"Hell's Kitchen" Recap & Review - "Day 6"

Hell’s Kitchen
“Day 6”

This week on Hell’s Kitchen, a very special sweet sixteen party rolls in and the teams have a teenager’s picky palate and her high maintenance mother to contend with as well as Gordon Ramsay. I think it’s got to be the first sweet sixteen televised where the birthday girl or boy did not get a super expensive car at the end. Now that’s a shocker.

The first challenge starts with Gordon telling the chefs that each team is to come up with one appetizer and two entrees and they are given one hundred dollars and twenty-five minutes in the Farmer’s Market to get the ingredients. The women work together well and come up with a plan to have a theme of glamour. They design each dish after a city and all are in agreement with the plan. On the men’s side, it’s business as usual with Ben, Bobby and Louross making all of the decisions and not listening to Matt. The women come up with shrimp scampi as their appetizer and halibut with rice and grilled flank steak as their entrees. The men choose stuffed chicken wings as their appetizer and sweet potato with asparagus and shrimp and filet minion as their entrees.

Both teams are a bit floored when birthday girl Melissa and her mom come out as judges but what did they really expect? The women are shocked that Melissa’s never had shrimp before and the men take a hit when she also says she doesn’t like asparagus. Melissa chooses the men’s stuffed chicken wings, the women’s halibut with rice and she’s about to choose the women’s grilled flank steak but her mother steps in and has her pick the filet minion. Jen is angry that they almost won and that Melissa would have chosen their dish if not for her mother.

The men finally win reward and get to go go-karting. The women have to decorate Hell’s Kitchen for the party with Francisco, the high strung party planner. Honestly, I couldn’t figure out what they were complaining about. Usually the losing team spends the entire day doing prep for dinner and in Ben’s case, they sometimes have to shovel horse crap. Yeah, I’ll spend the day figuring out how to properly put out napkins and plates with Francisco, who says “sparkilious” way too much if that saves me from cutting up food for six hours. Point me to the glitter. Give me the seat covers. Where do you want the candles?

When they finally do get to prep the food for service, Shayna’s mango salsa for the halibut becomes a bit of a problem. Ben doesn’t care about preparing it properly, which Shayna takes issue to since it’s her recipe. You think she has a point, you really do, until you find out she’s spent hours preparing the salsa. See, even when I feel like Shayna has a point and makes sense, it doesn’t last long. Service itself goes as service usually goes. There’s raw(ish) food, there’s total incompetence, ridiculous slowness and Gordon yelling.

Biggest Screw Ups of the Night:
Rosann – she was supposed to cook Melissa’s filet minion medium well and it comes out much more rare. I wouldn’t say it was raw but it definitely wasn’t cooked according to the order. After trying again and having it be too rare yet again, Gordon pushes Rosann off the station and cooks the steak himself.
Matt – he was in charge of cooking Melissa’s mother’s halibut, which ended up being dry. He attempts to cook it again but Bobby moves in, takes over his station and cooks it himself. Gordon tells Matt he does “a good job of hiding.”
Shayna – she does everything far too slowly in the kitchen. Gordon gives her a pass again and barely scolds her at all. He doesn’t ever yell at her or even raise his voice. What makes her so special?

Both teams finish and Gordon reads the results of the customer comment cards, which rates whether or not they would come back. The men have a rating of 98% and the women pull a 99% so Gordon declares that there’s no losing team. Each team must pick a nominee for elimination.

    Who Should Be Nominated:
Matt – he drives me crazy. I know his team has shut him out but he doesn’t seem to have leadership material and that’s what Gordon ultimately looks for.
Shayna – Rosann may have served too rare of a steak but I don’t think it was actually raw. Shayna, on the other hand, is completely dead weight and isn’t a leader at all.

Matt and Shayna are nominated but Gordon brings Rosann up to be considered for elimination as well, saying “the only thing worse than Matt is serving raw meat to the birthday girl.” Matt scrambles, saying he wants to work with the women to prove the men will fail and that it’s that team as a whole and not him to blame for their failures. Gordon sends Shayna home nicely, saying, “Good night, my darling,” making her the only person I’ve ever seen on Hell’s Kitchen never to get yelled at by Gordon Ramsay. That’s an accomplishment. It’s no surprise but Gordon also decides to put Matt on the women’s team, which absolutely thrills the women. Oh, yes. They were oh so excited.

So what did you think? Should Shayna have been sent home? And who do you think will win the entire competition? Leave your TwoCents in the comments and make sure you let everyone know your pick for this season’s Hell’s Kitchen winner.
