel is trying really hard not to eff things up with Detective Gianna (first name Barbara). They’ve officially gone public via a big goodbye kiss in the elevator, and now Angel is watching his every move. In an adorably vulnerable moment he leaves a message for his lady-love explaining that he won’t be able to make their dinner date (he’s got a lot of paperwork to do as Sergeant). The message is incredibly dorky and awkward. Barbara loves it, and shows up late in the night with some take out for the two of them.
Deb has followed the money. All landscaping contractors are called into the Homicide department for questioning, including George Washington King – a tree trimmer that was questioned at a previous murder scene. He is very helpful. He lets them know that one his employers, Mario, has a serious temper problem. So Deb and Quinn pick up Mario and interrogate him. The guy is very standoffish, and begs to not be deported back to Nicaragua. They mention King said he has a temper. Mario freaks out at the mention of his boss and immediately begs to be deported – screw the family he would leave behind. KING SCARES HIM. Looks like we know who The Skinner is. And we’ve got a pretty good idea of who his new target is – Anton recently had his trees trimmed, and he’s disappeared.
After killing Billy Fleeter, Miguel does not follow Dexter’s advice. Instead of going home to his wife to cover his tracks, Miguel shows up at Ellen Wolf’s office. She lets him in, and closes the door behind the two of them. There are only two things that can come of this. Angry Sex, or Violent Murder.
I don’t know about you, but Miguel is scaring me. At first it was nice to know that Dexter had a friend that would really get him, but the guy is just not well adjusted. Dexter needs to get Miguel to chill. Even Rudy was less scary than Miguel – and Rudy was crazy. On a separate note, Deb may not be my favorite character on this show, but she always gets the short end of the stick. If Anton is the latest target of the Skinner, let him not die – the girl needs a stable relationship.
