Thus opens the pilot episode of Dawson's Creek, with Joey quoting E.T. on best friend Dawson's bed, where she's spent 8 years of Saturday nights. But this Saturday night is different. They start high school on Monday, and she has breasts! and Dawson has genitalia! and she just can't sleep over anymore. Dawson insists that they've transcended such things - their relationship is purely platonic - so Joey stays.

The familiar strains of Paula Cole! The first Pacey and Joey fight! The first Dawson Leery homemade movie! And then, enter Jennifer Lindley, New York city femme fatale. Joey is instantly jealous.

Soon enough, we get our other lifestyle introductions. We meet Joey's pregnant sister Bessie and baby daddy Bodie - Mom's dead, Dad's in prison for drug trafficking. Dawson and Pacey work at the local video store, where Pacey meets Tamara. Turns out, of course, that he's actually hot for teacher when she shows up in front of his English class later. Dawson's bedroom is floor to ceiling Spielberg, except for the window Joey climbs into from her ladder. And Jen lives with her church-going grandmother (Grams), the only former nurse who can't use the technical term for male genitals.

The four kids make an anxiety-inducing trip to see Waiting for Guffman, all with different agendas. Jen's here for friends, Dawson's here for Jen, Joey's here to get Jen away from Dawson, and Pacey's stalking Tamara. Dawson doesn't get his goodnight kiss, but Pacey and Tamara's more than suffices for pilot episode romantic drama.

The episode ends with Dawson acknowledging a point Joey had made about how his life is perfect, and he's trying to create drama unnecessarily. They discuss her jealousy ("It's not like I wanted to be the one holding your hand, I just didn't want her holding it."), and Joey uses the phrase "walk your dog", which probably spurred an inordinate amount of conversation among the teen crowd the next day. As she rows away, too old to sleep over, Dawson tells her exactly when (and with what inspiration) he "walks his dog", proving they can talk about anything. Of course, that's until Joey sees Dawson's mom kiss her co-anchor. This one, they might not be able to talk about.

So what do you think? Love Pacey and Tamara, or too controversial? Forget how innocent Jen seemed in the beginning? Leave your Two Cents in the comments!

  2. AAWW Yes, Jen Lindley used to be such a nice, sweet girl. And I like when Katie Holmes wasn't zombie wife, those were the days.
