“The only person playing by the rules is you,” Satan tells Sam. And so it’s true, when you have Greg trying to steal Andi out of her relationship, Ben seeing another woman, Sara holding Ben to marital double standards, and the Devil… Well, does he ever play fair? Here we have a tale of temptation – how far is our Reaper willing to go to get his girlfriend back and set things right?
When a chainsaw monster straight out of a slasher flick comes after Sam, he freaks out and wonders why he hasn’t gotten a vessel yet. There’s no word about an escaped soul hacking people, his satanic employer says. There are no chainsaw guys in Gladys’s soul inventory either, though it quite amusingly lists a mug shot of one Abraham Lincoln. After striking a deal with the DMV demon to take care of her pet cat (Sock: Okay, now by cat, do you mean cat or some kind of dragon?), she refers Sam and Sock to a vessel bootlegger called Dennis. Careful with your Nerf guns, kiddies. One hit, and they can suck anything down to hell.
Because scrambling for Sam’s life isn’t enough trouble in one serving, Andi’s douchebag ex-boyfriend Greg’s back. He wants to make Andi his, and…it’s working? She’s suddenly so smitten with the guy that she breaks up with Sam. Sam senses foul play in this game, and who other than your friendly neighborhood Devil would be behind it? Turns out Greg sold his soul for the power of romantic persuasion, and he’s been screwing with her head to make her think she loves him. Remember the chainsaw guy that’s been chasing Sam around? It’s Greg’s pent-up frustration and rage manifested into a homicidal hacker with a jealous streak. Satan sees only one way for Sam to get out of this predicament: kill Greg. (Devil: Now say that again. *changes voice* Only this time use a Russian accent.) He gets the schmuck’s soul, Sam gets his girl, and nobody gets body parts sawed off. Sam won’t hear it. He’s not going to stoop down to murder to fix his problems. Devil says there’s always a catch when you deal with him. Andi might be mind tricked into falling for Greg, but her feelings for Sam are still there, right? Now if could only make her realize it before the chainsaw guy dices them into pieces…
The honeymoon’s over for Ben, not like the arrangement promised him any more than 1600 bucks in his pocket. Sara’s taking full advantage of their Green Card marriage and claiming they’re pregnant. Thing is, the kid’s not his. Even though Sara won’t let Ben date his newfound love Cassidy, Sara’s still involved with Esteban, her Cirque du Soleil trapeze catcher boyfriend of four years. It’s their kid she’s forcing Ben to take responsibility for, and even though he thinks her double standards are unfair he’s too afraid to give her a piece of his mind. As perfect as Cassidy is (and as enthralled by their elicit affair she’s become), he has to break it off with her.
When the description of this episode came out, I wasn’t particularly looking forward to having Andi’s ex back into the picture. This episode was a surprising lot of fun, though. It served plenty of comedy through the Devil’s reveling in his clever involvement in Sam’s predicament and Ben’s marital craziness. One of the best Devil scenes was him jovially prancing up to Sam swinging around the knife and whistling like brandishing sharp objects in public is completely normal, only to disappear on Sam when they walked in on Andi and Greg making out. The Devil was clearly having too much fun watching Sam figure out what was going on and tempting him into killing Greg. That’s our Devil, getting dark-humored kicks out of his souls. I can’t help but cheer every time Sam wises up to Satan. It’s such fun to see them go at it on a more level playing field, and it shows a lot of growth and confidence in our Reaper. Nice to see the “Get out of hell free” card come to use. Almost forgot he had it. One thing, though. I knew they wouldn’t go through with it, but the boys getting their hands on a shotgun to off Greg? Kind of scared me. I didn’t think Sam would be tempted to go that deep into giving in to the Devil, but it’s a reminder of the kind of dark forces he’s dealing with and how he’ll have to keep fighting them off.
Greg turned out to be a self-pitying tool. Although, when you hit on your stepmother…yeah, might be some problems there. Some part of me felt bad for him. We all make our stupid mistakes and sometimes it’s hard not to beat yourself up over them. Loved the scene where Greg was begging his inner chainsaw guy to come at him and Ben shook some sense into him. Tried to at least, but he came out of that near-death experience with the courage to stand up to Sara with Cassidy by his side. Ted coming in during their chat and offering to make their supposed love triangle into a square? Disgustingly brilliant comedic moment right there.
I’m glad Ben is finally getting some proper character development recently, but I was hoping we’d see Andi having a more active role in the series now that she knows Sam’s a Reaper. She acted kind of cute, though. Best Andi line ever (No, it's not "Sam and I are just friends."): Andi: So what kind of soul did you use on the bug lady? Sam: Uh, defective toaster. Andi: ...That is so hot. So far she’s pretty much been the Work Bench princess pining for her prince, and then we get her going gaga over her ex? We know and Sam sure knows after last week’s episode that she’s got some awesome moves. Time to put them into good use and help our boys kick escaped soul butt.
Great overall episode, despite my initial qualms. Tell us what you guys think about it. Who would you use your “Get out of hell free” card on if you were in Sam’s shoes? What sort of thing would be your inner raging chainsaw guy? Are Gladys and Dennis getting it on? Did anybody find Sam beating up his locker over the Greg thing and Ben screaming at Greg to calm his ass down as hot as I did? (Yes, shameless fangirl here.) Give us your two cents. If we get enough change, we can pay your bail out of hell if you've been a bad boy or girl.
nice blog yes he will get back his girlfriend
ReplyDeleteI just stumbled onto this website. Good recap! I'll be coming back to read more in the future.
ReplyDeleteAs far as "Reaper" goes, great show... one of the best new shows this season. This show has really come to life and gotten so good following the writers strike. I hope CW will make the right decision and bring this one back!
I love this show! Unfortunately, I have heard that it is on the CW's chopping block and will be dropped after this season. I hope that the Studio moguls can see the error of their ways before it is too late for this awesome show...
ReplyDeletePerhaps we can initiate a petition to save the show... Hopefully they will not drop this series, as it is one of the more interesting shows gracing the tube these days.
ReplyDeleteThere is a petition to keep this show on the air already. http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/KeepReaper/
