We’re 4 weeks into Opie season now and the crew is dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane from the night before. And we sit side by side with a captain and his battle to fight an injury and it’s affecting his health. Is nothing easy on the Bering Sea?
The Northwestern
Edgar and the crew are going around the deck seeing what damage that the storm caused. They notice that they’ve lost some deck boards and even a 1000 pound pot had moved. Captain Sig tells us that they rolled at almost 90 degrees at one point. Everything inside that wasn’t attached is now on the floor.

The North American
Captain Sten goes out on deck, or, what is left of it. The steel plating on deck is cracked and a lot of the boards have come up. They determine that they have approximately $5000 in damages.
The Early Dawn
Captain Rick is having the crew go through the damage on deck. The coiler had even gotten pulled from it’s anchoring. They have to fix the deck up quickly because another Arctic squall is on it’s way. They get ready just in time.
The Cornelia Marie
It seems that Captain Phil has suffered more damage than his vessel. As he was getting out of bed during the storm, he was throttled against some furniture in his quarters and he believes he’s cracked a few ribs. He tries to lie down and has trouble breathing. Later, Phil has Josh wrap up his ribs & he gets back in the wheelhouse. With the deadline coming up, Phil knows he has to work through the pain. He coughs up in a paper towel and noticed blood is on the towel. Phil calls Murray to tell him what’s happening. Murray helps wrap his ribs up tighter. After 24 hours of suffering through the pain, he decides to call the hospital. They tell Phil he needs to get to an emergency room asap. He ignores the advice of the nurse. Murray tries to talk Phil into getting help to no avail. Murray then decides to disobey Phil’s order and tell his sons about his injury. Josh confronts his dad and challenges him to go home. Later Phil calls Captain Keith of the Wizard and even he tells him to call the coast guard if necessary. Finally, Phil concedes and heads back for help. He has to circle St Paul Island because of the weather, and each Captain of the fleet calls in to check on their friend. He makes it to the hospital, but it looks like we won’t find out the diagnoses until next week.
The Wizard
Captain Keith is seeing nice numbers coming in. But he’s very unhappy at the performance of Moi, one of his greenhorns. Keith feels that Moi has been underachieving since he’s been on board. It didn’t help when he challenged him in the wheelhouse a couple of episodes back. Keith calls his brother Monte up to go through resumes for a possible replacement. Keith makes some calls and finds Moi’s replacement. They will meet him at the offload for the next run.
The Time Bandit
The Time Bandit has pulled into it’s first offload of Opies. They have hauled 220 grand worth of crab. Captain Jonathan tells his brother Neal that even though he will remain the engineer of the vessel, he will no longer be required to work out on the deck. Each Hillstrand brother is now over 40 and after Jonathan’s accident he doesn’t want to see any of his brothers toil over the harsh work on deck any longer. He feels it’s a young man’s job.
This was arguably the best episode of the season I think. The drama involved with Phil’s injury was thicker than any of the storms or fishing woes they’ve had. We watched Phil suffer through 60 hours of pain and only concedes knowing that each and every person he speaks to pleads with him to get help. It was touching and scary all at once. We will find out the answer next week. (Now THAT’S a cliffhanger). Is this your favorite episode too? If not, what has been your favorite so far? If you believe that I’m fishing for your two cents, you’d be correct.
