    The fleet has 5 weeks of fishing and bad omens under their belt, with many of them hoping for better pastures. But tensions are mounting and ready to blow.

    The Wizard –

    Captain Keith is still churning through his “Man Killer” string of pots. But since they’re averaging 90 crab per pot, it makes it easier to handle. Keith decides to power through his nap to finish the current string, and asks brother Monte to go work on deck, much to his chagrin. Monte cops an attitude about it, and after the string is done Keith lambastes him in the galley. Through the tension of the sibling rivalry, they are still able to fill up their tanks and prepare to head back to offload.

    The Time Bandit –

    After finishing it’s first offload of the season, The Time Bandit launches for it’s second run. However, it is short a man and has another wounded. Captain Jonathan notices from the wheelhouse that a raven is flying on to the deck and is stealing their eggs one by one. He’s not sure if it’s a good or bad omen. 28 hours later, they arrive to their first string of pots. Not far from their first pot the Time Bandit power goes out suddenly. They have 2 hazards to deal with now: being blind to other vessels at night and being a potential fire hazard. After much toiling and suffering through large waves, they get their power back.

    The Cornelia Marie –

    After a lackluster first run, the crew of the Cornelia Marie is getting ready for their next foray into the season. Captain Phil seems to be a little more stressed than normal after the last catch, which was underwhelming. On Friday, he gathers the crew for a meeting in the galley and recommends that they shouldn’t leave until the next day. He has never had anything good happen to him when leaving on a Friday. The crew doesn’t argue with him; superstitions abound in the fishing industry. However, this will set them a day back on what they hope will be a better 2nd run. And as fate has it, Captain Phil’s gamble pays off. They pull in a whopping 34 thousand pound first string. Things are looking up for Phil now.

    The Northwestern –

    The crew of the Northwestern is looking to fill their tanks for the first offload of the season. Greenhorn Jake has been showing his fervor for learning to be a great deckhand. This will also hopefully lead him to getting a full share. Deckhand Matt is not impressed. Deck boss Edgar notices the tension and decides to stop working with Jake on the rail. Jake cops an attitude, which forces Edgar to post a sign above the door that reads “Check your feelings at the door”. As night falls, you can see the anger welling up in Matt seeing the attention that Jake is getting from Edgar. After a quick exchange tying a pot, Matt and Jake start a fight on deck! Edgar talks to both of them to calm them down and get them focused on the job. Later Sig threatens Matt & Jake that if either of them takes a swing again they’re off the boat and off the team.

    The Early Dawn –

    The Early Dawn is running through a bad string. Captain Rick has decided to put the crew on a 20 hour on, 4 hour off shift. The experienced deckhands are making sport of Greenhorn Brian. They do it because they believe Brian works harder when they do. Brian pulls his lower back and excuses himself form the deck. After a 20 hour day of work, he Early Dawn is going through a storm system producing 25’ waves. Rick goes to sleep and puts Brian in the wheelhouse on watch. Brian is doing this after working on deck all day and the fatigue is showing. The wheelhouse has an alarm that goes off every 15 minutes to keep tired captains awake. But Brian falls asleep at the wheel 10 minutes into his shift. This is just enough time for a rogue wave to hit the vessel and knock the crew around. Captain Rick and the crew are quite upset at Brian as a result and this could mean termination. However, Brian’s father owns a fleet of ships, including the Early Dawn. This connection gets him a stay of execution and Captain Rick isn’t happy about his policy being overturned.

    This was a great episode. The show sometimes makes you feel like a voyeur in the lives of the fleet. And it wasn’t more evident than this episode with all of the scuffles. The fisticuffs on the Northwestern were something to behold. But best of all for me was seeing the Cornelia Marie give the episode a happy ending, pulling in the crab counts that’s it’s used to.
