Last night the two hour season finale of “Lost” aired & DAMN did it ever deliver. The writers’ strike had put a lot of doubt in some people as to whether or not this season could set out to finish what the writers/producers had been mapping out since last summer & even if it was different…it was still totally mind blowing.

The episode picked up right where season 3 left off…a scraggly, strung out Jack was begging Kate in the back of LAX to go back to the Island with him. Kate gets in the car & leaves (beginning of new episode…) & then suddenly backs up, gets out of the car & we learned that the mysterious dead guy in the coffin who was “neither friend or family” has a name & it is: Jeremy Bentham.

Note: I immediately figured it was Ben because of “BENtham.”

For the first time in a long time the Others are being made out to be the good guys…surprise, surprise, Ben was right. While Frank is handcuffed to the helicopter & Ben is being questioned Kate comes running out of the jungle saying she’s being chased by Ben’s people. They exchange really intensual glances & you realize they are conspiring together!

YIKES!!! ::::JUNGLE WHISPERING:::: General looks of “WTF?!!?!?” cross the Freighter people’s faces….

Until….an Other leaps out of the trees & there’s an ambush! Ben & Kate go running through the forest picking out the Freighter Dudes & bopping them on the heads a la little Bunny Foo-Foo. Sayid runs out & has a fight with Keamy Hezbollah style!
An Other leaps out of the trees & snaps the neck of a Freighter guy. AMBUSH!!!

Richard the Other Who Does Not Age joins them & Ben says that Kate & Sayid are free to take the helicopter & leave the island….

Cut to…a mental institution where Big Walt visits Hurley…literally…Walt is all grown up with a deep voice but the same clothes & hair…really funny…but still..who the hell is Jeremy Bentham & WHY did he go see Walt?

Along with that we learn something else back on the Island…Miles tells Charlotte very cryptically that he thinks it’s very weird that she is leaving the Island because she had tried SO hard to get BACK to it.
    1. Getting back to the Island IS possible.
    2. 2. What the HELL was Charlotte doing there & WHY doesn’t anyone know who she is?

Meanwhile, Ben & Locke are in the Orchid & Ben is being crazy & loading a portal thing with lots of metal objects. Ben is watching another Dharma Initiative video explaining how they made a bunny time travel…until Keamy steps out of the elevator, announces that he has a heart monitor strapped to him that will trigger the explosives on the freighter if his heart stops beating. So Ben stabs him a few times in the throat.

    Helicopter!
It’s losing fuel & Frank says it needs to be a few hundred pounds lighter if they’re going to make it to the freighter…Sawyer whispers something to Kate, making her promise something, kisses her, & then leaps out of the helicopter into the water!!!

Meanwhile…3 years later…Sayid kills a guy in a car, tells Hurley that Jeremy Bentham is dead because of suicide & that Hurley needs to go with him. Before he finishes his game of chess Hurley says, “Check mate, Mr. Eko.” (Mr. Eko was the African priest from the back of the plane in season 3.)

    FREIGHTER!
Keamy’s heart has stopped & the dude was not lying…the whole freighter explodes after Sun jumps onto the helicopter…leaving Jin & Michael. This scene with Sun’s reaction was totally heartwrenching & such good acting. I just love her.

    ISLAND:
The writers generously decided to give the viewer a break by letting us see Sawyer emerge from the water sans a shirt….a la season 1 & 2…Juliet is drinking rum on a beach. Take advantage, sweetheart, take advantage. Don’t be like freaking Keira Knightley in Pirates of the Caribbean who only PRETENDED to drink rum on a beach with a hot guy who swaggers…do it & own it.

    ORCHID:
Ben tells Lock to go join the Others & be their new leader. Meanwhile, Ben blows a hole in the back of the hatch & goes for a hike through the tunnel behind it & ends up in a snowy land with an oil lamp….Narnia? Where’s Mr. Tumnus? Aslan? No? He’s just moving a weird wheel thing that will apparently move the Island? Oh, ok, that makes more sense.

It makes the helicopter have to crash into the water because of lack of Island to land on but it’s all good…

They all get on the safety raft & there’s a boat…a la season 1…is it the Others? No, they’re not a threat anymore? More creepy freighter people? Charles Widmore? Um….close…while Jack is telling them that they all have to lie about everything Desmond is trying to make out the shadowy figure on the boat…Penny? Penny? PENNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remained choked up & teary for the next two hours after seeing them FINALLY together. Amazing. A. Ma. Zing.

    ONE WEEK LATER:
Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sun, Aaron, & Sayid set out on the raft & go to this island…

    Back to LA:
Right before Jack drives to the airport to harass Kate he goes to the funeral parlor, breaks in, opens the coffin & immediately we assume it’s Ben…until we see Ben standing behind Jack. He tells Jack that he has to go back to the Island. They ALL have to go back to the Island & that he would tell him how to get the rest of them to go back & had a few ideas about how to get there…so who the hell is in the coffin? As the camera pans over for one last mind blowing twist…we see that Jeremy Bentham…is John Locke.

So..among the THOUSANDS of other questions we have…WHY IS LOCKE OFF THE ISLAND!?!?!??!?!

It’s been a great season…I think this is the first tv series I’ve ever seen that does not disappoint but only gets better as the years go on.
