When I first heard the title of this episode "Meet Kevin Johnson" I got really excited because I thought they were introducing a new character! So many things have happened & have gone totally unanswered in the past three seasons of "Lost" that I totally forgot in LAST week's episode we were re-introduced to Michael Dawson AS....Kevin Johnson. This episode was set in three places...the Island (Locke's camp), the freighter, & in the past in New York City...from whence Michael came.

It started with Locke hosting a meeting with everyone at camp. He drags in Miles & in just a few minutes Ben blurts out some very important information.

    1. The "rescue people" are there to get Ben.
    2. Once they have him they have been ordered to kill everyone else on the Island.
    3. Michael is his spy on the freighter.
Miles confirms the first two bits of info.

Uhhhh...cut to the freighter of impending doom...

Apparently this freighter definitely carries impending doom because it seems like EVERYONE wants off of it. Last week a woman wrapped herself in chains & jumped off the boat & this week two men are beaten up because they try to escape by raft.

    Island:
-Ben gives Alex a map to where the rest of the Others are staying. He says it's a "temple/sanctuary." How very weird & cultish sounding Ben..but that's why we love you. :) He does this after seeing Karl's hand on Alex's back & tells her that Karl & Rousseau are going with her.

Back to the Freighter....Michael decides to tell Sayid & Desmond how he got to be on the freighter & why he's still working for Ben.

    New York City:
Things We Learn About What Happened To Michael:
    1. He tries to kill himself & survives.
    2. Walt is living with his grandmother & wants nothing to do with Michael.
    3. He goes to an alley to shoot himself when...GASP...out of the shadows comes Tom the Other!!! Tom tells Michael he has things to tell him when he's ready...of course like any normal survivor of Oceanic 815 Michael get the heellll outta there.
    4. He goes back to his apartment & in a truly disturbing scene that really shocked me (I couldn't believe they let this be on television) he tries to shoot himself in the head several times but the gun keeps jamming. Sigh. He goes to Tom's apartment.

Things We Learn From Tom the Other:
    1. Tom is gay.
    2. The Island will not let Michael die until his purpose is fulfilled. What is his purpose you ask?
    3. He needs to go to the freighter & kill everyone on it.
    4. Oh...and Charles Widmore staged the wreck. How did he get the bodies? A mass grave in Thailand. Crazy bastard.
    5. So Michael decides to go to the freighter to act as a spy for Ben...

Things We Learn About Michael's First Few Days On the Freighter:
    1. Miles knows Michael's name isn't Kevin.
    2. Michael goes to detonate a bomb when a flag pops up saying,"NOT YET."
    3. Ben contacts Michael via radio.

Back to present day on the freighter....
    1. Sayid gets so pissed that Michael is working for Ben that he outs him.
    2. Desmond just stands by helpless & Desmond-like.

    Back to the Island...
    1. At this point the audience is wondering if maybe the "Lost" people at ABC got the promos wrong because there's barely 6 minutes left in the show & no one's died yet...even though it was definitely broadcasted that someone WOULD die in this episode.
    2. Then....GASP...as Rousseau, Karl, & Alex are walking through the jungle Karl get shot. DEAD. Alex freaks out. Rousseau tells her that she loves her very much & that they must run. They go to run & then....
    3. BANG. Rousseau is shot & falls face down in the mud. Alex freaks out again & starts screaming,"I'M BEN'S DAUGHTER!!!"...and it's over.

Some random musings about the episode...
    1. Ok, is Ben good or bad? Is what Tom told Michael the absolute truth? I want to say that Ben is secretly still evil..but still somehow he's the villain that we want to root for...why? Because Sayid works for him in the future. What is THAT? I want to know what happens between Ben & Sayid to make Sayid work for him after he freaked out on Michael for doing the same thing.
    2. Is Rousseau really dead? I feel like they would have given her a more epic end & we didn't physically SEE her die..soo..yeah. I mean I don't really mind that she's dead. She's been a fabulous character & brilliantly cast for the past three seasons but at this point I want more focus to be elsewhere. So good...get rid of Karl, Rousseau, & Alex for the time being.
    3. "Lost" has a beautiful musical score but unlike "Alias" it uses very few SONGS in the show. So far we've heard Damien Rice (Delicate), the Glenn Miller orchestra, Mama Cass, Patsy Cline, aaannnddd I think that's it. So Mama Cass' "Make Your Own Kind of Music" was the repeated song from the hatch that was used in the season 2 premiere & several more episodes after that. Last night the BRILLIANTLY placed "It's Getting Better" (also by Mama Cass) was used as Michael's theme throughout the episode.
    4. Also...I thought the Island had no radio connection to the outside? How was Ben able to contact Michael on the freighter?
    5. I honestly thought that Sawyer was going to die in this episode. He's been my favorite character on the show but unfortunately his story & aim were both resolved in season 3 & now he's just hanging out being all...nice & polite...it's weird. My friend Emory & I are both convinced he'll definitely die but it'll be epically heroic...and kind of annoying & self-righteous. Can't he just drink too much, lose his balance & fall off a cliff? That would be so much more Sawyer-like. ;)
    6. Sooooo. You know how the names of the character on "Lost" are insanely significant & also allusions to literature are used consistently throughout? "John Locke" was a philosopher...as was "Rousseau." Jack "Shepherd" obviously plays the shepherding role. "Sawyer"...Tom Sawyer...OK prepare yourself for one more. Charlotte Lewis. The new redhead from the freighter? Her initials are "C.S. Lewis." So that got me thinking to "The Chronicles of Narnia"....AHA!....have y'all ever read "Voyage of the Dawn Treader?" The basic jist is that there's an Island where all of your dreams actually come true but when the people get there they realize that their nightmares come true as well. Well-played Mr. Abrams & Staff of People Who Work On "Lost". Well-played.

  2. My Two Cents:

    1. If The Island will not let Michael die until he fulfills purpose, how can he blow up the freighter? Is that his purpose? If so, why does Libby appear and tell him not to do it? I think Libby would represent The Island better that good old always-beaten-up Ben.

    2. And there was a nice reference to "The Shining" when Michael keeps bouncing the tennis ball and the radio guy calls him on it... It is an especially nice reference since we all know his son, Walt, actually HAS The Shining.
