So we've all heard that this is ER's final year. Many of our favorite characters have come and gone over the years, but I could not have predicted who we lost in this final season premiere.

The previews have warned that one of our favorites would take their final breath. At the end of last season, Abby was walking by as an ambulance, that contained either Sam or Pratt, exploded. Watching the previews, I wondered if it would be Abby or if it would be Sam. For some reason it just didn't occur to me that it would be Pratt.

When the show started, we were back at the scene of the explosion. We learn that Pratt went in the ambulance instead of Sam. Abby gets over to the ambulance and finds Pratt who is shaken and battered but conscious and mobile. They begin tending to some of the other injured and help arrives from the hospital. As they are working, Pratt starts showing signs of injury such as a bone sticking out of his leg. Nope, his leg isn't broken, it's a piece of someone else that became shrapnel... now isn't that a picture you wanted? He also starts coughing up blood. They immediately strap him down and take him to the ER, with him, of course, telling them the entire time that he's fine and they need to get back to work.

Over the next while, Pratt gets better, he gets worse, then he gets better, and then he crashes. Despite the best efforts of everyone there, he lapses into a coma and upon testing, they confirm that he's brain dead. Pratt's brother agrees to organ donation as that was what Greg had wanted. They wheel Pratt through the ER to the elevator one last time to head up to the OR.

After the funeral, which thankfully they didn't show as this episode was definitely sad enough as it was, they all return to the ER. Ansbaugh has called down and let his nephew, Dr Brenner, know that Pratt was going to be the new Chief of the ER. Archie brings Tina, Pratt's girlfriend, over so she can tell everyone how much Pratt loved them and loved working there. Archie takes Tina aside, and after apologizing for the bad timing, gives her the engagement ring that Pratt had on him the day he died. After work, everyone meets over at Ike's to remember Pratt. They tell stories of their time with him and toast their Chief.

I don't know about you but this was one of the sadder ER episodes I can recall. I don't think any episode can compete with when we lost Mark Greene, but it was still pretty difficult. I have to say I have mixed feelings about this season. I love the show and will definitely continue to watch it but oh man, I think this season is going to be rough. If this season premiere is anything to go by, we had better have a box of Kleenex handy every Thursday.

So now we're down another doctor. Luka is MIA. Abby is talking about leaving with Luka. Pratt is gone. Neela is in surgery now. We're down to Gates and Archie as full time ER docs. So they say that Carter will be making an appearance sometime this season. How long will he stay? They're bringing in Angela Bassett as another doctor. Shoot, there are so many rumors flying about this season, we don't know what to expect each week. Is that a good thing? Will they manage to make this season as gripping as some of the earlier ones? Are any more of our doctors going to get killed off? Who else will be coming back from the past to visit the ER in this final season?
