The Opie season is winding down for the fleet, but the ice is ramping up on the vessels. Fishing on the Bering Sea is hard enough isn’t it?

The Wizard –

After a bad string, Captain Keith has pulled up stakes and started fishing elsewhere. And it has paid off greatly with some good numbers. Greenhorn Cooper is toiling away trying to impress his crewmates and tells us that this job is not for the weak hearted. Later they have to start breaking away the heavy ice pack. Monte admits that this is the worst part of their job. Cooper doesn’t seem to mind, though. He tells us that he thinks it’s fun. Deckhand Lynn thinks he might be crazy. The tanks are filling quickly and they’re getting close to filling their quota. Greenhorn Lynn is starting to pick on Cooper. This may be because Cooper is doing so well and he’s concerned about how he looks to the crew now. Keith acknowledges that the two men are battling, but tells us that if fists start flying then bags will start packing. He has no tolerance for fighting on the Wizard.

    The Northwestern –

Captain Sig is still trying to race the incoming ice pack coming in from the Arctic from last episode. The crew is exhausted after working through the night. And they’ll be working for another 18 hours straight before they’ll get their 3 hour nap. After 36 hours they rescue all of their gear from the ice pack. But Sig doesn’t allow anyone to nap until they break away all of the ice that has compounded on the deck. The ice makes vessels top heavy and that could be very dangerous and risk sinking the boat. When pulling up the next string of pots, one of the bridles snap and deckhand Nick jumps out of the way in time before getting his foot caught in the line! Edgar saves the line so they could recover the pot.

    The Cornelia Marie –

Relief Captain Murray is still running the Cornelia Marie with it’s Captain Phil Harris still in the hospital. He has recruited friend and deckhand Mark to go back to run the hydraulics. It’s been a long time and it shows when he mishandles a pot and it almost comes slamming into the crew. They are gaining on the Wizard for the crab count king.

    The North American –

Captain Sten is getting ready to haul in what may be the last string of the season. They only need 20,000 more pounds to fill their quota. Each pot coming in is 700 pounds on average. Greenhorn Darrell is still trying to keep up. Later they head back to port for their final offload. Sten holds a crew meeting to decide the fate of Darrell, and they unanimously vote that he didn’t cut it for another run. Sten tells Darrell that he won’t be returning, and Darrell takes it well. He tells us that he has learned from his experience of crab fishing.

    The Time Bandit –

Captain Andy is cruising through 30’ seas. They just worked through a long shift of fishing that only provided non-keepers and they have a long way to go. They start pulling pots and show a 320 average take. That is good but it won’t help them meet their 190 thousand pounds of Opilio crab. At one point a line goes around deckhand Shea’s neck after dropping a pot but he quickly reacts and tosses it over the side. This could have snapped his neck or pulled him down into the sea. Even though the crew has worked 48 hours straight, they’ll have to work another 48 hours just to meet their quota. Scott Hillstrand sneaks inside for a quick break and gets some guff from the crew.

I am always astonished to see what these guys go through. Watching the ice form each season is really something to see. You can’t imagine that someone works in that environment. I have trouble working after I eat a fudgicle! What are your thoughts? Good episode? Did you feel cold in your seat like I did? Do you get brain freeze with those darn fudgicles like I do?
