Summer Review Intro

This Summer, I dedicate myself to work out more, have more cookouts, go to the beach more than once, and drool over the teenage Johnny Depp. In fact, I think that the very top of that list will be drool over Johnny Depp – I’m gonna be pulling out my collection of 21 Jump Street DVDs (and hopefully work to get more money to buy the ones I don’t already have).

The first episode we’ll begin with is the Pilot Episode.

21 Jump Street existed even before I was even born, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t appreciate it’s lovely 80s aesthetic – come to think of it, I think the kids at my school are wearing many of the same outfits. 21 Jump Street centers around a group of young looking police officers that are placed in a special undercover unit where they infiltrate high schools to bust drug dealers, rapists, gay bashers, and gangs. It was actually a pretty progressive show for it’s time, dealing with taboo topics such as HIV/AIDS – at a time when the disease just became known and still had a large stigmatism attached to it.

Depp plays Officer Tom Hanson, a rowdy young police officer, brought into the profession after being inspired by his father, an officer who was shot in the line of duty.
Holly Robinson Peete is Officer Judy Hoffs, the mandatory sexy and spunky female police officer – she’s pretty bad-ass.
Dustin Nyugen, was possibly the very first mainstream Asian teen heartthrob (that’s saying a lot since there haven’t really been that many). He plays Officer Harry Truman Ioki, the funny and kind-hearted of the bunch, who harbors a secret that could put his entire career in jeapordy.
And finally, Peter DeLuise plays Officer Doug Penhall. He seems like the guy that would have picked on you in high school and grade school, he’s so tough-looking. But, then he babysits for his neighbor’s kids, and well, you realize that he’s just a big ol’ sap.

So even though it’s slightly campy, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying Johnny Depp back when he appeared in Jump and Tiger Beat magazine – as well as seeing the early work of other really big movie and television stars.

So lets Jump, down on Jump Street.
