There comes a time in every sitcom's life when it is forced to recycle jokes. The first season should not be that time.

Don't get me wrong, I have an unwavering devotion to The Big Bang Theory, and laugh at every episode, but there was quite a bit of old material here. But first the recap:

There comes a time in every sitcom's life when it is forced to recycle jokes. The first season should not be that time.

Don't get me wrong, I have an unwavering devotion to The Big Bang Theory, and laugh at every episode, but there was quite a bit of old material here. But first the recap:

Leonard finds a miniature replica of a time machine from the 60s movie "The Time Machine" (duh) on an auction site, and bids $800, thinking he will soon be outbid. Lo and behold, he wins the auction, and the guys decide to split the cost and share it. When the time machine gets delivered, it turns out to not be so miniature, and the four struggle to move it upstairs. Penny comes rushing out, needing to get to work, but can't get by the time machine and ends up taking Sheldon's suggestion of jumping to the adjacent roof to use their stairwell. This doesn't go so well, and in her frustration, Penny lashes out and calls the boys "pathetic" for being grown men obsessed with toys and comics. Leonard takes this to heart and goes out to sell all of his memorabilia, while his horrified friends try to stop this sacrilege. Penny comes by before he goes through with it and apologizes for what she said. Leonard tries to ask her out, only to be interrupted by the arrival of Penny's date. Back to toys it is! In the middle of all this, of course, there is lots of general geekery over the time machine, and a funny scene where the guys fast-forward themselves.

This was, in my opinion, the least enjoyable episode of a show that's usually at the top of its game. It was uneventful, and as I've mentioned, there is plenty of recycled material.

Item 1: Trying to get something up the stairs because the elevator is still broken. In the first episode, it was Penny's package. In this episode, it's the time machine.
Item 2: If you're broke, you can sell semen. Leonard and Sheldon tried to do this in the first episode, but this episode's line did not strike me as an allusion to their earlier escapade, just a repeated joke.
Item 3: Leonard starts to get close to Penny, but then, what's this? Oh, it's her hunky date. We've seen this before, only she was being dropped off and goodnight-kissed the last time.

In any event, next week's episode with Sheldon's sister looks wonderfully promising! So what do you think, viewers and readers? Am I being too harsh on this episode? Give your Two Cents in the comments.

  2. Having just started watching this show, I missed the earlier episodes so the jokes were fresh to me. I actually really enjoyed this episode, especially the fast-forwarding part.

And I'm sad to say, I agree with Sheldon on the sandwich construction issue. I like my cheese next to the bread for maximum moisture retention.

I hate that I relate to Sheldon.

  3. Oh, the sandwich construction issue was priceless! I think it's funny to notice that some of Sheldon's little habits are just things that some people have a degree of OCD about, but just never discuss. Just be careful when you start awakening at 6:15 every morning, and sitting on the specific end of a specific couch to watch Doctor Who :)
